Fira

Fira is the capital of Santorini, located in the middle, on the eyebrow of the caldera and gathers not only most of the services, but also the visitors. Throughout the year the small town is buzzing with life: Supermarkets, grocery stores, shops, banks and public services are located around the central town square, Theotokopoulos Square, while travel agencies, hotels and rooms for rent, restaurants and bars you can find it in almost every alley, especially in the caldera.

Museums, churches, monuments, galleries, the traditional neighborhoods where the island’s architecture stands out, all are found in. abundance. The same abundance prevails in the entertainment options, as apart from the restaurants and cafes, many of which seem to “hanging” from the caldera, Fira also claims the top spot in Santorini’s nightlife, as there are many bars and clubs operating in the alleys.

In Fira, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy yet another unique experience. From Gialos, the old port where the cruise ships dock when they visit the island, a cable car starts that takes its enchanted passengers to the top of the caldera. An alternative option for those who want to go down to the small port, walk among the small shops and taste fresh fish in the taverns, is the 600 stone steps.

If someone does not want to walk the distance themselves, they can use the donkeys, the lovable animals that have been used for this purpose for many, many years. From Gialos one can also board a boat for a tour of the Volcano, Palaia and Nea Kameni and Thirasia, while many admit that no one can understand the greatness of Santorini without seeing the caldera and from the sea.

Oia

Oia of Santorini is the most famous settlement of the island, known all over the world for its unique sunset, when the sun sinks into the blue sea behind the volcano. It is built in the northernmost part of the caldera and is a traditional settlement, with all-white houses , captains’ houses and caves, bright colors, and the blue domes of the churches to decorate the image.

It has all the tourist infrastructure of a modern destination, a rich market with shops and public transportation that connects it daily with many routes, especially in the summer months, with Fira, the capital of the island, which is about 11 kilometers away. The main street, parallel to the caldera, is paved with marble and, together with the alleys perpendicular to it, constitutes the heart of Oia. The village has become synonymous with the sunset of Santorini, as everyone gathers on the roofs and terraces around the castle of Agios Nikolaos to face the soeveryday, but at the same time uniquely impressive spectacle.

The most famous church in the village is Panagia Platsani, almost in the center. The Entrances of Panagia, Agios Nikolaos, the Resurrection, Christ the Hero are some of the churches worth seeing. Going down to the sea, on the small island of Amoudi is Agios Nikolaos Peramataris, while near Armeni one can see the white chapel dedicated to the Holy Seven Children.

The volcano

There is no other island in the world like Santorini and its uniqueness is mainly due to the volcano – so it makes no sense to visit the island and not see this natural phenomenon up close. It is active, while the Minoan Eruption is considered the largest in world history. Since then the Santorini volcano has erupted many times over the centuries, constantly changing the image of the island, creating and destroying various small islands around its perimeter. When the locals say volcano, they mean the small island of Nea Kameni, almost in the center of the circular perimeter formed by Santorini, Thirasia and Aspronisi. In Nea Kameni, after all, one can see vapors coming out of the bowels of the earth, while only about 60 years ago its most recent lands were formed, during the eruption of 1950. Right next to it, Palaia Kameni is the island that was formed before from about 2,000 years ago, during the eruption of 57 AD.

Today, visitors to Santorini have the opportunity not only to gaze at the volcano from the cliff of the caldera orsee it by sea from closer, but also to walk it. Boats to the volcano start both from Gialos, the old port of Santorini below Fira, Athinios, the modern port of the island, but also from Ammoudi, the port of Oia.

Prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri

The prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri in Santorini is one of the most important archaeological sites in the entire Mediterranean and is located in the south-eastern part of the island, at a distance of 15 kilometers from Fira. The part of the city that has come to light dates from the Late Bronze Age, i.e. at the end of the 17th century BC. The findings lead to the conclusion that it was an important center of the time, a cosmopolitan port with commercial relations with mainland Greece, the rest of the Aegean islands, but also Egypt and Syria.

