Agios Georgios Santorini: The Quiet End of the Long Beach

Agios Georgios Santorini is the southern end of the island’s longest beach – the same unbroken run of black volcanic sand that starts at Perissa, becomes Perivolos in the middle, and finally empties out here. It is about three kilometres from Emporio and a few minutes past the last beach club. Book with Santorini Tours, a licensed local operator.

Agios Georgios Santorini is where the loungers stop. Walk south along the sand from Perivolos and the umbrellas thin, the music fades and within ten minutes you are on a stretch with nothing on it at all: no shops, no sunbeds, no bars, no showers.

Some people find that a disappointment. Others drive past seven kilometres of organised beach specifically to get here. If you belong to the second group, Agios Georgios Santorini is the best swimming on the south coast.

On the south coast at the far end of the Perissa–Perivolos sand, three kilometres from Emporio, ten minutes from Vlychada, fifteen from the airport, twenty from Fira.

What Agios Georgios Santorini Is Like

The sand at Agios Georgios Santorini. Black and coarse, the same volcanic material as Perissa and Perivolos, with pebbles at the waterline. It holds heat and burns bare feet from mid-morning in summer.

The water. Clear and deep quickly, exactly as along the rest of this coast. Good for confident swimmers, not for paddlers.

The facilities. None to speak of. A handful of rooms to rent behind the beach, and that is it – for anything else you walk or drive back to Perivolos or Perissa.

The shade. None at all. Bring an umbrella or come outside the middle of the day. This is the single practical thing to plan for at Agios Georgios Santorini.

The space. The reason to come. Even in August you can put a towel down with nobody within fifty metres of you, which is not true anywhere else on this coast.

The wind. The south coast takes the meltemi across it rather than head-on, so this end is usually swimmable when the north-facing beaches are not.

The company. A few people staying in the rooms behind, walkers who have come down the sand from Perivolos, and islanders who know exactly why they drove past the beach bars.

Getting to Agios Georgios Santorini

Driving to Agios Georgios Santorini. Twenty minutes from Fira, ten from Emporio, five from Perivolos, ten from Vlychada, fifteen from the airport. There is parking behind the beach and it is free and rarely full.

On foot along the sand. From Perivolos, twenty minutes; from Perissa, an hour. This is the pleasant way to arrive and the character of the beach changes as you walk.

By bus. The Fira–Perissa route serves this coast; from the stop you walk south. Services are frequent in season.

By taxi. Possible, though the island’s licensed fleet is very small and effectively fully booked in August.

Agios Georgios Compared With the Rest of the Beach

Perissa, Perivolos and Agios Georgios Santorini are not three beaches. They are one beach with three names, and choosing between them is most of what you need to know about the south coast.

Perissa – the northern end. Under the mountain, cheapest, youngest, busiest, with the path up to Ancient Thera behind it. More on Perissa.

Perivolos – the middle. The beach club stretch: day beds, cocktails, volleyball courts and the best food on the sand anywhere on Santorini. More on Perivolos.

Agios Georgios Santorini – the southern end. Where all of that stops. No facilities, no crowd, and the most space on the south coast.

Walking it. End to end takes around ninety minutes on the sand, and the character changes completely as you go. It is the best long flat walk on the island.

How to use all three. Base yourself at Perissa or Perivolos for the services, and walk twenty minutes south whenever you want the beach to yourself. Nobody needs to choose.

Against Vlychada. Ten minutes west, and the other quiet option on this coast – carved white ash cliffs, a marina and fish tavernas. Scenery rather than space. More on Vlychada.

Practical Notes for Agios Georgios Santorini

Bring everything to Agios Georgios Santorini. Water, food, shade. There is no shop, no bar and no canteen.

Shoes on the sand. Black volcanic sand burns from mid-morning in high summer.

An umbrella. Not optional in July and August. There is no natural shade at all.

Swimming. Deep water close in and occasional undertow when the sea is up. There is no lifeguard anywhere along this stretch.

Children. Better at Monolithos, where the water is shallow and there are trees.

Parking. Free, behind the beach.

Money. Nothing to spend it on until you walk back north.

Winter. Empty, windy and worth a walk. Nothing is open at Agios Georgios Santorini and nothing is open on the rest of the coast either.

When to Visit Agios Georgios Santorini

April and May at Agios Georgios Santorini. Quiet and pleasant to walk, with the sea cold until late May.

June. The best month. Warm water, and the summer crowds have not yet pushed this far south.

July and August. Hot and exposed. Come early or after five, and bring shade. The compensation is that this stretch stays empty when Perivolos is full.

September. The warmest sea of the year with almost nobody on the sand. The best month at Agios Georgios Santorini.

October. Swimmable in the first half and beautifully quiet.

November to March. Deserted. A good walk on a clear winter day, and nothing else.

Time of day

Morning for the calmest sea, and the last two hours of light for the walk south along the sand.

Is Agios Georgios Santorini Worth It?

If you want a lounger, a cocktail and someone to bring you lunch, no – stop five minutes earlier at Perivolos and have an excellent day.

If what you actually want from a beach is to put a towel on empty sand and swim in clear water without music, then yes, and there is nowhere better on this island that you can reach on a paved road.
