Oia. The village everyone comes for: white houses stacked down the cliff, blue domes, the ruined castle at the western tip. Against the public bus. Santorini’s public buses run from Fira to the main villages and cost a few euro. They are genuinely usable and genuinely slow, they do not go to viewpoints, and nobody explains anything. If your budget is the binding constraint, take the bus. Against renting a car or ATV. Freedom, and the parking problem. Oia and Fira parking in August is its own kind of holiday, and the island’s drivers are not gentle with visitors. The tour removes both problems and the guide replaces the guidebook.

Against a catamaran cruise. A different product entirely — the volcano, the hot springs and the sea rather than the villages. Many visitors do both, and if you only have time for one and you have never seen the caldera villages, do the land tour first.

If your hotel is on a pedestrian caldera path, which most in Oia and Imerovigli are, we agree the nearest point a vehicle can reach when you book rather than discovering it on the morning.

Timing. The Santorini small group tour runs five hours, usually starting early afternoon so that the later stops fall as the light improves and the day-trip crowds thin. Exact pickup times are confirmed the day before.

Group size. Sixteen maximum, and we do not exceed it. If a booking would take the group over sixteen we open a second vehicle rather than squeeze.

Language. English as standard, Greek on any date. French, German, Italian, Spanish or Russian can sometimes be arranged with notice, though on a shared tour it depends on who else is booked — for a guaranteed language, take a private tour.

When to Take the Santorini Small Group Tour

April to early June. The best window on the island and the best window for this tour. Wildflowers are still out on the slopes, the light is clean, the archaeological sites are quiet and five hours outdoors is comfortable rather than punishing. The Santorini small group tour runs daily from the start of April.

July and August. Hot, bright and busy. The tour still works, and the minibus air conditioning matters more than you expect, but Oia in August is genuinely crowded and the black sand at Perivolos is too hot to walk on barefoot in the afternoon. Book further ahead — this is when the sixteen seats fill first.

Late September and October. The other good window. The sea is still warm, the crowds have thinned, the grape harvest is finished and the light in the late afternoon is the best of the year for photographs. Many regulars think this is the right time for a Santorini small group tour.

Winter. We run the tour on request from November to March. Many businesses in Oia close, the wind can be serious and some days are wet — but the villages are yours, the views are unobstructed and the price is the same. For a returning visitor it is a genuinely different island.

What to Bring on the Santorini Small Group Tour

Shoes with grip. The single most useful thing. Oia, Firostefani and Megalochori are cobbles, marble and uneven steps, and marble polished by a century of feet is slippery in any weather. Sandals are a mistake.

Sun protection. There is very little natural shade anywhere on the route. Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen from April onwards, not just in summer — the Aegean light is stronger than it feels.

Water. We provide bottled water on board, and you will want more than you think between May and September.

A light layer. Even in August the wind on the caldera rim in the late afternoon has an edge to it, and the minibus air conditioning is efficient.

Cash. Small denominations for coffee, a snack, or a tasting. Card is widely accepted but not everywhere in the smaller villages.

Swimwear, optionally. The Santorini small group tour ends at the black sand beach and there is time to get in the water if you want it. Bring a towel if you plan to.

What not to bring: a large bag. Space on the minibus is shared and sixteen large bags do not fit. A day pack is right.

The History Behind the Stops on the Santorini Small Group Tour

The four villages on this route are not interchangeable white houses, and a Santorini small group tour is far better when you know what you are standing in.

Oia was a shipping village before it was a photograph. In the nineteenth century its captains ran a merchant fleet trading between the Black Sea and Alexandria, and the large neoclassical houses on the upper lane were built with that money — the cave houses cut into the cliff below belonged to the crews. The 1956 earthquake destroyed much of it and emptied the village for decades. What visitors photograph today is a careful restoration, which is why it looks so uniform.

Firostefani means “the crown of Fira”, and it sits on the rim directly above it. It stayed residential while Fira became commercial, which is why it is quieter, and why the caldera view from its edge is the one photographers actually use.

Megalochori grew rich on Vinsanto, the sun-dried sweet wine the island exported to Russia by the barrel in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The vaulted mansions behind the high walls were built by those merchants, and the bell towers standing free in the square are a Cycladic form you will not see on the mainland.

Perivolos is geology rather than history — black sand ground down from the volcanic rock the eruption laid across the south of the island. Standing on it, you are standing on the eruption that made the caldera your Santorini small group tour spent the afternoon looking into.

Most people book this tour partly for the photographs, so a few honest notes.

The blue domes in Oia that appear in every image are three specific churches on the northern lane, and they are photographed from a narrow walkway that holds about eight people comfortably. What to Expect Physically on the Santorini Small Group Tour

This is a walking tour with a minibus between stops, not a bus tour with photo stops. Over five hours you should expect to be on your feet for around two and a half of them, on surfaces that are frequently uneven.

Oia involves a level main lane but steps at either end and at every viewpoint. Firostefani is short and mostly flat along the rim. Megalochori is cobbled, narrow and slightly stepped. Perivolos is flat, and walking on deep black sand is more work than it looks.

There is very little shade at any stop. Between May and September the Santorini small group tour is genuinely hot work in the middle of the afternoon, which is one reason the route is timed the way it is.
