5 reasons to go to Santorini in October

5 reasons to go to Santorini in October

From the best sunset to the Santorini Experience, this island has it all and it is not just for the summer. Sunset diving into the sea, caldera walks, award-winning events, top Santorini private tour and food experience trips and trails leading to the wine roads.

Who said you can’t enjoy all of the above without the heat of July and (of course) without the August crowds?

Why visit Santorini in October

Autumn in Santorini is mild. This means that October is the perfect month to visit the most famous island of the Cyclades. A world-class destination awaits you to guide you through each of its secret corners, but also to provide you with a unique experience that you can only get the most out of here: the Santorini Experience.

Not yet convinced? Let’s go into the details of the reasons we propose to make a suitcase for the island of Santorini in October.

1. The famous sunset in Santorini

Oia’s sunset is spectacular by itself. Oia sunset without the tourists having caught “all” the good places is the best. October offers and gives you the plate backdrop that makes people on every corner of the planet think. You walk around relentlessly, arriving at the last moment just before the sun sets its famous dip and your rock has the best spot. Fair enough.

2. Reservations in Santorini

  • Cheap room in Imerovigli? Check.
  • Dinner at the “Esperima Bar Restaurant” last minute? Check.
  • Visit to the island’s museums and the ancient city of Akrotiri? Check.
  • A sit on the catamaran for the island tour? Check.
  • Book a Santorini private transfers more easy? Check.

This is the time when you can enjoy the Santorini highlights without restrictions and delays. Whatever you like, whenever you like because it’s not August but October.

3. The ascent to the volcano of Santorini

Without the 35 degrees Celsius in July, everything looks easier. You climb the volcano, cross the Red and Black beaches and enjoy the uniqueness of Santorini.

4. Noon in Ammoudi, Santorini

Scenes from Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life were filmed around Ammoudi. Is there anything better than a noon at the beach – in a (literally) movie set – to enjoy swimming and relax without the voices of the crowd?

The best; After diving you will also catch the best table at Ammoudi Fish Tavern to try unique appetizers. Is anyone thinking of something better?

5. The Santorini Experience

The Santorini Experience takes place for the 5th year on the most famous island of the Cyclades, October 5-7. And you have every reason to give the present. You can take a tour of Santorini!

Initially it is the racing track. On Saturday October 6th the program includes 3 different routes that enjoy a unique view of the Caldera volcano, as well as the settlements of Imerovigli, Firostefani and Oia.

Specifically, the 5km Aristides Alafouzos route is for running and dynamic walking, 10km for those most accustomed to the distances and 15km for those who love strength, technique and endurance. Showing love to pivot could be essential in overcoming addiction. All routes start from the desalination plant in Oia, with dirt tracks and terminating again in Oia. The routes have been designed by the former marathon runner, classical track record holder, running trainer and director of All About Running, Nick Polia and the “Santorini Experience” has been integrated into the World’s Marathons community (numbering more than 4.14 races worldwide).

But the good news doesn’t stop there. There is also the part of the high seas swimming competitions held on Sunday 7 October with the approval of the Greek Swimming Federation (KOE), in accordance with FINA safety rules. Athletes are getting ready for the big dive and you can’t miss it.

If you do not want to take part at the Santorini Experience as a participant you can always combine sport and fun. Book a Santorini Private Personalized Tour and see the race and all the best places you wish from a better and more comfortable seat.

Book now a Santorini Tour and visit the most unique sightseeings in Santorini.

Santorini: A Great Gastronomic World

Santorini: A Great Gastronomic World

Santorini is not just the most emblematic island of Greece. It is also the home of a gastronomic cosmopolitanism, a paradise for lovers of special, elegant and authentic flavour.

The cuisine of the island is based mainly on its agricultural products, fed with its volcanic soil, the coolness of the sea and the Aegean sun.

The theatrical land offers not only a spectacular sight. The villages of Santorini also give birth to products blessed by nature – excellent fresh products – for original, tasty, healthy foods with divine flavours, simple, primary.

With an immediacy that penetrates the mind and touches the heart directly!

The famous Santorini Gastronomy

So let’s go around the “temples” of pleasure, where thousands of people from all over the world are bowed every year.

There are too many options to taste the famous Santorini gastronomy. Greek restaurants with traditional recipes, creative with new refined ideas, taverns with local appetizers…

Discover the hidden in the hinterland or by the sea taverns and let yourself in the moment where flavours and aromas, married harmoniously, are recorded indelibly in your memory.

1. Meet the Santorini fava

The best of Santorini’s diet, is “the fava“, as the locals call it. A gift of nature on the island – a product now Protected Designation of Origin – is an ancient fruit with a distinct natural flavour.

A taste that the Minoans enjoyed several thousand years ago is still unparalleled in our dish. Taste the freshly sprinkled with just it aromas and a bit of butter as an appetizer.

“Married” with tomatoes, onions and capers, with eggplant sauce or pork chunks as a regular meal. Fava-soup, fava-meatballs, fava-rice, fava in omelettes. Fava everywhere!