The definitive end came from the so-called Minoan Eruption of the volcano, estimated around 1615 BC, while the findings show that the inhabitants had been “warned”: No human skeletons were found, few jewels and valuable objects were found, while on the contrary jars and other useful tools and utensils placed under thresholds to protect them.

Today, the visitor to the archaeological site can see a very representative sample: Multi-storied buildings, some public and some private, with their courtyards fully exposed. Public roads pass between them, while, based on the research, free spaces that functioned as squares emerge. Part of the drainage system is also distinct, while the way of construction of all the buildings is typical, based on the building materials of Santorini and complex techniques, which ensured both insulation from the weather conditions and anti-seismic protection, in such a sensitive area.

Santorini Blue Domes – The Viewpoint, the Hour and the Crowd

1. Thira or Fira

Fira is the largest settlement and capital in Santorini. To the west, below Fira is Gialos, the old port, where cruise ships dock and the cable car starts. Almost connected to Fira is Firostefani. 12. Kamari

Kamari is one of the most cosmopolitan and touristy beaches of Santorini 2025. It stretches for about 5 kilometers, in front of the homonymous settlement on the east coast of the island and, together with Perissa beach, attracts the most people every summer. Santorini Blue Domes: The Short Answer

The famous santorini blue domes are in Oia, on the north-western slope below the main street, and the classic three-dome view is from the walkway at the north end of the village near the Anastasi church, looking north-west with the sea behind them.

Go at seven in the morning. The domes face north and east, the light lands on them at the start of the day, and the viewpoint is a narrow path that holds perhaps twenty people comfortably and several hundred at sunset.

The santorini blue domes are churches, not decorations. Several are private chapels attached to houses, the paths run between somebody’s terrace and somebody else’s roof, and the whole reason the view still exists is that visitors keep to the marked walkways.

Where Exactly They Are

The three-dome view. Walk the main pedestrian street of Oia to the north end, past the Anastasi church, and follow the walkway down to the right. The three santorini blue domes line up below you with Skaros and the caldera beyond.

Agios Spyridon and Anastasi. The two santorini blue domes most often photographed together, immediately below the main path.

The church of Panagia. Further along, with a bell tower that lines up with the sea.

In Fira and Firostefani. Several more santorini blue domes on the rim path, far less crowded and photographed a fraction as often.

In Imerovigli. The Anastasi church and the chapels below it, with the best backdrop on the island.

Elsewhere. There are around 250 churches on Santorini and blue domes appear in every village, including Pyrgos, Emporio and Megalochori, where nobody is queueing for them at all.

The Best Time to Photograph Them

Sunrise to nine. The only hour the santorini blue domes genuinely work. Warm light on the domes, an empty walkway and the village silent.

Nine to eleven. The santorini blue domes fill steadily. Still workable.

Eleven to five. Hard light, a solid queue on a narrow path and cruise groups moving through. The santorini blue domes in the middle of the day are a crowd photograph.

Sunset. The domes are backlit and in shadow, and the walkway is full. The sunset is behind you here; this is the most common mistake visitors make.

Why the Domes Are Blue

The practical answer to why the santorini blue domes are blue. Lime whitewash and a copper-based blue pigment were the cheapest and most available materials on a volcanic island with no timber and no clay. Whitewash reflects heat and disinfects; the blue was mixed from what could be bought or made locally.

The colour is not compulsory. Contrary to the story, no law ever required blue and white. The palette became standard in the twentieth century and was reinforced during the 1960s and 70s as tourism grew.

The architecture. The santorini blue domes are barrel and hemispherical vaults built from volcanic stone and lime, because they resist earthquakes and shed the rare heavy rain.

Why the santorini blue domes are small. Most are private family chapels, built by one household and used a few times a year on the saint’s day.

How to Behave Up There

The viewpoint is a public walkway running between private houses, and it stays open because visitors treat it properly.

Stay on the path. The roofs and terraces around the santorini blue domes are people’s homes and hotel rooms.

No drones over the santorini blue domes. Restricted over the village, and deeply unpopular with everybody who lives there.

Do not block the walkway. It is narrow, it is the route to several houses, and a tripod across it stops everything.

Photo shoots. Commercial and wedding shoots on the walkway need permission and a licensed photographer will have it.

