The majestic sunsets of Santorini in October 2022

The-majestic-sunsets-of-Santorini-in-October-2022
Visit Santorini in October 2022

Many have read about the spectacular sunsets that occur in Santorini in October and the skeptic may wonder if the sunset can really appear differently there than on the neighboring islands of Naxos or Ios and Anafi.

However, the sunset in Santorini, from the Caldera, really is a magical painting with the volcano as a backdrop.

The colors change from deep red to yellow to orange and purple as the sun sinks into the Aegean and turns golden red reflecting the light on the sea and surrounding islands.

Sights

Ancient Thera

Ancient Thira is located on the top of the South-East peak of Santorini’s highest mountain, Prophet Ilias, just above Kamari. There was the ancient settlement of Thira. There is also a small church from 1100, the area was also used by the Romans as an administrative center.

The road leading to the top starts from the southern end of the bay in Kamari at the foot of the mountain. Those with good energy reserves can walk to the top following the winding road. the climb takes about 45 minutes, but the easiest way is to go up by car or take a minibus that runs from Kamari.

In the parking lot you will find a canteen, benches and a car park. From Ancient Thira there is a stunning view over the east coast of Santorini and the coastal resorts of Kamari and Perissa. If you plan to walk or drive, it’s a good idea to get there before 11am, before many tourists arrive.

Oia and Fira

In Oia you will have the best sunsets, also Oia and Fira are great cities for walking and shopping. In Fira there is a folklore museum, the fortress from the Middle Ages, two Metropolises, one Catholic and one Orthodox.

In the town of Fira you can go to the church of Ag. Mina, which is the church you will see on many postcards of Santorini.

If you go to Fira, in September, there is a famous classical music festival every year. You should also visit the old capital, Pyrgos.

Akrotiri

Akrotiri is an ancient city that was buried underground when the volcano erupted 3,500 years ago.

The buildings are in very good condition and we can say that it is the Pompeii of Greece.

The archaeological site of Akrotiri is one of the best in Greece, you can find it under a canopy and visitors can walk over the ruins on bridges that allow for a better view and photography.

What to do in Santorini in October 2022

There are tennis courts in Kamari and Karterados. In Perissa there is mini golf, a water park, go karts and roller skating. There are volleyball and basketball courts in Fira and Kamari. There are also many places to go cycling.

Many enjoy the two hour or so walk from Imerovigli to Fira, which is a very beautiful experience, but make sure you have water with you, although today the two towns with Firostefani in the middle are almost connected.

There are also possibilities to go horse riding. Nightlife is concentrated in Kamari, Perissa and Fira. Do not forget the famous wineries of the island, where you can visit and taste the local wines of Santorini. If you are driving you will see in many places signs with the words “Wine Roads”.

A good idea is to go on one of the boat tours offered. There are sunset trips in the evenings, and excursions to the volcano and the islands of Palaia Kameni and Thirasia, where there is a small picturesque village. In Fira you can also visit the Archaeological Museum and the Prehistoric Museum where you can see objects from the excavations at Akrotiri, as well as many sculpture objects covering the rich historical past of Santorini, from the prehistoric era to the Neolithic, Minoan, Hellenistic , Roman and Byzantine era. You can take a tour of Santorini!

Food and Restaurants

You can find almost everything in Santorini – from traditional Greek cuisine to international gourmet restaurants. Try the local Visanto wine in the Santorini tours wine tour. In Fira from the Caldera side, there are numerous eateries, restaurants and taverns where you can enjoy all kinds of food from cheap kebabs, gyros and hamburgers to expensive and lavish restaurants. You will find the same number of eateries and restaurants in Oia, Imerovigli and all the other resorts of the island.

Shopping

Santorini is a cosmopolitan island, and the number of luxury yachts and cruise ships that stop here is very high for such a small island, so the prices are somewhat more expensive than other islands.

Many artists live in Santorini, and you can buy very original hand painted items such as umbrellas, ceramics, jewelry, art supplies, etc. You can also buy pictures and pumice stones.

It is worth buying local wine and local fava beans of Santorini, as well as local cheeses and capers. Of course, if you stay in Santorini for a long time and would like to buy daily items and food, there are large supermarkets, mini markets, grocery stores and all kinds of shops.

Have an unforgettable experience in Santorini 2022

Have-an-unforgettable-experience-in-Santorini-2022

Santorini or Thira, is the most famous island in the Aegean Sea and the Cyclades. It is one of the most famous tourist centers in the world, as it is famous for its sunset, the beaches with red and black pebbles, the caldera and its wine. You can discover every corner of Santorini 2022 with Santorini Tours.

Although Oia in Santorini is known for its sunset, it would be good to avoid it at that time as it is usually very crowded. Alternatively if you want to discover this side of the island you can start from the bottom, from the bay to Ammoudi. At the end the rocks end in a small cove from where you can enjoy swimming in the Caldera and go swimming to the church of Agios Nikolaos for diving.

Santorini together with Milos, Methana and Nisyros are still an active volcano and one of the few in the world whose crater is located in the sea. Besides, this island complex was created due to the intense volcanic activity and according to the mythology it emerged from the sea. Here are the main reasons to come to Santorini 2022.

