Santorini: A Great Gastronomic World

Santorini: A Great Gastronomic World

Santorini is not just the most emblematic island of Greece. It is also the home of a gastronomic cosmopolitanism, a paradise for lovers of special, elegant and authentic flavour.

The cuisine of the island is based mainly on its agricultural products, fed with its volcanic soil, the coolness of the sea and the Aegean sun.

The theatrical land offers not only a spectacular sight. The villages of Santorini also give birth to products blessed by nature – excellent fresh products – for original, tasty, healthy foods with divine flavours, simple, primary.

With an immediacy that penetrates the mind and touches the heart directly!

The famous Santorini Gastronomy

So let’s go around the “temples” of pleasure, where thousands of people from all over the world are bowed every year.

There are too many options to taste the famous Santorini gastronomy. Greek restaurants with traditional recipes, creative with new refined ideas, taverns with local appetizers…

Discover the hidden in the hinterland or by the sea taverns and let yourself in the moment where flavours and aromas, married harmoniously, are recorded indelibly in your memory.

1. Meet the Santorini fava

The best of Santorini’s diet, is “the fava“, as the locals call it. A gift of nature on the island – a product now Protected Designation of Origin – is an ancient fruit with a distinct natural flavour.

A taste that the Minoans enjoyed several thousand years ago is still unparalleled in our dish. Taste the freshly sprinkled with just it aromas and a bit of butter as an appetizer.

“Married” with tomatoes, onions and capers, with eggplant sauce or pork chunks as a regular meal. Fava-soup, fava-meatballs, fava-rice, fava in omelettes. Fava everywhere!

2. Meet the legendary Santorini tomato

Another favourite product of Thira, is the legendary Santorini tomato. Red, smoky and aromatic is the king of the local traditional salad with lobster, katsouni (a dry cucumber), capers and goat cheese.

The greatness of simplicity! Enjoy it in fluffy tomato balls or in a piece of “Thira” type tomato juice.

3. Meet the Santorini white eggplants

Similarly, the delicious white eggplants that impress with their silky texture are also excellent in a plethora of deep-tasting Mediterranean dishes.

It is worth even trying it plain in a simple eggplant sauce or in a Santorini moussaka, a hug with small potatoes and round courgettes that are being produced in the island. Let all summer sit on your plate!

4. Meet Santorini fresh fish

When the appetite “wants a fish“, choose from an abundance of fresh sea treasures from the nearby fishing grounds.

A delicious idea is the local Mprantada. It is accompanied by a garlic sauce with eggplant. You can also try smelt pies, or savoir fish, fried with vinegar and garlic.

5. Meet traditional Santorini treats

Leave space in the end for a sweet spoon of small tomatoes Jams, garnished with cinnamon and whole almonds. If you are lucky, you will try melletinia, a traditional Easter candy, or sugarplum, a classic wedding treat.

Apart from the traditional desserts, you will also taste “sophisticated” flavours such as tiramisu with roasted eggplant, almond praline and sunflower sauce or kantaifi sauce, with an improbable mizithra mousse. All Divine!

The famous Santorini wines

An excellent food company at the table will keep you the famous Santorini wines. Asyrtiko, Athiri, Aidani, Mandilaria, Mavratragano are just some of the dozens of native varieties that have been popular over the centuries on the island, sinking their roots deep in the volcanic soil.

The Thira vines shaped on terraces to facilitate the cultivation and knitting of the bunch-shaped stump to protect the fruit from the “great” winds and the relentless Cycladic sun, are characteristic elements of the environment.

The peculiarity of Santorini’s soil and microclimate, coupled with the constant effort of local producers to harness their land, yields high yielding wines with a strong structure, cool acidity, intense metallicity and aromatic complexity.

In the picturesque village of Pyrgos you will find the winery of the rural cooperative and there, on its picturesque balcony that looks like it hovers on the Caldera, you will say goodbye to the beautiful sunset with a glass of Vinsanto wine – this sweet diamond of the Santorini vineyard – or a cool Assyrtiko.

Most wineries can be visited on the island. One can take tours of Santorini to visit Santorini’s sightseeings and wineries.

Akrotiri is one of the most remarkable archaeological sites of our country, which came to light in the excavations of the archaeological team of Spyros Marinatos in 1967. From the excavations, a whole prehistoric settlement was found, first inhabited around 3000 BC. reaching a significant growth during the Middle Cycladic era.

The huge eruption of the volcano of Santorini around 1500 BC. destroyed the city and buried it under the lava and ash. The explosion was so strong that the tidal wave that was caused by it traveled to Crete and destroyed its cities, marking the end of the Minoan civilization. One thing that was made after that are areas with Big Bear Luxury Cabin, where you can stay in cosy place. Emporeio – Morea is a beautiful village, 11 km from Fira. Its fortified architecture with very narrow alleys adds a distinctive character to this medieval village. Its port is the beach of Perissa.