Noise at dawn. People are asleep ten metres away. Whisper.

Do not enter the churches uninvited. Most are locked; the ones that are open are working chapels.

Beating the Crowd

Sleep in Oia. The simplest santorini blue domes solution. Walk out at half past six and the viewpoint is yours.

Or arrange a driver. There is no bus early enough for first light. A car from Fira takes twenty-five minutes. See transfers.

Go in the shoulder months. The santorini blue domes in May, June, late September and October have the same light and a fraction of the crowd.

Photographing Them Properly

Six practical notes, because most people come away with the same disappointing frame of the santorini blue domes.

Bring a wide lens and a short telephoto to the santorini blue domes. The wide for the domes with the caldera behind them, the telephoto to compress the three of them into the classic stack.

Shoot from the walkway, not the wall. Standing on a wall above somebody’s roof is how the access gets closed for everybody.

Expose for the white. The whitewash blows out an hour after sunrise and the santorini blue domes lose their edges with it.

Wait for the sea. A ferry crossing the frame behind the domes is worth five minutes of standing still.

Try the santorini blue domes in cloud. Overcast days in April and November give the blue against grey that nobody else has.

Take the second shot from further back. Half the village, the domes small in the frame, the caldera underneath. It is a better photograph than the postcard.

What Else to Do Before Breakfast

If you are in Oia at seven for the santorini blue domes, the rest of the village is empty too, and it is the best hour of the whole trip.

The main street. Level, silent and yours, from the bus stop to the castle.

The castle ruin, five minutes from the santorini blue domes. The sunset viewpoint with several thousand people on it at eight in the evening, and nobody on it at seven in the morning.

Ammoudi. 280 steps below, with the fishing boats and the water flat. Take the road back up.

Breakfast at nine, when the santorini blue domes are busy again. By which time the first coaches are arriving and the santorini blue domes have a queue on them again.

Is Santorini Safe? The Short Answer

Yes. Santorini is one of the safer places in Europe to travel: violent crime is close to unknown, petty theft is uncommon, and walking alone at night in the villages is entirely normal. Those five account for almost every incident visitors have here. There is no natural shade on the island, the villages are stepped throughout, most viewpoints are unfenced above a 300-metre drop, ATVs are the main cause of hospital visits, and the beaches shelve quickly into deep water.

Plan around those and the island is as safe as anywhere you are likely to go. The volcano is monitored constantly and is not a reason to change a booking.

Crime

Violent crime. The first thing people mean by is santorini safe, and it is very rare here. Greece as a whole has one of the lower violent crime rates in Europe and Santorini is well below the national average.

Petty theft. Occasional pickpocketing in crowded Fira and Oia in August, and opportunistic theft from unlocked cars and beach bags. Ordinary precautions cover it.

Scams. Few, and mostly overpriced taxi rides and unlicensed “tours” sold on the street. Book transport in advance and the problem disappears.

Nightlife. Fira’s bars are busy rather than rough, and trouble is unusual.

Police. A station in Fira and a tourist police service used to helping visitors in English.

Women and Solo Travellers

The Volcano and Earthquakes

The part of “is santorini safe” that people actually mean, and it deserves a straight answer.

The volcano is active, which is the real question behind is santorini safe. Nea Kameni in the middle of the caldera last erupted in 1950. It is monitored continuously by the Institute for the Study and Monitoring of the Santorini Volcano and by Greek and international seismologists.

What monitoring means. Ground deformation, gas emissions and seismicity are measured in real time, and any change severe enough to matter would be known and announced well in advance.

The 2025 seismic swarm. In late January and February 2025 the area between Santorini and Amorgos produced thousands of small tremors. A state of emergency was declared as a precaution, schools closed and many residents left temporarily. The swarm was tectonic rather than volcanic, activity subsided through the spring, and the island returned to normal.

Buildings. Greek building codes are seismic codes, and structures here are built for it.

Tsunami. A theoretical risk in any Aegean seismic event, with warning systems in place and evacuation routes marked in the low-lying villages.

Heat and Sun

The single most common cause of trouble here, and the least respected.

