Nobody will look twice at two men or two women sharing a caldera suite, holding hands on the path to Oia or booking a honeymoon. What you will not find is Mykonos. Yes, Santorini is gay friendly. Greece legalised same-sex marriage in February 2024, having recognised civil partnerships since 2015. The island’s economy is built on couples, its hotels are used to honeymooners of every kind, and attitudes in the tourist industry are relaxed and professional.

The Legal Position Behind a Gay Friendly Santorini

Worth stating plainly, because it changed recently and a lot of older travel writing has not caught up.

Same-sex marriage. Legalised in Greece in February 2024. Greece became the first majority Orthodox country to do so, and the law also granted adoption rights to same-sex couples.

Civil partnerships. Available since 2015, and still an option.

Discrimination. Prohibited in employment, goods and services under Greek and EU law.

Recognition of foreign marriages. A marriage performed abroad is recognised.

What a gay friendly Santorini means practically. Booking a double room as a couple, checking in together, or arranging a ceremony are all straightforward. A gay friendly Santorini is not a marketing claim on this island, it is the legal and commercial baseline.

The caveat worth knowing. Greece is socially more conservative outside the tourist centres than within them, and the Orthodox Church opposed the marriage law. On Santorini, where the economy runs on visitors, that gap barely shows. In a working village at eleven at night you are in someone’s neighbourhood rather than a resort, and ordinary discretion is the same courtesy you would extend anywhere.

What to Actually Expect on a Gay Friendly Santorini Holiday

Hotels. Gay friendly Santorini starts here, and there is no issue anywhere on the caldera or the beaches. Staff are used to couples of every configuration and the better hotels are practised at honeymoons. A double bed booked as a double bed arrives as a double bed.

Restaurants and bars. Relaxed everywhere. Nobody is watching.

Public affection. Holding hands, an arm around a shoulder, a photograph together at the castle – entirely unremarkable in Oia, Fira, Imerovigli, Kamari and Perissa. In the inland farming villages people are friendly and rather more reserved, which is about the villages being lived in rather than about who you are.

Staff and guides. Professional. Our drivers do not comment on who is in the vehicle, and nobody on our team needs telling that a gay friendly Santorini is simply how the island does business.

Other visitors. Two million a year from everywhere. You will not be the only gay couple on the caldera path at sunset, or close to it.

Safety on a gay friendly Santorini. It is a very safe island generally, with low crime and a heavy seasonal police presence. We are not aware of the island having a reputation for problems, and we would tell you if it did.

The honest summary. Expect indifference in the best sense – a welcome that does not make a point of itself.

Gay Friendly Santorini or Mykonos?

The question every gay traveller to Greece asks, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a sales pitch.

Mykonos is one of the major gay destinations in the world. It has a dedicated scene: Super Paradise beach, a cluster of bars in the old town, XLSIOR in August, and a critical mass of gay visitors from May to September. If you want nightlife, cruising, parties and to be among a crowd, go to Mykonos. Nothing on Santorini competes and nothing on Santorini tries to.

Santorini is gay friendly without being a gay destination. It has the caldera, the sunsets, the archaeology, the wine and the honeymoon hotels. It has no gay bars, no gay beach and no scene. What it has instead is quiet, scenery and a hospitality industry that treats a gay couple exactly like any other couple.

Who should choose a gay friendly Santorini. Honeymooners. Couples marking an anniversary. Anyone who wants a beautiful, calm week. Anyone travelling with family. Anyone who has done Mykonos and wants the opposite.

Who should choose Mykonos. Anyone whose holiday is the nightlife.

Why not both. They are two hours apart by fast ferry and a great many people do exactly this: a few loud nights on Mykonos, then a quiet gay friendly Santorini week to recover. The ferry runs from Athinios port, and we meet the boat.

Where to Stay on a Gay Friendly Santorini Trip

Every village on this island is part of a gay friendly Santorini. The choice is about the holiday you want, not about which places will welcome you, and it is the same advice we would give anyone.