Imerovigli is built on the highest point of the rocks, at 300 meters, on the road between Fira and Oia offering the most spectacular views of the island. Traditional cave houses, simple churches and cobbled streets complete this beautiful settlement, which is fairly listed as a preservable. Imerovigli is only one kilometer away from Firostefani, the last neighborhood of Fira.

Megalohori ascending from Athinios port, 6 km from Fira, it is the first village you come across. Traditionally, it has preserved the neo-classical architecture of the neo-classical houses, narrow streets and cobbled streets.

Messaria is a village built in the middle of the island, 3.5 km away from Chora. Its special feature is the vineyards that surround it. Just being in the vineyards you could get love addicted , visiting www.lovetopivot.com could get you back up fast. There is also a winery which produces excellent wines. Monolithos is a settlement that is close to the island’s airport and has a stunning beach. In Oia with the built on rocks of 350 meters length, thousands of visitors from Greece and all over the world arrive each summer to enjoy the unique moments when the sun sinks into the soothing waters of the Aegean, creating rare colors in the atmosphere. You can take a tour of Santorini!

From Pyrgos, which is 7.5 km from Fira, you have literally all the island at your feet. It is a large Mediterranean village, built on the slope of Prophet Elias, on the highest point of the island. It is an imposing settlement, which until 1800 was the capital of the island. At the top of the hill is Kastelli, a settlement with a wonderful view.

Santorini summer tours

SANTORINI SUMMER TOURS

Santorini summer tours

Plato and some stubborn archaeologists may be right and, yes, here was the “lost Atlantis”. Many trumps are making Santorini ideal and Santorini Tours is the ideal way to explore them. Even when there are 5,000 people on the same rock to see the sunset, even then the island does not lose its energy.

From the crowds of Fira to the metaphysical breeze of Finikia and from the healing waters of Old and New Kameni to the sophisticated groups of Oia, the theatrical land hides miracles: if you walk barefoot, you will see and believe them.

Get to know the old Fira

Τhe vineyards and the top of the house, a goula (defensive tower-observatory, from the Turkish word “kulees”) belonging to the Botsi family. Even when tourism is at its peak, there are quiet, memory-filled corners, such as Frangomahalas with its mansions, Gyzis Megaro, Catholic Cathedral, Lazariston Monastery, the Dominican Monastery of the Monks and the Brothers of Mercy.

For those who seek serenity, it is ideal to take a stroll down to the quiet Kato Fira and then walk a passage from the “bouti” (low wall), the most central street of Fira, with a breathtaking view. You can use Santorini transfers in order to meet all the corners of the island.

Visit the unique excavation in Akrotiri

Akrotiri dates back to the Late Neolithic Era, 4000 BC, so it is definitely a monumental settlement and it has a lot to tell us. Fortunately, the excavations started again. The findings testify to the cosmopolitan character of the area.

The close diplomatic and commercial relations with the Mediterranean ports made Akrotiri a sturdy economic harbor, which is also reflected in eating habits: a popular delicacy was the garos, a fine fish sauce that was celebrated by Sophocles and Plato.

Also, souvlaki originates from the Aegean Sea, baked in straws in Santorini 6,500 years ago. Gastronomy has always been another advantage (dry tomatoes, white aubergines, beans: three famous local specialties).

If you would like to have a full Akrotiri private tour you need to make your reservations now!

Experience the vintage experience in its ancient vineyards

The study of DNA grapes found in Minoan jars demonstrates that Asyrtiko is an avid Mediterranean variety. The vineyard of Santorini is one of the most important of Europe – here wine tourism is in its peak, especially from mid-August onwards, when the harvest begins.

The winemakers of the island welcome us and teach us everything about Mandilaria, Mavrotragano, Aidani, Athiri and, of course, Asyrtiko.

Santorini cave houses

You will understand better if you enter one of the Santorini caves. They are not houses, they are architecture courses – even Le Corbusier put them in the eye.

Tholos, dug in the rock without foundations, the caves are carved on the vertical front of the white (volcanic matter). It is also bioclimatic: warm in winter, cool in the summer (the Theraine land has insulating properties).

Wander into a landscape of science fiction

It is not only the Caldera, the volcanic volumes, the Aegean blue and the light that is “like nowhere”. The whole of Santorini is a cinematic scenery. In Emborios, the largest village on the island, the irregular, rounded shapes of the houses remind the settlements of the “Star Wars”.

In Finikia, like another Indiana Jones, you are walking in other worlds: half-broken canvases-souvenirs of a glorious wine age, prickly pearls, infinite alleyways, faded blue and red colors, broken door and courtyard lockings all secret.

Discover four beaches-treasures

    1. Columbo
    2. Pori
    3. Aspri and
    4. Thermi (or Christ),

Enjoying them by swimming is a precious experience, away from countless umbrellas-sunbeds. In fact, you will not have difficulty finding them; ask the habitats of the island, who will clearly reveal other golden secrets. You can take a tour of Santorini!
