Akrotiri is one of the most remarkable archaeological sites of our country, which came to light in the excavations of the archaeological team of Spyros Marinatos in 1967. From the excavations, a whole prehistoric settlement was found, first inhabited around 3000 BC. reaching a significant growth during the Middle Cycladic era.
The huge eruption of the volcano of Santorini around 1500 BC. destroyed the city and buried it under the lava and ash. The explosion was so strong that the tidal wave that was caused by it traveled to Crete and destroyed its cities, marking the end of the Minoan civilization. Traditional cave houses, simple churches and cobbled streets complete this beautiful settlement, which is fairly listed as a preservable. Imerovigli is only one kilometer away from Firostefani, the last neighborhood of Fira.
Kamari is a touristic center which beach consists of black pebble. It is a new settlement with many restaurants, hotels, rooms to let and a few orchards on the outskirts. It is 10 km from Fira. Megalohori ascending from Athinios port, 6 km from Fira, it is the first village you come across. Traditionally, it has preserved the neo-classical architecture of the neo-classical houses, narrow streets and cobbled streets.
Messaria is a village built in the middle of the island, 3.5 km away from Chora. Its special feature is the vineyards that surround it. From Pyrgos, which is 7.5 km from Fira, you have literally all the island at your feet. It is a large Mediterranean village, built on the slope of Prophet Elias, on the highest point of the island. It is an imposing settlement, which until 1800 was the capital of the island. At the top of the hill is Kastelli, a settlement with a wonderful view.