Imerovigli – the gay friendly Santorini honeymoon classic, with the best caldera view on the island and the quietest of the rim villages. The classic honeymoon choice, and the one we recommend most often to couples. More on Imerovigli.

Oia – the famous one, and the most romantic on paper. Also the busiest, the most expensive and the most stepped. Beautiful, and not restful in August. More on Oia.

Finikia – a kilometre from Oia, a fraction of the price, and a ten-minute walk to the castle. The best value at the northern end. More on Finikia.

Beaches on a Gay Friendly Santorini

Santorini has no officially designated gay beach. What it has is several quiet stretches where nobody pays attention to anybody, which in practice serves the same purpose.

Vlychada. The eastern end of the bay, under the carved white ash cliffs, is used informally by naturists and is the closest the island has to a relaxed, unwatched stretch of sand. Black sand, clear water, dramatic scenery and very few people. More on Vlychada.

Kokkini Ammos, the Red Beach. Some people swim without at the far end. Spectacular, unserviced, and subject to genuine rockfall – stay away from the cliff. More on the Red Beach.

Agios Georgios. The southern end of the seven-kilometre Perissa strip, where the loungers and music stop entirely. Empty sand, no facilities at all. More on Agios Georgios.

Baxedes. The north coast below Oia, with real shade under tamarisk trees and almost nobody on it. More on Baxedes.

Perivolos. The opposite end of the spectrum – beach clubs, day beds, music and a mixed, relaxed crowd. The most sociable beach on the island. More on Perivolos.

A note on naturism in gay friendly Santorini. It is informal and tolerated at the quiet ends of certain beaches rather than designated anywhere. Walk on if it is not what you are looking for, and use ordinary judgement about where you are.

Gay Friendly Santorini Nightlife, Honestly

Gay friendly Santorini has no gay scene. No gay bars, no gay club, no gay beach bar. This is the one respect in which a gay friendly Santorini falls short of what some visitors expect, and it is better said here than discovered on the second evening.

What there is instead. Fira has the island’s nightlife: bars along the caldera rim and a cluster of late clubs, all mixed and all relaxed. Perivolos has the beach clubs, which run from late afternoon into the night in season. Oia is restaurants and wine bars rather than dancing, and closes early.

Sunset drinks. The real evening on this island. A caldera terrace with a bottle of Assyrtiko, and it is the thing couples remember.

What to do instead of a scene. A wine tour in the afternoon, dinner inland at nine at village prices, and the sunset from somewhere without four thousand people in it – the lighthouse at Faros, or the castle at Pyrgos.

If nightlife matters. Do three nights here and three on Mykonos. That is the itinerary we build most often for couples who want both.

Gay Friendly Santorini Weddings, Honeymoons and Proposals

Since February 2024 same-sex couples can marry in Greece, which makes a gay friendly Santorini wedding straightforward, and Santorini is one of the most popular wedding destinations in Europe. The two facts together make this a straightforward island to plan a ceremony on.

Weddings. Civil ceremonies are performed by the municipality, and the paperwork requirements are the same as for any foreign couple marrying in Greece. Wedding planners on the island handle this constantly and several specialise in it.

Venues. Caldera terraces in Imerovigli and Oia for the view; restored mansions and courtyards in Megalochori and Pyrgos for something quieter and considerably cheaper.

Photography. The reason people marry here. Early morning in the lanes of Oia or Finikia, the lighthouse cape at sunset, or the white walls of Megalochori with nobody in the frame.

Practical Advice for Gay Travellers in Santorini

Book the room as you want it. A double is a double. There is no need to explain anything to anyone, and no hotel on this island will make it awkward.

Check the steps before you book. This catches every couple, gay or otherwise. Many caldera hotels sit a hundred or more steps below the road. Ask the hotel directly and tell us the name when you book a transfer – we will tell you how far the walk is.

Shoulder season is better for a gay friendly Santorini trip. May, June, September and October. Warmer welcome, emptier lanes, and the island at its best.

Bring a hat and water. Obvious, and yet.

