In Greece, only a state-licensed guide – a qualification requiring a degree and formal examination – may interpret inside a protected archaeological site. A driver-guide can take you to Akrotiri and talk about it in the car park. They cannot legally walk you through it explaining what you are looking at.

Most “historical” tours sold on this island use a driver-guide and describe it as archaeological guiding. Akrotiri: The Bronze Age Town

Akrotiri is why the Santorini historical tour exists, and most visitors arrive knowing almost nothing about it.

Around 1600 BC – the exact date is still argued – the volcano beneath this island erupted in one of the largest events in recorded human history. It buried a thriving Aegean port under metres of pumice and ash, collapsed the island’s centre into the sea, and sent tsunamis against the north coast of Crete.

The ash preserved rather than destroyed. What has been excavated is a town with paved streets, a drainage system running beneath them, and houses of two and three storeys with windows, internal staircases and plumbing – a level of urban planning not matched in Europe for centuries afterwards. Storage jars stand where they were left. Furniture has survived as voids in the ash, cast in plaster.

The frescoes are what changed archaeology. The Spring Fresco with its swallows and lilies, the Fishermen, the Boxing Boys, the miniature Flotilla frieze showing ships and a coastal town – these are wall paintings of a sophistication nobody expected from the Bronze Age Aegean, and they are alive in a way contemporary Egyptian art is not. The originals are in the Museum of Prehistoric Thera; on the Santorini historical tour you see the rooms they came from and then the paintings themselves.

There are no bodies. The population appears to have been warned by earthquakes and left, taking their valuables. Where they went is unknown. That absence gives the site a strange, orderly emptiness quite unlike Pompeii.

Ancient Thera: The City on the Ridge

What survives is a whole city in outline: the agora, the theatre with the sea below it, the sanctuary of Apollo Karneios, gymnasium, houses, cisterns cut into the rock, and inscriptions carved into the terrace by soldiers. It is more fragmentary than Akrotiri and the setting is spectacular – sea on three sides and the whole island laid out beneath you.

An archaeologist makes the difference here more than anywhere. Without one it is an attractive ruin; with one it is a city, and your guide on the Santorini historical tour will show you the drainage, the political inscriptions and the Ptolemaic garrison’s quarters that you would otherwise walk past.

Practical note: the site closes earlier than you expect outside high summer, and the road up is not for the nervous. Both are handled by the timing of the tour.

The Museum of Prehistoric Thera holds the Akrotiri finds and is, for its size, one of the best museums in Greece. The frescoes are here, along with the pottery, the gold ibex figurine found in a wooden box in 1999, and the furniture casts. Forty minutes, a few euro, and it is what turns Akrotiri from a field of stones into a town. Most independent visitors skip it and should not.

The Archaeological Museum covers the later island – the Dorian, Hellenistic and Roman periods that Ancient Thera belongs to. Sculpture, inscriptions, grave goods and the black-figure and red-figure pottery.

The Eruption, and What It Did

Everything on the Santorini historical tour follows from a single event, and it is worth setting out properly.

The Minoan eruption, dated to somewhere around 1600 BC, expelled an estimated 60 cubic kilometres of material. The magma chamber emptied, the centre of the island collapsed, and the sea flooded in to create the caldera you look into from every viewpoint on the island. Ash fell across the eastern Mediterranean and has been identified in ice cores in Greenland and in tree rings as far away as Ireland.

Akrotiri was buried. Tsunamis struck the north coast of Crete, damaging Minoan coastal settlements. Minoan civilisation did not end that day – the archaeology shows it continued for a century or more – but it entered a decline from which it did not recover, and Mycenaean Greece took its place as the dominant Aegean power.

The Atlantis question comes up on every Santorini historical tour, and the honest answer is this: Plato describes an advanced island civilisation destroyed in a single day and night, writing roughly 1,200 years after the eruption. The parallel is striking. There is no evidence that he had Santorini in mind, and no serious archaeologist claims the identification is proven. What is certain is that you are standing on the rim of the crater, that the pale bands in the cliffs are the ash from that eruption, and that the town beneath it survived because of it.

Santorini’s Timeline in Brief

A Santorini historical tour covers a long story, and having the shape of it in your head before you arrive makes the day far better.

c. 3000–1600 BC. Cycladic and then Minoan-influenced settlement. Akrotiri grows into a substantial port trading with Crete, mainland Greece, Egypt and the Levant.

c. 1600 BC. The eruption. The town is buried, the caldera forms, and the island is uninhabited for perhaps two centuries.

9th century BC. Dorian settlers arrive and found Ancient Thera on the ridge at Mesa Vouno. The island takes the name Thera.

Hellenistic period. Ptolemaic Egypt garrisons the island as a naval base. Ancient Thera reaches its greatest extent – the gymnasium and much of what you walk through on the Santorini historical tour dates from here.

Roman and Byzantine. Continued occupation, then gradual decline. The Panagia Episkopi at Mesa Gonia is built in 1115 and survives today.

1204–1579. Venetian rule after the Fourth Crusade. The island is renamed Santorini after Saint Irene, and the five fortified kastelli are built – at Pyrgos, Emporio, Skaros, Oia and Akrotiri – against pirates.

1579–1821. Ottoman rule, with unusual autonomy. The Vinsanto trade to Russia builds the merchant fortunes of Megalochori and Pyrgos.

19th century. Oia’s shipping boom. A merchant fleet trades to the Black Sea and Alexandria and builds the neoclassical houses on the upper lane.

1956. The Amorgos earthquake, magnitude 7.7, destroys much of Oia, Fira and Imerovigli and empties the island. Emigration follows.

1967 onward. Spyridon Marinatos begins excavating Akrotiri. Tourism arrives in the 1970s and transforms everything.

The Later History You Can Still See

A Santorini historical tour is usually built around the two ancient sites, but the island’s medieval and modern layers are visible everywhere and can be added if that is what interests you.

The kastelli

Five fortified settlements were built under Venetian rule, designed so that the outer ring of houses formed the defensive wall. Emporio has the best-preserved – a genuine maze of interlocking lanes that still confuses visitors, which was the point. Pyrgos retains its castle and the village wrapped around it. Skaros, below Imerovigli, carried the island’s medieval capital until earthquakes brought most of it into the sea.

Panagia Episkopi

Built in 1115 at Mesa Gonia and the oldest church on the island, with Byzantine frescoes and a marble iconostasis. It survived the 1956 earthquake that flattened the village around it.

Profitis Ilias Monastery

Founded 1711 on the island’s highest ridge, with a museum of icons, manuscripts and a preserved workshop. It ran a secret school during Ottoman rule.

The most recent rupture in the island’s history and the one that explains what you see. It destroyed most of Oia, emptied the caldera villages for a generation and drove thousands to Athens, Piraeus and abroad. The uniformity of restored Oia, the abandoned cave houses at Vothonas and Mesa Gonia, and the island’s demographic shape all follow from it.
