This tour which will take us first all the way up to the summit Mount Profitis Ilias , home to the monastery of the same name. At 600 meters above sea, this is the highest point of the island and words cannot describe the stunning view of the island, the caldera and the sea from this altitude.
Next is a special destination, the Venetian tinged Pyrgos. The village exhibits all the charm of Santorini and panoramic views but its traditional architecture, galleries and old castle also give it a certain Venetian character, making Pyrgos a truly magical place not to be missed.
Our journey will then take us to the legendary the Caldera, a location you must definitely visit before leaving Santorini. And, of course, we cannot leave out the scenic village of Oia, built on the steep slope of the Caldera. With its majestic sunsets and inspiring views, traditional houses built in niches in rock and charming narrow paths, all immersed in a tranquil and idyllic atmosphere, Oia is the definitive embodiment of what Santorini has to offer.
Next, at Firostefani village, we will admire and photograph the renowned Blue Dome Church – the one that has been depicted in so many images that it has virtually become a symbol of the island. Visiting Imerovigli, you will admire the unique and quaint Cycladic architecture as displayed in the houses and churches of the village, especially Ai-Stratis and the Monastery of Saint Nikolaos.
Another stop will be Megalochori. With its warm atmosphere, historical mansions and pirate hideaways, it is one of the most picturesque and traditional villages of the island.
Santorini, among other things, is also known for its beautiful beaches. Our tour, therefore, cannot omit a visit at the famous Black Beach. Even if you choose not to swim, you will be more than content just sitting back and admiring the extraordinary sparkling waters and black sand of the Black Beach.
Venetsanos Winery will bring our tour to a perfect end. Do not miss the chance to try the distinguished local wines and the assortment of traditional products. The winery overlooks the Caldera, therefore, what better than to seize the moment and enjoy the majestic view accompanied with a glass of fine wine.

The Santorini Shore Excursion in Full
This Santorini shore excursion is five hours built entirely around a cruise call. It is not a day tour sold to cruise passengers – it is a different product, timed against your ship’s actual arrival rather than the published schedule, with the return margin built in rather than hoped for. Book with Santorini Tours, a licensed local operator.
We collect you at the old port below Fira or at Athinios, depending on where your tender lands, and we watch the ship rather than the clock. If your arrival slips by an hour, the itinerary compresses; it does not overrun.
Prices are per vehicle: 300€ for one or two guests, 328€ for three or four, 376€ for five or six, 400€ for seven or eight, rising to 800€ for the largest coach parties. Against a cruise line’s own excursion at 90€ to 140€ per person, a Santorini shore excursion with us is cheaper for any party of three or more and considerably more flexible.
What the Santorini shore excursion price includes
Port pickup and return, five hours with a licensed English-speaking driver-guide, a private air-conditioned vehicle, fuel, tolls, parking and bottled water. Not included: museum and site entry, winery tastings, food, and the Fira cable car at 6€ per person each way.
Santorini shore excursion cost compared with the ship’s own
The cruise line’s excursion is priced per person and guarantees the ship waits. Ours is priced per vehicle and cannot make that guarantee – no independent operator can, and anyone who tells you otherwise is not being straight with you. What the santorini shore excursion cost buys instead is a private vehicle, a route that bends to you, and a guide who is yours for five hours rather than one shared with forty-nine other people. The santorini shore excursion price does not change with the season.
How Tendering Actually Works in Santorini
This is the part that catches people out, and understanding it is most of what makes a Santorini shore excursion succeed or fail.
Santorini has no cruise berth. Ships anchor in the flooded caldera and run tenders to the old port below Fira. On a day with four or five ships that means several thousand people moving through one small quay in a couple of hours.
From the old port there are three ways up the 300-metre cliff: the cable car at 6€ per person each way, which queues badly when tenders are running; 588 steps, shared with donkeys and unpleasant in both directions; or the donkeys themselves, which we ask you not to use.
Some ships tender to Athinios instead, the working ferry port further south, which has a road and no cable car. Which one you get is decided by the port authority on the morning, not by your itinerary. A Santorini shore excursion that assumes the old port and finds itself at Athinios has already lost an hour.
We handle this by confirming your landing point on the morning and by routing around the cable car wherever the timing is tight. It is unglamorous logistics and it is the single most valuable thing about booking locally.
How much time you really have
A nine-hour call on paper is typically six to seven usable hours ashore once tendering in and out is deducted. That is why the Santorini shore excursion is five hours rather than eight, and why we will talk you out of the full day tour unless your ship is overnighting.
Where the Santorini Shore Excursion Goes
Five hours, three or four stops, ordered around your tender times and the other ships in port.
Oia
The village everyone wants. White houses stacked down the cliff, blue domes, the ruined castle at the western tip. On a Santorini shore excursion we aim to reach it either before the coach traffic or after it, never in the middle.
Firostefani and Imerovigli
The caldera rim north of Fira, quieter than Oia and with the wide crater view most people are actually picturing. Ten and thirty minutes’ walk from the capital respectively, and a two-minute drive.
