Common Price Myths

“You cannot do Santorini on a budget.” You can, comfortably, by sleeping inland and travelling in the shoulder season.

“Everything on the island is overpriced.” The supermarkets, bakeries, buses, museums, sites and inland tavernas are all ordinary Greek prices.

“You have to stay on the caldera.” The view is free from the public rim path, which runs the length of Fira, Firostefani and Imerovigli.

“Restaurants are all tourist traps.” The rim ones are priced for the terrace. Ten minutes inland the cooking is better and a third of the price.

“The sunset costs money.” It does not, anywhere.

“A cave hotel is a rip-off.” It is the traditional dwelling and it stays at 18 degrees all summer.

“Prices are fixed by the season.” They move week by week, and the first fortnight of August is a different market from the last week of it.

Anyone repeating that the island is simply expensive, without asking when and where, has answered is santorini expensive without looking at the question.

What Has Changed

Worth knowing, because a lot of price advice online is several years out of date.

Cruise arrivals are being capped. The local authority has moved to limit daily numbers, which will change the shape of the day rather than the prices.

Card payment is now near-universal. The cash-only taverna is largely gone.

Short-term rentals have pushed up staff housing costs. Which feeds through into wages and therefore into menus.

The shoulder season has lengthened. April and October are far busier and dearer than they were a decade ago.

Direct flights have multiplied. Which has brought fares down in the shoulder months and not in August.

The top end has grown fastest. Suites that were 400 euros a night are now 900, while the inland rooms have risen roughly with inflation, so is santorini expensive depends more than ever on where you sleep.

The consequence is that the gap between the two islands described at the top of this page has widened, not narrowed. The cheap version of Santorini is still cheap; the expensive version has become considerably more so.

Getting Here: What It Costs From Where You Are

From the United Kingdom. Direct seasonal flights from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Edinburgh, three and a half to four hours. August fares are the peak of the year; May and October are frequently half. Out of season, fly to Athens and take the fifty-minute hop, which is often cheaper than a single direct ticket in June.

From Germany, France and Italy. The best-served markets after the UK, with a large charter operation and two to three hour flights. Italy is the shortest and cheapest run of all.

From the United States and Canada. No direct flights and there never have been. Transatlantic to Athens, then the hop. Booking the two legs separately is usually cheaper and entirely at your own risk, so leave four hours rather than ninety minutes.

From Australia and Asia. Two stops, twenty-four to thirty hours, and a night in Athens on the way in that should be budgeted rather than resented.

From elsewhere in Greece. Two to three hours by fast ferry from Mykonos, Naxos or Paros at 60 to 90 euros, and about two hours from Crete in season.

The Athens night. Two hundred euros for a hotel and a dinner in Plaka, and it turns a punishing arrival into a good one. Whether that counts against is santorini expensive is a matter of temperament.

Two Nights, Four Nights or a Week

Trip length changes the arithmetic in a way people rarely think about.

Two nights. The worst value of the three. Arrival and departure days are largely lost to transfers, so you pay two nights and get one usable day. Only sensible as part of an island-hopping route.

Four nights. The efficient minimum. Three full days, which covers Akrotiri, a winery afternoon, a boat and Oia at dawn. The fixed costs of getting here are spread over enough days to justify them.

A week. The marginal cost per day falls steadily. By day six you are eating like a resident, you know which taverna is cheapest and you have stopped booking things.

Ten days. Add another island by ferry rather than stretching this one.

Paying for Time Rather Than Things

The most useful reframing we can offer, after years of watching people spend money here.

Almost nothing on this island is worth paying for as an object. The room is a bed; the view outside it is free from the path. The rim restaurant is a terrace; the food is better inland. The plunge pool is two metres of cold water. The sunset is free everywhere.

What is genuinely worth money here is time, and specifically the removal of friction: not queueing for the cable car, not circling Fira for a parking space, not standing at an airport taxi rank with tired children, not spending an hour of a five-day trip working out which bus goes where. A private transfer at 45 euros and a guided day at 340 for the vehicle are not luxuries in that framing; they are the purchase of usable hours on a trip that only has a few of them.

Set against that, the 500-euro room is the one line where is santorini expensive is genuinely true and genuinely avoidable, because the thing it is selling you is visible for nothing from fifty metres away.

