We start with a visit to Venetsanos Winery, built in 1947 and located above the port of Athinios, and of course, tasting local wines and trying other traditional products is involved in our program. Overlooking the caldera, Venetsanos Winery will definitely reward the visitor with its spectacular views of the island, its villages and the Aegean.
Our journey will next take us to Firostefani, lying to the north of Fira. Its elevated position in relation to the town of Fira has blessed this location with some of the most stunning views on the island.Here is also where the Blue Dome Church lies, the church which is so prominently displayed in so many postcards, guidebooks and travel guides. Firostefani is one of the most picturesque villages on the island – the serene atmosphere and magnificent sunset will surely create a unique and unforgettable experience that will remain with you for a long time to come.
Our itinerary now takes us to Oia, the famous village of Santorini and one of incomparable beauty. This is certainly the most popular spot for watching the sunset. The endless palette of attractions here is nothing less than glorious: magnificent sunsets against red orange skies, panoramic views of the Caldera and the Aegean, traditional houses in niches inside the rock and a unique idyllic atmosphere.

Cruise passenger pick-up:
All cruise passengers with individual programs are taken to the old Port of Fira, by tender boats. From the port, you will take the cable car up to Fira town.
The journey with a cable car takes 2-3 minutes and costs €6. Approximate start of the tour should be 90 minutes after the scheduled arrival of the cruise ship.
The meeting point for the tour is at the cable car’s exit in Fira town. Your guide will wait for you there, holding a sign with your name.
Please include the name and arrival time of your ship, and full name and mobile phone number when booking of the tour in order for your pick-up to be arranged.

The Santorini Sunset Tour in Full
The Santorini sunset tour is four hours timed backwards from the sun. Where a fixed-schedule excursion leaves at a set hour whatever the date, this one starts so that you are standing in the right place at the right moment – which on Santorini shifts from about 17:15 in high summer to 14:45 by late October.
It is a land tour in a private air-conditioned vehicle with a licensed local guide, not a boat. That distinction matters: a sunset cruise gives you the cliffs from the water, which is beautiful, and gives you no control over where you are when the light goes. The Santorini sunset tour moves through the caldera villages and positions you at a viewpoint chosen for that evening’s conditions and that evening’s crowds.

Imerovigli
Our usual answer for the sunset itself, and the reason people come back and tell us we were right. Imerovigli sits at the highest point of the caldera rim, about 300 metres above the water, and the sun sets into open sea rather than behind Thirasia. It has a fraction of the crowd of Oia and you can sit down.
Firostefani
Ten minutes along the rim from Fira, quieter than the capital, with terraces where you can take a drink and watch the light change on the cliffs. The wide caldera photograph most people travel for is taken here rather than in Oia.
Oia
The famous one. The ruined Byzantine castle at the western tip gives the postcard view, and from May to September a crowd forms ninety minutes ahead and applauds at the end. If that is what you want, the Santorini sunset tour will get you there early enough to stand somewhere decent. We will also tell you honestly what it is like.
Akrotiri lighthouse
The southern tip, looking back up the length of the caldera. Almost nobody goes, the light on the cliffs in the last twenty minutes is the best on the island, and on a busy evening in August this is where we would take you.
A winery terrace
An alternative ending: a vineyard on the western slope with a glass of Assyrtiko as the sun drops. Tastings are paid at the door. Say so when you book and the Santorini sunset tour is routed to finish there.
Oia at Sunset, Honestly
You will read a great deal about the Oia sunset and very little of it is frank, so here is our assessment after years of taking people there.
The view is genuinely extraordinary. The sun drops between Thirasia and the open Aegean, the whitewashed village goes gold and then pink, and the whole caldera changes colour. Nobody disputes that it is worth seeing once.
The experience around it is a different matter. From late April to early October the castle ruin and the surrounding lanes fill from about ninety minutes before. In August you will be shoulder to shoulder, holding your position, with people climbing on walls for a better angle. Getting out afterwards takes forty minutes because several thousand people leave at once through lanes built for donkeys.
There are three ways to handle it, and the Santorini sunset tour can do any of them. Arrive early and accept the crowd. Watch from a terrace bar in Oia with a drink and a seat, booked ahead. Or go somewhere else entirely – Imerovigli, Firostefani or the Akrotiri lighthouse – which is what most of our guests choose once they have been told the truth.
The one thing we will not do is deliver you to the castle at 18:50 in August and pretend it is a viewpoint. That is what a coach excursion does, and it is why people come back from the Oia sunset disappointed.
Sunset Times and When to Book
The Santorini sunset tour starts four hours before sunset, so the pickup time moves through the season. Approximate sunset times: late March 18:30, April 20:00, May 20:20, June 20:45 – the latest of the year – July 20:40, August 20:10, September 19:30, October 18:45, and around 17:20 in December.
Those times shape everything. A Santorini sunset tour in June finishes near eleven at night and you will want a late dinner; the same tour in October has you back by seven. In midsummer the light stays usable for a good forty minutes after the sun is down, which is when the best photographs of the villages are actually taken.

A sunset cruise puts you on the water looking back at the cliffs, usually with the volcano and the hot springs earlier in the afternoon and dinner on board. It runs five to six hours, costs 90€ to 150€ per person, and the view of the caldera wall from below is genuinely spectacular. What you give up is control: the boat is where the boat is when the sun goes, and if you are prone to seasickness the meltemi in July and August is not gentle.
The Santorini sunset tour by land is four hours, costs 240€ for the whole vehicle, and puts you in the villages. You can change the ending an hour beforehand, you are never more than twenty minutes from your hotel, and nobody is seasick. What you give up is the view from the water.
Our honest advice: if you have two evenings, do one of each. If you have one evening and you have never seen Oia, Imerovigli or Firostefani, take the Santorini sunset tour by land. If you have already walked the caldera villages, take the boat.
We do not operate boats and we will not sell you one. Ask your guide and they will tell you which operators are good, which are overbooked, and which sell “sunset” trips that turn for home before it happens.
Photographing the Santorini Sunset
The Santorini sunset tour is booked for photographs more than for anything else, so a few things worth knowing.
The hour before matters more than the moment. The light on the white villages between about ninety and thirty minutes before sunset is warmer and far more flattering than the sun itself, which blows out as a white disc on most phones.
Shoot the village, not the sun. Turn around. The caldera wall and the houses going gold is the picture; the sun over the sea is the picture everyone else has.
Stay twenty minutes after. Blue hour on Santorini is exceptional – the whitewash holds the last light and the village lamps come on. Almost everybody leaves and misses it. On the Santorini sunset tour we stay.