A traditional village
Megalochori or Pyrgos. Vaulted mansions, free-standing bell towers, lanes too narrow for a coach, and nothing arranged for visitors.
A winery or a black sand beach
Depending on the time left and what you want. Assyrtiko from ungrafted vines grown in volcanic ash, or the dark sand at Perissa and Perivolos. Both are twenty minutes from the port.
Akrotiri, if you ask
The Bronze Age town buried by the eruption around 1600 BC and preserved under the ash – streets, drainage, three-storey houses. It is roofed, so it works in any weather, and it fits a Santorini shore excursion comfortably if you skip one village. Entry is about 12€ and not included.
Independent Santorini Shore Excursion or the Ship’s Own?
This is the real decision, so here it is straight, including the part that favours the cruise line.
What the ship’s excursion gives you. One guarantee: if their excursion runs late, the ship waits. That is a genuine protection and no independent operator can offer it. If missing the ship would be catastrophic for you – a tight flight home, medication on board, small children – that guarantee may be worth the premium on its own.
What it costs you. 90€ to 140€ per person, a coach with forty-nine other people, a fixed route that cannot reach Megalochori or the quieter viewpoints, and departure at the hour that suits the operation rather than you.
What an independent Santorini shore excursion gives you. A private vehicle for 300€ regardless of party size, a guide who is yours, a route you can change at nine in the morning, and access to villages a coach physically cannot enter. For a family of four that is 75€ each against 90€ to 140€ each, with a better day attached.
How we manage the risk. We build a real margin into the return, we track your ship’s actual arrival rather than the schedule, and we return you well before the last tender rather than at it. In years of running this we have not left anyone behind – but that is a record, not a guarantee, and we would rather say so than pretend.
Our advice is simple. If your cruise is the whole holiday and a missed ship is unthinkable, book with the line. If you want to actually see Santorini, book a private Santorini shore excursion and give yourself margin.
Santorini Shore Excursion 2026
For the santorini shore excursion 2026 season the direct-booking discount is already applied to every rate on this page, so the santorini shore excursion 2026 price you read is the price you pay. We now confirm your landing point – old port or Athinios – on the morning rather than at booking, because the port authority decides it on the day.
Availability for the santorini shore excursion 2026 is tightest on days with four or more ships alongside, which are also the days you most want a private vehicle. Send your ship name and date and we will tell you what the port looks like that day.
Booking a private santorini shore excursion
Send your ship, your date and your party size. An 80€ deposit confirms it and the balance is paid to your guide at the end. Santorini shore excursion booking is handled by us directly, never resold, and cancellation is free to seven days before. If your ship skips Santorini entirely – which happens in high wind – you are refunded in full without having to ask. That is the one risk that is genuinely ours rather than yours, and the best santorini shore excursion operators all cover it.
Practical Notes for Cruise Passengers
Tender times. Tell us your scheduled arrival and last tender when you book. We plan backwards from the last tender, not forwards from the first.
Where we meet. At the old port, at the top of the cable car, or at Athinios – confirmed on the morning. Your guide will have your name and your ship.
The cable car. 6€ per person each way and the single biggest queue risk of the day. On a busy call we route around it. If you must use it, allow forty minutes in high season.
Shoes. Grip, not sandals. Oia and the villages are cobbles, marble and steps.
Cash. Small notes for the cable car, entry fees and coffee. Card is widely but not universally accepted.
Time buffer. We return you a minimum of ninety minutes before the last tender as standard. Ask for more and we will build it in.
Wind. The meltemi occasionally stops tendering altogether and ships skip the island. That is nobody’s fault and you are refunded in full.
Changes ashore. Free. If you would rather skip a village and spend an hour in Oia, say so at the start.
Frequently Asked Questions About the Santorini Shore Excursion
How long is it? Five hours, port to port.
How much does it cost? From 300€ per vehicle for one or two guests. Per vehicle, not per person.
Will the ship wait if we are late? No. Only the cruise line’s own excursions carry that guarantee. We manage it with a ninety-minute return margin and by tracking the ship’s actual arrival.
Where do you collect us? The old port or Athinios, confirmed on the morning according to where your tender lands.
Is the cable car included? No, it is 6€ per person each way, and where timing is tight we avoid it entirely.
Can we fit Akrotiri in? Yes, if you drop one village. It is roofed, so it also works when the weather does not.
What if our ship arrives late? The itinerary compresses and the return time holds. That is the whole design of the Santorini shore excursion.
What if the ship skips Santorini? Full refund, automatically.
Is it suitable for older passengers? Yes, and we will build a route with less walking on request. Tell us before you book.
Can you handle a group from one ship? Yes, up to forty guests in a coach. Many of our santorini excursions are booked by groups travelling together.
What languages? English as standard, Greek any date; our santorini guided tours cover six languages with notice.