The Cheapest Good Week We Could Design

Two people, seven nights, late September or the first half of May, excluding flights.

Sleep. A simple hotel or apartment at Karterados or Kamari with a pool, around 600 euros for the week.

Eat. Bakery breakfasts, taverna lunches, inland dinners, two supermarket picnics on the rim at sunset. About 450.

Move. A hire car for three days at 90, fuel at 30, buses on the other days at 20. About 140.

See. Akrotiri, Ancient Thira and both Fira museums, about 60 for two. A wine tasting at 50. About 110.

The one splurge. A shared catamaran with lunch, about 260 for two.

The other one splurge. A single caldera-rim dinner, booked, about 170.

Total. Around 1,730 euros for two, for seven nights, with a boat day and a rim dinner in it.

That is a genuinely good week, and it is what the island costs when you stop paying for the cliff twice. Anyone who reads that figure and still asks is santorini expensive is really asking whether the cave suite is worth it, which is a different question and a personal one.

Two Islands, One Name

Everything on this page comes back to a single observation, so it is worth stating plainly at the end.

There is a Santorini that appears in magazines: a cave suite on a cliff, a plunge pool over a volcano, a table at the edge of a terrace at eight in the evening, a chartered catamaran. It is real, it is very good, and it costs what a European luxury destination costs. Nobody who books it should be surprised by the bill.

And there is the other one: a village on the flat with a pool and a bus stop, a taverna in Emporio where dinner for two is 45 euros, a hire car on empty roads in May, a Bronze Age town under a roof, fifteen wineries with terraces, and the most famous view in Greece available for nothing from a public path that runs for three kilometres. That island costs what Naxos costs.

Both are here at the same time, on 76 square kilometres, and visitors move between them daily without noticing. That is why is santorini expensive has no single answer, and why every honest attempt at one is really a list of decisions rather than a number.

Make three of them well, which are the month, the village and where you eat, and this is an affordable island with an extraordinary view. Make them badly and it is one of the most expensive weeks in Europe.

Money Practicalities

Currency. Euro.

Cards. Accepted almost everywhere, including most tavernas and all hotels. Greek businesses are legally required to accept card payment in most sectors.

Cash. Useful for small village tavernas, beach canteens, the bus and the cable car.

ATMs. In Fira, Oia, Kamari, Perissa and Emporio. Fees vary by machine and the bank-branded ones are cheaper than the standalone tourist machines.

Prices displayed. Menus and rate cards must show prices including tax. What you see is what you pay, so is santorini expensive is at least never a surprise on the menu.

Receipts. Always issued and legally required.

Tourist tax. A small nightly accommodation levy is charged separately at check-in or check-out, by room category.

Mistakes That Cost Money

Is Santorini Expensive: Frequently Asked Questions

Is Santorini expensive? On the caldera rim in August, yes, very. Away from the view and outside July and August it costs about what any other Greek island costs. The premium is almost entirely for the cliff.

How much does a week cost? For two people excluding flights, roughly 900 to 1,300 euros on a budget in May, 1,800 to 2,600 mid-range, and 6,000 upwards for a caldera room in August.

How much is a hotel? A caldera-view double runs from about 350 euros a night in August and 100 to 200 in May or October. Off the rim, 50 to 180 depending on the season.

How much is dinner? 60 to 120 euros a head with wine on the caldera rim, 20 to 30 at a village taverna inland, and 15 to 25 at a beach taverna.

Is food expensive? Only where the view is. Inland tavernas are ordinary Greek prices and usually better.

What is the cheapest month? January, and among the months everything is open, May and October.

Is it more expensive than Mykonos? Mykonos is dearer at the top end; Santorini is dearer for an average room with a view. Both are the two most expensive islands in the Cyclades.

Can you visit on a budget? Yes. Stay at Karterados or Perissa, eat inland, use buses and one hire-car day, and come in May or October.

Do you need a lot of cash? No. Cards work almost everywhere; carry some cash for village tavernas, buses and the cable car.

Are the beaches free? Yes. Sunbeds cost 15 to 40 euros a pair and are often free if you eat at the bar.

Is the sunset free? Entirely, from every viewpoint including Oia castle.

What is the single biggest saving? Changing the month. Everything else on this page is secondary to that.
