History of Mesa Gonia
During the earthquakes of 1956 the village had a lot of damages, as a result the majority of the people left their houses and went to the neighboring village Kamari in older to continue their lives. The greatest historical monument in Mesa Gonia is the church of Panagias Episkopis.
The church was built in 1100 a.c and it is one of the most important churches in Santorini. The Venetians turned the church into a catholic holy place but during the Ottoman Empire local people turned back to Orthodox. Inside the church you are going to find some excellent carvings and icons from the 11th and 12th century.