Temperatures. The honest answer to is santorini safe in summer starts at 29 to 32 degrees in July and August, with humidity around 50 per cent and no cloud.

Shade. There is effectively none. No trees, no forest, and white stone that reflects the light back at you.

Where it goes wrong. The 588 steps at two in the afternoon, the volcano climb at midday, and the rim path to Oia started at eleven. People are helped off all three every summer.

Water. Two litres a day each in summer, and carry it, because there is nothing to buy on the ridge.

The rule. Nothing outdoors between eleven and four from June to September.

Sunburn. Easiest on a boat, where the breeze hides it.

So, is santorini safe in August? Yes, if you treat the heat as the hazard it is and move your day to the edges.

Steps, Cliffs and Falls

The villages. Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia are stepped throughout, on cobbles polished smooth by centuries of use.

The edges, the sharpest part of is santorini safe. Most of the caldera rim is unfenced above a 200 to 300 metre drop. There are no barriers on the rim path and none at most viewpoints.

Photographs. Almost every serious accident on the rim involves somebody backing towards an edge for a picture. Stand still and let the camera move.

Footwear. Trainers or walking shoes. Sandals on wet cobbles are how ankles go.

The rim path. Loose gravel on the descents between Imerovigli and Oia, and it is the second most common place for a twisted ankle.

At night. Village lanes are lit; the path between villages is not.

Roads, Quad Bikes and Driving

Hire cars. Fine. The roads are good, the distances are short, and the only real difficulty is parking in Fira and Oia.

Licences. An International Driving Permit is required alongside a non-EU licence, and rental companies do check.

The road to Athinios. Steep switchbacks with buses coming the other way. Slow down.

Drink driving. The limit is low and enforced.

The Sea

Health, Water and Food

The hospital. The medical half of is santorini safe: a general hospital at Karterados near Fira with an emergency department. Serious cases are flown to Athens or Heraklion.

Pharmacies. In every large village, well stocked, and Greek pharmacists give good practical advice.

Tap water. Desalinated and safe for washing and teeth. Everybody drinks bottled, including us, because it tastes better.

Food hygiene. Good. Stomach upsets here are usually heat, sun and too much wine rather than the food.

Insurance. Essential, and check the small print on quad bikes: many policies exclude them entirely, which is another argument against hiring one.

Mosquitoes. Present in the evening inland and no serious disease risk.

So is santorini safe medically? Yes, with the usual proviso that a small island hospital is not a large city one, and that anything major means a flight.

Boats, Ferries and the Wind

The meltemi. The boating half of is santorini safe: the northerly wind of July and August cancels catamarans, volcano boats and occasionally fast ferries. Cancellation is the safety system working, not a failure of it.

Fast ferries. Uncomfortable in a strong swell and perfectly safe. The conventional ferries are steadier.

Tenders. Cruise ships anchor in the caldera and tender ashore, and the transfer stops in bad weather, which is why ships sometimes skip the island entirely.

Small boats. Licensed, inspected and crewed by people who have grown up on this water.

Life jackets. Available on every boat; ask if you want one for a swimming stop.

Is It Safe Right Now?

The question people are really asking after the 2025 seismic swarm, and the answer has three parts.

Seismically, which is what is santorini safe now usually means. The swarm subsided during 2025 and the island returned to normal operation, with flights, ferries, hotels and restaurants running as usual. Monitoring continues, as it has for decades.

Officially. No government advises against travel to Santorini. Check your own foreign ministry’s advice before any trip, as you would anywhere.

What Locals Worry About and Visitors Do Not

Ask anybody who lives here whether is santorini safe and the list they give is different from the one in the guidebooks.

The roads at two in the morning. Unlit, no pavements, and people walking home from tavernas in dark clothes. This is the genuine hazard on this island and almost nobody writes about it.

The rented quad bikes. Every islander has an opinion about them and it is the same opinion.

The cliff edge with a camera. The rim is loose volcanic ash and pumice, and it crumbles. Standing on the wrong side of a low wall for a photograph is the accident that happens here.

People swimming after a long lunch, the version of is santorini safe nobody prints. Deep water, sun, wine, and nobody watching.

