Oia Transfer: Getting to the North of Santorini

An Oia transfer is the longest and most awkward journey on the island, and the one most worth booking in advance. Oia sits at the northern tip, thirty minutes from the airport and thirty-five from Athinios port, at the end of a road that fills before every sunset and empties into a taxi rank that does not exist.

This page covers our private Oia transfer service from Santorini airport and both ports, to Oia, Finikia and Baxedes: what it costs, how the meeting works, and the one thing about Oia hotels that catches almost everybody out.

What the Oia transfer service is

A private vehicle and a licensed driver, meeting you at the airport or the port with your name on a board and taking you directly to your accommodation. Not shared, not on a timetable, and priced per vehicle rather than per person.

Where it goes

Oia itself, Finikia a kilometre east, Baxedes and the north coast, and Ammoudi below the village.

What it costs

From 40€ per vehicle. A family of four pays what a couple pays, and luggage is included.

Why the Oia transfer needs booking in advance

Because it is the far end of the island. Buses from the airport go to Fira and you change there. Taxis at a busy arrival are gone in minutes and rarely want a thirty-minute run north. An Oia transfer booked in advance removes all of that.

The Steps Problem Nobody Mentions

This is the single most useful thing on this page and the reason we ask which hotel you are in before quoting an Oia transfer.

Oia is built down a cliff. The village sits on the caldera rim and the accommodation runs down the face below it. Many of the cave suites people book are reached only on foot, down stepped lanes, from a drop-off point on the main road.

How many steps. Anything from ten to well over two hundred, depending on the property. There are hotels in Oia where the walk from the nearest vehicle is five minutes downhill with your luggage, and five minutes uphill when you leave.

What we do about it. Tell us the hotel name when you book the Oia transfer and we will tell you honestly, before you arrive, how far the walk is and whether the hotel sends a porter. Most of the good ones do; not all of them mention it.

Porters. Several Oia hotels operate a luggage service from the road. Ask them directly when you confirm your room, not when you land.

The alternative. If the walk is a problem, Finikia is a kilometre away, largely flat, considerably cheaper, and a ten-minute walk from the Oia castle. A good number of our guests move there after one trip.

Pack for the Oia transfer. Two medium cases beat one enormous one on a stepped lane, every time.

How the Oia Transfer Works

Before you fly. To book the Oia transfer, Send us the flight or ferry number, the arrival time, how many of you there are and the name of the hotel. That is all we need.

We track the arrival. Flights into Thira are frequently delayed in summer and ferries run late all year. The driver knows and waits, at no extra charge.

The meeting. At the airport, in the arrivals area with a board carrying your name. At Athinios, at the top of the ferry ramp among the crowd of signs.

The Oia transfer drive. Around thirty minutes from the airport, thirty-five from Athinios, twenty-five from Fira. The road runs the length of the island through Vourvoulos and Imerovigli.

The drop-off. As close to the door as the lanes allow, which in Oia varies enormously. See the section above.

Payment. Agreed in advance. No meter, no surcharges, no negotiation at the kerb.

The return. Book it at the same time. For a summer departure we collect two and a half hours before the flight, because security at Thira is a single line and it backs up.

The Alternatives to a Private Oia Transfer

An honest comparison, because the private option is not always the right one.

The public bus. There is no direct airport bus to Oia. You take the airport service into Fira, walk to the central station, and change onto the Fira–Oia route. Two buses, a change with luggage, and a walk at the far end. Cheap, and fine if you are travelling light in daylight.

Taxi. Santorini's licensed fleet is very small. After a busy arrival the rank empties within minutes, and a thirty-minute run north is not the fare most drivers are waiting for. Possible, unreliable, and unpredictable in price.

Hire car. Sensible if you were hiring one anyway. Less so as an arrival plan: parking in Oia is genuinely difficult and the village itself is pedestrian.

Hotel shuttle instead of an Oia transfer. Several Oia hotels run one. Always ask when you book the room rather than assuming, and check whether it is included.

Shared shuttle. Cheaper per head than a private Oia transfer, but it waits until full and drops other parties first – and Oia is usually the last stop, because it is the furthest.

When private wins. With luggage, with children, after dark, in a group, or when your hotel is down a stepped lane. Which, in Oia, is most of them.

Oia Transfer Times and Distances

All Oia transfer times below are approximate, and all longer than the map suggests, because the road is narrow and busy.

Santorini airport to Oia – about 30 minutes.

Athinios port to Oia – about 35 minutes, including the climb out of the port.

Fira to Oia – about 25 minutes.

Oia to Finikia – 3 minutes, or a 15-minute walk.

Oia to Baxedes and the north coast – 10 minutes.

Oia to Imerovigli – 15 minutes.

Oia to Kamari or Perissa – 35 to 40 minutes.

Oia to Akrotiri – about 45 minutes, the longest journey on the island.

The sunset factor. In the two hours around sunset the Oia road and the village car parks are at their worst. If your Oia transfer lands in that window, allow extra, and expect the last stretch to be slow.

Arriving at Thira Airport and Athinios Port

The airport end of the Oia transfer

Small: one terminal, one baggage hall, and an arrivals area you cross in twenty paces. In July and August several aircraft land within the same hour and the hall fills completely – expect twenty to forty minutes between landing and standing outside. Everything happens on one strip of pavement: buses, taxis, hire cars and transfer drivers.

