The Licence Question, Answered Properly
This is the part rental desks are vague about and the part that costs people money, so here it is plainly. Under Greek law a quad or ATV is classified by engine size. Machines up to 50 cc can be ridden on a category B car licence. Anything above 50 cc requires a motorcycle licence — A1 for up to 125 cc, A2 or A above that — and almost every quad on this island is 125 cc or larger.
For years this was not enforced and half the visitors on the island rode 200 cc machines on a car licence. That changed: police checks are now routine on the Akrotiri and Kamari roads in summer, the fine is substantial, and the machine can be impounded. More importantly, riding without the correct licence voids your rental insurance and, in most cases, your travel insurance too. A minor accident then becomes a bill for the quad, the other vehicle and any medical treatment.
What to do about it. If you hold an A1 or higher, bring the licence itself rather than a photograph, and bring an International Driving Permit if your licence is from outside the EU. If you only hold a car licence, ask specifically for a 50 cc machine and check the engine size on the registration document rather than trusting the counter. 09:00. Collect the machine, do the paperwork properly and check the fuel and the tyres before leaving.
09:30. Akrotiri excavation, roofed and cool, and empty in the first hour.
11:00. The lighthouse road to the end of the island, which is twenty minutes of nothing but volcanic hillside.
12:00. Down to Mesa Pigadia or Vlychada for the white cliffs and a swim.
14:00. Lunch at Vlychada or in Emporio, out of the sun for an hour.
16:00. The inland plain: Emporio’s kasteli, the windmills above it, Megalochori, Pyrgos.

What to Wear on a Santorini ATV Quad Tour

Why the Santorini ATV Quad Tour Became the Island’s Default
Santorini is nineteen kilometres long and about six across at its widest, with a single main road running the spine of it and a web of narrow lanes dropping off either side. Almost all of that road network was laid out for mules and then widened for small trucks; very little of it was designed for two cars to pass each other. Add a hundred thousand rental vehicles arriving every season into villages built in the eighteenth century and the result is the traffic problem the island now has.