Santorini shopping is worth doing for four things: wine, food, jewellery and art. Assyrtiko and Vinsanto at the winery, capers and fava from a grocer, and ceramics or prints from a village workshop. Everything else on the main streets of Fira and Oia is imported souvenir stock at a caldera markup.

September in Santorini Tours is the favorite time not only of locals, but also of eclectic vacationers. The hot summer is over, the sea is warmer than ever and the sky is blue all day, while the afternoons are cool. September sunsets paint Oia gold and the deep blue of the Caldera becomes more intense these days.

September is the right month to visit the island. Take a walk to the shops, enjoy your coffee in a cafe-bar with a view of the magical sunset or your food in a luxurious restaurant.

The most photographed preserved settlement of Santorini, famous around the world for the enchanting sunset at the Castle. Oia with its picturesque alleys, impressive captain’s houses and many churches with painted domes will steal your heart. It is about 40 minutes from Fira by car. It is considered more quiet than the bustling Fira with its intense nightlife and an ideal destination for romantic escapes from everyday life! Here you will find very good restaurants and an interesting market for art, antiques and ethnic items.

If you plan to visit Santorini in spring or autumn, dare to get to know it on foot. Wear comfortable shoes and follow the old path that joins its settlements on the rim of the Caldera. The images you will see will reward you for any fatigue you may feel in your body. From Fira to Firostefani and Imerovigli and from there continue to Oia just before sunset. You won’t regret it.

And while the sunset in Oia is one of the most famous, the truth is that wherever you enjoy it, just being in Santorini and getting lost in the colors of the sunset is enough in itself.

In Fira you can enjoy this magical time of day on the roof of a bar on the eyebrow of the caldera while drinking a cocktail. In Oia, the golden hour lovers run to the ruins of the castle to capture the moments on their cameras. Black beach, red beach, organized beaches or secluded bays, with sand, pebbles or shores surrounded by steep, white cliffs. One thing is certain. The beaches of Santorini have a special, wild beauty.

At Red Beach with its imposing red and black rocks (the result of volcanic activity) you will swim in dark blue crystal waters with underwater hot springs and sunbathe on red sand, alternating with black pebbles. Continuing to Aspri Paralia you will enjoy your swim with a view of the impressive white rocks that surround it.

Choose the organized beach of Perissa and lie on very fine black pebbles. You will find a similar landscape, but without the same infrastructure with fine black sand and dark pebbles on the beach of Vlychada. In Perivolos and Kamari you will find the most popular beach bars of Santorini, while in Ammoudi (port of Oia) after your dives you will eat fresh fish in the fish taverns operating by the sea.

Santorini Shopping: The Short Answer

Santorini shopping is worth doing for four things: wine, food, jewellery and art. Everything else on the main streets of Fira and Oia is imported souvenir stock sold at a caldera markup, and you can buy the same magnet in any port in Greece.

The wine is the obvious santorini shopping answer. Assyrtiko, Nykteri and Vinsanto come from ungrafted vines grown nowhere else, and buying at the winery costs roughly half the restaurant price. The food is the second: capers, caper leaves, fava, white aubergine, dried cherry tomatoes and tomato paste, all of them genuinely from here.

For everything else in santorini shopping, walk one street back. The lanes behind the main drag in Fira, and the villages of Pyrgos, Megalochori and Emporio, hold the workshops where the good jewellery, ceramics and prints are actually made.

What Is Actually Made Here

Wine. The one santorini shopping purchase with no equivalent anywhere else. Buy at the winery, ask them to pack it for the hold, and take Vinsanto if you can only take one bottle.

Capers and caper leaves. Preserved in salt or vinegar, a staple of the island’s cooking and impossible to buy at this quality at home.

Fava. Split yellow peas grown in volcanic ash, with a PDO of their own, and the best thing to bring back for anybody who cooks.

Cherry tomato products. Sun-dried tomatoes, tomato paste and tomatokeftedes mixes, all from the small intense tomatoes the island is known for.

Jewellery. The other santorini shopping category worth the money: several serious workshops make pieces here rather than importing them. Ask where it was made and expect a straight answer in the good shops.