Athinios port

A quay cut into the base of the caldera cliff with one hairpin road out of it. Several hundred people and their luggage come off a ferry at once onto a very short strip of concrete, into a wall of people holding signs. If yours is among them you walk to the vehicle and go. Full guide to Athinios.

Not the old port

Cruise passengers tender to the old port directly below Fira, which is reached only by cable car, six hundred steps or donkey. No road goes there, so no Oia transfer can collect from it. Our shore excursion is built around that constraint.

Ferry cancellations

Sailings from Athinios are cancelled in strong meltemi wind, sometimes at short notice. Never book a flight for the same afternoon as a ferry.

Oia, Finikia and Baxedes: Which Are You Going To?

The three settlements an Oia transfer serves at the northern tip are minutes apart and completely different to arrive at.

Oia. The famous one, on the caldera rim. Beautiful, expensive, pedestrian, and stepped. Vehicles reach the main road and no further into the old village. Full guide to Oia.

Finikia. One kilometre east, behind the ridge, and one of the best-preserved settlements on the island. Rooms at a fraction of Oia prices, largely flat, and a ten to fifteen minute walk from the castle. An Oia transfer to Finikia is the same price and a much easier arrival. Full guide to Finikia.

Baxedes. Down on the north coast, two kilometres below Oia, where the beach is. Flat, quiet, and vehicles reach the door. Full guide to Baxedes.

Ammoudi. The little harbour at the bottom of the cliff below Oia, reached by three hundred steps or a narrow road. Fish tavernas and the boats to Thirasia. We can drop you at the top or drive down, depending on the hour.

Frequently Asked Questions About Oia Transfers

How much is an Oia transfer? From 40€ per vehicle for one or two people, luggage included. The price is per vehicle, so four people pay what two pay.

How long does it take from the airport? About thirty minutes. From Athinios port, about thirty-five.

Is there a direct bus from the airport to Oia? No. You take the airport bus to Fira and change onto the Fira–Oia route.

What if my flight is delayed? We track it. The driver waits and there is no extra charge.

Where does the driver meet me? In the arrivals area at the airport, or at the top of the ferry ramp at Athinios, with a board carrying your name.

Will the vehicle reach my hotel door in Oia? Often not. Oia is built down a cliff and many hotels are reached on foot down stepped lanes. Tell us the hotel name and we will say how far the walk is before you arrive.

Can you help with the luggage? The driver handles it to the drop-off point. Beyond that, several Oia hotels run a porter service from the road – ask them when you book the room.

Do you run at night? Yes, twenty-four hours a day, at the same price.

Can you collect from the old port below Fira? No. There is no road to it.

Do you cover Finikia and Baxedes? Yes, at the same price as Oia.

Do you take large groups? Yes. We run mini buses as well as cars, so a group travels in one vehicle.

Are child seats available? Ask when you book and we will arrange them.

How do I pay? The price is agreed in advance. No meter and no surcharges.

Should I book the return? Yes, at the same time. For a summer flight we collect two and a half hours before departure.

Book Your Oia Transfer

To book an Oia transfer, send us the flight or ferry number, the arrival time, how many of you there are and the name of your accommodation. You will get a confirmation by email with the price, the meeting point and the driver's details.

When to Book Your Oia Transfer

As soon as the flight is booked. Not because we will run out of vehicles, but because the hotel question is easier to answer three months out than three hours out. If the steps turn out to be a problem, you still have time to change the room.

High season. July and August are the busiest months for an Oia transfer, with several aircraft landing within the same hour and the road north at its slowest around sunset. Book ahead and allow extra time either side.

Shoulder season. April, May, September and October are the easiest months to arrive: fewer flights, a quieter road and no queue at the airport.

Winter. Most of Oia closes from November to March. Flights are thinner, ferries are weather-dependent, and the village is largely shut. We still run the transfer, but check that your accommodation is open first.

Late arrivals. The service runs all night at the same price. A two in the morning Oia transfer is the one people are most glad to have booked, because there is no bus and effectively no taxi at that hour.

Changing plans. Tell us as early as you can if the flight changes. We would rather move the booking than have a driver waiting for an aircraft that is not coming.

What to Expect on the Drive North

The road from the airport to Oia runs the length of the island and is worth half an hour of attention rather than a phone screen.

The first ten minutes. Across the plain through the vineyards, past Mesaria and Karterados. Flat, green in spring, and nothing like the postcards.

Through Fira. The capital, busy at any hour, and the point at which the caldera first appears on your left.

Firostefani and Imerovigli. The road runs along the rim with the crater below it. On a clear afternoon this is the best part of the Oia transfer and most people spend it looking out of the window. Imerovigli.

The last stretch. Past Vourvoulos and out along the northern spine, with vineyards on both sides and the sea visible either way.

Arrival. Oia announces itself suddenly. The road narrows, the car parks appear, and the village begins.

Ask the driver. Our drivers live here. If you want to know where to eat, which evening to go to the castle or whether the boat to Thirasia is running, ask on the way in rather than looking it up later.