See one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world in Santorini 2022

Santorini is famous around the world for its sunset. Many couples flock to the island in order to enjoy it. There are a lot of people at sunset, but it is definitely worth it. The most famous place that gathers the most people is the Castle of Oia. But for those who are not fans of chatter, there are more secluded places that we recommend so you can enjoy it in peace.

In Pyrgos, which is one of the villages that you should definitely visit due to its incomparable beauty, there is one of the most famous cafe-bars of Santorini and offers wonderful cocktails you can enjoy the sunset from the highest point of the island.

It is an experience that will be unforgettable! Another option is to see the sunset from Akrotiri, which is further away and quieter than Oia. In addition, for a more colorful sunset you can visit the beach of Vlychada, as its volcanic landscape changes colors at sunset. For those who choose the closest destinations, there are Fira, Firostefani and Imerovigli.

Try Santorini wine in a wine tour, one of the most delicious in Greece

Santorini is very popular for its wine, especially for white. The volcanic soil of the island favors the vinification of wines with a special aroma and special personality, which of course are reflected in the taste. Vinsanto offers more than 50 varieties with the best of them.

Other famous varieties that are worth trying are Athiri, Aidani, Mantilaria and Mavrotragano. There are about 13 vineyards that host for a small fee tasting wines and local food flavors that combine perfectly with the wine. Some wineries even function as museums, for the most theoretical and knowledgeable winemakers.  So, enjoy a Santorini wine tour with us and take advantage of the opportunity to taste fine wines while admiring the sunset and the view of the volcano and the caldera.

Have a unique experience exploring Santorini’s villages

The most special and special experience that the island offers is the famous caldera which is the only habitable in the world. Arrange to see the volcano of the island up close. Of course, it is very hot and has a special smell due to the sulfur, but this makes it an even more intense travel experience. You can see parts of the active volcano that have split from the island to emerge at the other end of the Caldera, these are the islands of Palea and Nea Kameni.

Every day from the port of Fira depart boats for the volcano and the neighboring island of Thirasia which are worth boarding as it is a unique experience, to be above an active volcano. You will be as close as possible to the heart of the Atlantis legend. Of course, if you can not stand the heat and the sun, it is better to stay to admire the Caldera from a cafe on the island.

The capital of the island is Fira, which are built on the Caldera, 260 meters above sea level and have a wonderful view of the clear blue waters of the Aegean. Also, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia stretch along the caldera and will enchant you, each in its own unique way. The settlement of Oia is the first in Greece that was judged to be preserved, as it looks like a work of art, which is natural and has no human intervention, since its rocks were sculpted and carved in a unique way from the lava of the volcano.  You can take a tour of Santorini!

In the village of Akrotiri, which is about 10 km from Fira, there is the most important discovery of the Eastern Mediterranean that concerns the prehistoric settlement that was first inhabited in 4500 BC. Pyrgos is a jewel and attraction village for many tourists who seek tranquility and natural beauty. It is 5-10 minutes from Fira and is the most beloved village of the island, as in 1800 it was the capital of Santorini and to this day retains the glamor of the past. The highest peak of the island is located in this village, in the church of Profitis Ilias, from where you can see the most beautiful view of the island and the sunset.

Still, Megalochori seems like a painting with its sculpted rocky houses and incredible tranquility. There are also many wineries that you can visit. You can also visit the windmills on the hill of Gavriilos which, especially at night with shaving, seem extremely romantic.

Santorini is not just a sunset

Santorini-is-not-just-a-sunset

Santorini may be relatively small in size, the information you have, however, is so much that you find it quite difficult to arrange your schedule, so it’s better to trust Santorini Tours. You can find Santorinitours and you can call us on 694 457 7918. A small island in the Cyclades has managed to become world famous and every summer thousands of tourists flock there for its surreal landscape, the abundant view of the Aegean and the sunset.

Of course summer is the season when Santorini knows its great glories as it is flooded with tourists who want to admire the beauty of the island. It is even considered the island of lovers who arrive there to live romantic moments. But what about winter?

Santorini is definitely not like most islands. This is because the season does not end in September or October but continues until November. Basically the winter for most tourist shops is the months of December, January and February.

Winter in Santorini

The island of dreams, as it is called worldwide, is re-established with winter colors, softer rhythms but with the same mysterious charm. Even in the winter months you will find ways to have a good time, eat nice food and find some of the nicest accommodation at lower prices.

Of course, the image that you will see as soon as you reach the most touristic points of the island, that is, all the villages on the Caldera, such as Fira and Oia, has nothing to do with summer.

In the heart of winter you will see closed hotels and restaurants, shops in a row with shutters down and sealed and few tourists and locals. The traffic in winter is transferred to the innermost villages of the island such as Messaria.

There you will find everything open. It is no coincidence that there live locals and professionals who have their businesses in the summer in the tourist places of the island. Life there in winter will remind you more of the daily life of a village than the cosmopolitan Santorini.