Ceramics and prints. Small studios in Pyrgos, Megalochori, Oia and Emporio, where the work is signed and the prices are reasonable.

Volcanic stone and lava jewellery. A local speciality, and it is genuinely local when it is not a stall.

Where to Shop

Fira main street. The largest concentration of santorini shopping on the island, ranging from serious jewellers to pure souvenir stock. Busy between eleven and five and pleasant in the evening.

The lanes behind Fira. One street back from the rim, where the rents are lower and the goods are better.

Oia. The best art galleries, the best bookshop in the Cyclades and the highest prices on the island. Beautiful, and santorini shopping here costs a premium for the address.

Pyrgos. The best village for santorini shopping: small workshops in the lanes below the castle, and the most rewarding place on the island to browse.

Megalochori and Emporio. Quiet, local, and where several ceramicists actually work.

The wineries. The only sensible santorini shopping stop for wine, at half the restaurant price.

The supermarkets. Underrated santorini shopping for food souvenirs: the same capers and fava at a third of what the gift shops charge.

A Shopping Afternoon That Works

One afternoon covers everything worth buying, and this is the order we would do it in.

16:00, a winery. Taste first, buy afterwards, and let them pack the bottles. This is the half of santorini shopping that nowhere else can sell you.

17:30, Pyrgos. The workshops in the lanes below the castle, where the ceramics and prints are made rather than imported.

18:30, a supermarket or a village grocer. Capers, fava, dried tomatoes and tomato paste at a third of gift-shop prices.

19:30, Fira. The main street once the ships have gone, for jewellery and the one or two shops worth the rim rent.

21:00, dinner inland. Because the day should not end in a shop.

Packing It All Home

Wine. Hold luggage only, wrapped at the winery, and two bottles per bag is the sensible limit unless you have a wine case.

Food. Capers in brine count as a liquid; salted capers and dried fava do not. Buy the dry versions if you have hand luggage only.

Ceramics. Ask the studio to wrap them properly, and carry them rather than checking them.

Weight. A serious santorini shopping trip adds five or six kilos to a suitcase, which matters on a low-cost airline.

Shipping. A few of the larger wineries and galleries will ship, which is worth asking about for anything heavy or fragile.

What to Avoid

Anything in santorini shopping with a donkey on it. The trade it advertises is the one we ask visitors not to support.

Mass-produced “handmade” ceramics. If the same piece is in four shops, it was not thrown on this island.

Evil eyes and magnets. Made in bulk, sold everywhere in Greece, and the least interesting result of any santorini shopping trip.

Wine bought on the caldera rim. Double the winery price for the same bottle.

Fur and leather “bargains”. Neither is local and neither is a bargain.

Duty-free at the airport. Small, expensive and short of anything actually from the island.

Anything you have to carry down eighty steps. Think about the hotel before you buy the ceramic bowl.

Prices and Practicalities

Wine, the santorini shopping staple. 12 to 25 euros a bottle at the winery for good Assyrtiko, 25 to 45 for Vinsanto, and roughly double either in a rim restaurant.

Capers and fava. 4 to 9 euros a jar or bag, and cheaper in the supermarket than in the gift shops.

Jewellery. Anything from 40 euros for small silver work to several thousand for the serious pieces.

Ceramics. 15 to 60 for a good small piece from a studio.

Santorini shopping opening hours. Roughly 10:00 to 22:00 in season, with many shops closing for a few hours in the afternoon and most shutting entirely from November to March.

Payment. Cards almost everywhere, and cash is welcome in the villages.

Bargaining. Not the custom here. Ask politely about a discount on multiple bottles and expect a fair answer.

Tax free. Available for non-EU visitors in the larger jewellery shops; ask before paying.

Flying home. Wine goes in the hold, wrapped by the winery. Liquids over 100ml will not pass security.

When and How to Do It

The best hours for santorini shopping. Before eleven in the morning or after seven in the evening, for exactly the same reason as everything else on this island: between those hours Fira and Oia belong to the cruise crowds.

The best day. Any day without three or more ships in the caldera. The schedule is published.
