Characteristic of the settlement are its canaves buildings, as well as the captains with the neoclassical elements.
The canaves of Oia are houses without foundation, but they are spread out in space and the light that bathes them early, without anything interrupting the sequence of their lines and colors.
Always there is such a yard, with a small little flower bed, the algal, where there are jasmine and gloom, leeches and lavender.
In 1993, by Presidential Decree, Oia was declared a traditional settlement. Like the whole island complex of Santorini, it has been characterized as an area of special natural beauty.
History of Oia
The area called Pano Meria, because it is located on the northern upper part of the island.
Oia is a model settlement with modern infrastructure. Unrestricted by the overhead power and telephony cables, it has underground cabling networks, seawater desalination plant, bio-cleaning units.
The village was significantly affected by the earthquake in 1956.
In the 1970s, however, through the pilot project of the Hellenic Tourism Organization for the Development and Utilization of Traditional Settlements, the first sewerage networks, the weaving and the initial installation of the Naval Museum were placed in Oia.
Churches, mills and other histirical buildings have also been restored. The work of the EOT was awarded with a prize by Europa Nostra in 1979 and by the Biennale of Sofia Architecture in 1986.
Then private individuals were restoring buildings to turn them into hotels, restaurants, shops and more.