Seafood with winter flavor

Santorini is famous for its fava beans and seafood. What is certain is that in winter you will enjoy them better on the one hand because the restaurants are not so crowded to serve on the other hand because the prices are better.

Dare to take a trip to a different, calmer Santorini, but one can only enjoy it from the end of November until March. When the island moves at a slower pace. A Santorini that is now in the top tourist destinations in the world for at least 15 years.

Start from Pyrgos

Pyrgos, in the heart of the island, is a good, alternative choice for accommodation in Santorini, as long as you do not have a dream of a lifetime to sleep and wake up in the Caldera. It is almost equally far from the north and the south, built high – higher than any other settlement of Santorini – it overlooks land and sea may be one of the last villages that were used for tourism.

Indeed, a walk in the old part of the village, which was overtaken and characterized as traditional and preserved, is indicative of the relatively recent turn in tourism. However, it is also extremely interesting, as it passes through narrow cobbled streets with manicured buildings on the left and right, most of them tight-fitted together – this is how the villages with a fortified character on the islands- while all the roads seem to lead to the top.

In Kastelli and even more to the highest point of the village, where the church of the Entrances of the Virgin dominates, while nearby is the Virgin Mary who celebrates the Fifteenth of August and is one of the oldest churches on the island. You can take a tour of Santorini!

Pyrgos is a picturesque village, like the rest, less popular, villages that we visited and that still retain their color and architecture: Megalochori with the most beautiful square of Santorini, Emporio with the highest bell tower on the island of Palia Panagia or Mesaria with the old factories and mansions – some restored and others half-destroyed by the earthquake of ’56, when they were permanently abandoned.

Nice and the cave old houses that we meet here and there; the cave dwellings without foundations, which are narrow and long, carved either in whole or in part in the Thera land and have a vaulted roof.

Definitely you should go in Akrotiri

However, the prehistoric settlement revealed by the archeological dig at Akrotiri was also built with wisdom. It is necessary to visit the covered and well-preserved archeological site, where you will learn everything about the excavations and much more about the fact that the place you visit was first inhabited in the Late Neolithic period, around 4500 BC, while the 18th century BC had developed into a city.

The location was ideal for a safe anchorage, as it was protected from the north winds and the morphology of the soil favored the development of agricultural activities. It is a common secret, after all, that the fava made by Akrotiri and Emporio is the most delicious.

The area of the excavations is close to 14 acres and only a small part of the prehistoric city has been discovered. Other interesting information is that the construction was dense and the buildings were multi-storey with rich murals, organized warehouses, craft spaces, excellent urban planning with streets, squares and a sewer system, which passed under the cobblestones and was directly connected to the houses.

The island of Nea Kameni in the middle of the flooded caldera, is one of the most dangerous volcanoes on the planet. It is also one of the suggested cities as the lost city of Atlantis. The eruption that destroyed most of Santorini 3,600 years ago created a tsunami that reached as far as Turkey and probably wiped out the Minoan Civilization. The Museum of Prehistoric Thira is located in Fira and has findings from prehistoric times that have been excavated from Akrotiri, Ancient Thira and other areas of Santorini.

Beaches in Santorini

The beaches of Santorini are very different from other beaches in Greece due to their special features of the ground. It has black and red volcanic pebbles and hot water.

Food in Santorini

In the traditional cuisine of Santorini we can distinguish the following dishes and products. Fava is an old traditional dish that can be served in many different ways, depending on the season. What makes Santorini Fava special is the taste of the fava beans produced on the island. Dried capers are products of the island that are often used in salads.

The tomato balls are very fragrant and tasty. This delicious Santorini dish is made with herbs, tomatoes and butter and it is suitable for vegans, because it doesn’t contain meat. It really is the special dish of the island, along with the fava. Also. Santorini cheese is a fresh cheese produced by the women of Santorini and it is not easy to find anymore.

Wine tasting in Santorini

Santorini has the best wine in Grrece. According to pivot wine is one of the drinks that can get you to fall in love. Assyrtiko, which is about 80% of the island’s production, is widely cultivated throughout Greece. High acidity and freshness are the characteristics of wines produced with this variety. The white variety Athiri is mainly used for mixing with assyrtiko and produces wine with high alcohol percentage. Aidani, with its intense aroma, is used together with the assyrtiko to give extra flavor to Vinsanto.

Vinsanto is a wine with a rich golden color and excellent flavor, which is achieved thanks to the many years of maturation and aging with the bottle and the ripe and dried from the sun white grapes from which it is made. Mavrotragano is a red variety that is native to the Cyclades, while it is rich in phenols.

Fun activities for you and your friends

In addition to museums, galleries and cultural events, Fira is the commercial center of the island while offering endless options in food, nightlife and entertainment. Fira is also the center of the island’s nightlife, with many bars and clubs, for endless fun over the volcano. And of course there is a huge selection of restaurants and taverns where you can enjoy your dinner accompanied by the wonderful local wine, Vinsanto. You can take a tour of Santorini!

Most of the bars and nightclubs of Santorini are located in the capital of the island, Fira and in the most beautiful area of the island, Oia. Also, there are many clubs and pubs in Kamari and Perissa.