The inland villages are worth your evenings. Dinner in Megalochori or Emporio costs a third of a caldera table and the food is better.

Take one private day. The island is small but the roads are slow, parking is difficult, and the wineries are the point of the afternoon. Let somebody else drive.

Discretion in working villages. Not a warning, a courtesy – the same one you would extend in any residential neighbourhood at night, anywhere.

April. Gay friendly Santorini reopens. Cool, green and empty, and the caldera hotels are at their cheapest. Too cold to swim.

May. One of the two best months for a gay friendly Santorini trip. Warm, everything open, and the lanes walkable at any hour.

June. Warm sea, long evenings, and the July crowds not yet arrived. The best all-round month.

July. Hot and busy. Oia becomes difficult in the afternoon. Book restaurants and go inland for dinner.

August. Peak of everything. If you are here now, the inland villages and the quiet beaches are what make gay friendly Santorini bearable rather than exhausting.

September. The warmest sea of the year and the crowds thinning. For most couples the best month on the island.

October. Quiet, clear and beautiful. Businesses start closing from mid-month.

November to March. The caldera largely shuts. The inland villages stay open because people live in them, and a winter visit shows a completely different island.

Pride. Athens Pride is in June and Thessaloniki in the summer. Santorini has no Pride event; the island is welcoming rather than celebratory about it, which is the theme of this whole page.

Common Mistakes on a Gay Friendly Santorini Trip

Expecting gay friendly Santorini to be Mykonos. The single most common. There is no scene here and there never has been.

Booking a cliffside cave suite without asking about the steps. Romantic in the photographs, a hundred and eighty steps in reality.

Staying on the caldera and eating there every night. The same meal costs a third as much fifteen minutes inland.

Doing Oia castle for sunset every evening. Once is the experience. Twice is a queue.

Hiring a quad. The island’s roads are narrow and its hospital sees the results all summer.

Driving to three wineries. Somebody has to stay sober, and it should not be either of you on holiday.

Visiting in August and being surprised. Heat, crowds and prices all peak together.

Only seeing two villages. There are thirty-two, and the quiet ones are the reason people come back.

Why We Wrote This Gay Friendly Santorini Page

Most pages with this title are written by people who have never been here, and they all say the same three things: that the island is welcoming, that Greece is progressive now, and that you should book a caldera suite.

Two of those are true. The third is a sales line.

A Week on a Gay Friendly Santorini

Day one of a gay friendly Santorini week. Arrive, settle in, and take the caldera path north from Fira through Firostefani to Imerovigli in the late afternoon. Dinner inland.

Day two. Oia. Go in the late afternoon, walk the lanes before the crowd builds, take the castle for sunset once, and walk back to Finikia for dinner while everyone else queues for a bus.

Day three. The south: Akrotiri in the morning, the Red Beach, and the lighthouse at Faros for a sunset with room to stand.

Day four. The volcano and the hot springs by boat, with Thirasia for lunch.

Day five. The wine country – three estates, somebody else driving, and dinner in Megalochori.

Day six. A beach with nothing on it. Vlychada for the cliffs, Baxedes for the shade, Agios Georgios for the space.

Day seven. Ancient Thira at opening, then the black sand at Kamari, then a last dinner on a terrace.

Gay Friendly Beaches in Santorini

Santorini has the most beautiful beaches on its eastern and southern coast.  The beaches are great and well-organised with sun loungers.

The island’s unique geology of the beaches is the result of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history, some 3,600 years ago.

There are two gay friendly popular nudist beaches. You must have a car to get to Koloumbos beach, 8.5 km from the capital, Fira. You can eat traditional food taverna Soulis in Baxedes. When you reach the beach, after 100m further to the left to reach the gay popular section.

One of the best nudist beaches and easy to reach is Vlychada. You can go the resort of Perivolos on foot or by bus. As it’s easy to access, it’s more straight.

If you are keen on something different we think that the best place for sunbathing is on the terrace of a hotel overlooking the caldera.