2. Meet the legendary Santorini tomato

Another favourite product of Thira, is the legendary Santorini tomato. Red, smoky and aromatic is the king of the local traditional salad with lobster, katsouni (a dry cucumber), capers and goat cheese.

The greatness of simplicity! Enjoy it in fluffy tomato balls or in a piece of “Thira” type tomato juice.

3. Meet the Santorini white eggplants

Similarly, the delicious white eggplants that impress with their silky texture are also excellent in a plethora of deep-tasting Mediterranean dishes.

It is worth even trying it plain in a simple eggplant sauce or in a Santorini moussaka, a hug with small potatoes and round courgettes that are being produced in the island. Let all summer sit on your plate!

4. Meet Santorini fresh fish

When the appetite “wants a fish“, choose from an abundance of fresh sea treasures from the nearby fishing grounds.

A delicious idea is the local Mprantada. It is accompanied by a garlic sauce with eggplant. You can also try smelt pies, or savoir fish, fried with vinegar and garlic.

5. Meet traditional Santorini treats

Leave space in the end for a sweet spoon of small tomatoes Jams, garnished with cinnamon and whole almonds. If you are lucky, you will try melletinia, a traditional Easter candy, or sugarplum, a classic wedding treat.

Apart from the traditional desserts, you will also taste “sophisticated” flavours such as tiramisu with roasted eggplant, almond praline and sunflower sauce or kantaifi sauce, with an improbable mizithra mousse. All Divine!

The famous Santorini wines

An excellent food company at the table will keep you the famous Santorini wines. Asyrtiko, Athiri, Aidani, Mandilaria, Mavratragano are just some of the dozens of native varieties that have been popular over the centuries on the island, sinking their roots deep in the volcanic soil.

The Thira vines shaped on terraces to facilitate the cultivation and knitting of the bunch-shaped stump to protect the fruit from the “great” winds and the relentless Cycladic sun, are characteristic elements of the environment.

The peculiarity of Santorini’s soil and microclimate, coupled with the constant effort of local producers to harness their land, yields high yielding wines with a strong structure, cool acidity, intense metallicity and aromatic complexity.

In the picturesque village of Pyrgos you will find the winery of the rural cooperative and there, on its picturesque balcony that looks like it hovers on the Caldera, you will say goodbye to the beautiful sunset with a glass of Vinsanto wine – this sweet diamond of the Santorini vineyard – or a cool Assyrtiko.

Most wineries can be visited on the island. One can take tours of Santorini to visit Santorini’s sightseeings and wineries.

Take a Santorini private tour

Why the wine of Santorini is so special?

The volcano of Santorini has made a unique ecosystem where the vineyards thrive. They are quite small but they cover the biggest part of cultivated soil. Our vineyards can be great place to get your coach that provide variety of modalities of therapies. A part of the vineyards are certified as biological, although practically most of the owner grow theirs using biological methods, due to the natural resistance to parasites and diseases that derives from climate and volcanic environment.

A private tour will help you to find out everything about the relationship between the wine and the volcano.

Santorini’s vineyards

Santorini ‘s Cuckoo (or wreath or vineyard) is unique in the world shaping in vineyards.

Basket-shaped stumps with a very low trunk made with technique and pruning (branch of Santorini).

Inside the baskets are the grapes and they are protected from the sun and especially from the air as the meltemia drifts the fragile surface soil creating many times real sandblasting that can seriously injure them. At the same time, it is close to the ground, enjoying whatever moisture it produces, and this is important because the water in Santorini is scarce.

The wine museum of Santorini

The wine museum of Santorini

The history of wine and the life of Santorinian’s winegrower from 17th to 20th century is presented with a special way at the unique underground Wine Museum of Santorini which is located at the area of Vothona, on the road to Kamari.

The museum is housed at the same spot with the Volcan Wines winery, in a building that combines traditional esthetics and functional infrastructure and it is under the care and supervising of its current owner, George Koutsogiannopoulos.

It is located 6 meters underground and it’s length is 300 meters. Along the way you can find recreations with moving and fixed models, presenting a vivid image of viticulture activity in Santorini, from 1660 to 1970. Furthermore, through an automated personal tour you will be given with clarity all the necessary information regarding the island’s wineries.

What you are going to see at the wine museum;

All the tools, vessels and machinery are authentic and extremely rare, due to the great importance that they had been given with the many years of usage from previous generations of the Koutsogiannopoulos family.

The wine production stages along with all the machinery are exhibited in chronological sequence. The pruning, the land cultivation, the grape harvest, the foot pressing and weighting of grapes. The rare exhibits of wine machines and tools will travel the guest back to time.

Along the length of the underground museum there is a wide variety of photographs and newspaper extracts of older times that refer to Santorini’s winemaking. You can also find old objects, such as tools that were used for constructing barrels and baskets and household vessels.

Some days, a sontorinian festival is organised at the winery’s ceremonial room, which includes a visit at the museum, local wines tasting, food, live music and dances in the island of Santorini.