How does this compare with your other tours? It is the only one timed against tenders. Our other santorini day tours and santorini private tours assume you are staying on the island. Every itinerary and all santorini tours prices are on the santorini tours page, and our santorini island tours and santorini tour packages run from an hour to a full day.
Book the Santorini Shore Excursion
Send your ship, date and party size and we will confirm the same day. To reserve directly: shore excursion booking, sunset, north part, south part, sightseeing, full day, famous sights, historical, personalised, food experience, wine, horse riding.
An 80€ deposit confirms the Santorini shore excursion, with the balance paid at the end of the day. We are licensed by the Greek National Tourism Organisation and every excursion is run by us rather than subcontracted.
Planning a Santorini Shore Excursion by Call Length
How long your ship is alongside changes what is sensible, and the right Santorini shore excursion is different in each case.
A short call, six hours or less. Three to four usable hours ashore. Oia and one caldera viewpoint, nothing else. Anyone selling you a full island tour on a six-hour call is selling you a bus ride with photographs taken through glass. We would rather run you a shortened Santorini shore excursion and return you early.
A standard call, eight to ten hours. Five to seven usable hours. This is exactly what the Santorini shore excursion is built for: Oia, the caldera rim, a traditional village and either a winery or a beach, with a ninety-minute margin at the end.
A long call or an overnight. Some itineraries stay until late evening or overnight in the caldera. That changes everything – you can take the full eight-hour day tour, or the Santorini shore excursion in the morning and the sunset tour in the evening, which is the best day anyone gets on this island from a ship.
Two ships from the same line. If you are travelling with friends on a second ship, tell us. We can synchronise two vehicles and put your parties together for the day.
Send your ship name and date and we will look up the actual port schedule for you before you commit to anything. That check costs nothing and it is the difference between a good Santorini shore excursion and a stressful one.
The Old Port and Athinios Compared
Which port you land at shapes the whole day, and most passengers do not know it varies.
The old port (Skala). Directly below Fira, at the foot of a 300-metre cliff. No road access for coaches. Up is the cable car, 588 steps, or a donkey. It is picturesque and it is a bottleneck: on a four-ship day the cable car queue can run to forty minutes in each direction. A Santorini shore excursion that starts here needs the cable car time built in, and we build it in.
Athinios. The working ferry port further south, with a proper road up a series of switchbacks. Larger, uglier, and far more efficient for a vehicle. If your tender lands here, your Santorini shore excursion effectively gains half an hour.
Which you get is decided by the port authority on the morning based on ship size, wind and traffic. Your cruise line will tell you the night before at the earliest. We confirm it with you on the morning and adjust the route accordingly – that adjustment is the reason to book locally rather than from a call centre.
The donkeys
You will be offered a donkey ride up from the old port. We ask you not to take it. The animals working those steps carry loads and hours that welfare organisations have criticised repeatedly, and the cable car exists. No Santorini shore excursion we run includes a donkey ride and we will say why if you ask.
What to Skip on a Santorini Shore Excursion
Five hours is not eight, and choosing what to leave out is most of the skill.
Skip the Red Beach. Twenty-five minutes each way from the port, a car park that fills by ten, a walk over loose rock, and periodic rockfall closures. Spectacular from the viewpoint and rarely worth the time on a Santorini shore excursion.
Skip the volcano boat trip. Nea Kameni and the hot springs need three to four hours on the water. It is a good day out and it is not compatible with a cruise call.
Skip the wine tour proper. A single winery stop fits. Three does not.
Skip Ancient Thera. The switchback road up Mesa Vouno takes too long. Akrotiri is the archaeology that fits.
Do not skip Oia. It is the reason you are here, and every Santorini shore excursion we run includes it unless you specifically ask otherwise.
Do not skip the Prehistoric Museum if you are doing Akrotiri. Forty minutes in Fira and it turns the excavation from stones into a town.
Weather and the season
April, May, September and October are the best months for a Santorini shore excursion – comfortable temperatures, thinner crowds and reliable tendering. July and August are hot and the island is at its busiest, so the early start matters more. In strong meltemi conditions tendering is occasionally suspended and ships skip the island altogether, in which case you are refunded in full.
Groups, Families and Accessibility
Above eight guests a Santorini shore excursion moves to a minibus, and above sixteen to a coach, with the rate stepping up to 800€ for a party of thirty-one to forty. For extended families, friends travelling on the same ship and small charter groups this is by some distance the cheapest way per head to see the island properly, and it removes the problem of forty people trying to find each other at the top of the cable car.
For passengers with limited mobility, tell us before you book. Several caldera viewpoints, the wineries and Akrotiri’s walkways are reachable without steps, and a Santorini shore excursion built around those is a genuinely good day rather than a compromise. What does not work is Oia’s main lane and the old port steps, and we would rather rearrange the route than have you discover that ashore.
Families with young children generally do best with a shortened route and a beach stop. Say so and we will build the Santorini shore excursion around nap times and shade rather than around viewpoints.
