9 things you should do in Santorini in August

9 things you should do in Santorini

9 things you should do in Santorini in August

The beautiful and glamorous Santorini invites you for another summer to explore it and experience a unique vacation combining a ride with donkeys, a visit to a volcano and a cable car. Book a Santorini Tour with us in August and have the time of your life!

1. Walk in the famous and picturesque Fira

The cosmopolitan Fira, the capital of the island, retains its interesting architecture and is one of the busiest places on the island. From the port you will go up 4-5 turns and you will be in the neighborhoods of Fira.

The village as it is located in an advantageous position above the caldera has experienced great tourist development. You will see the popular caves that were the residences of the poorest inhabitants of the island, but also the impressive public buildings and urban houses of the 18th and 19th century. It is worth approaching Theotokopoulou Square with its cafes and luxury shops. Look for different places from where you will enjoy the view of the chaotic cliff and the volcanic islands.

One of them is the orthodox cathedral of the Diocese. Visit the Archaeological Museum of Thira, the cultural center “Belloneio Foundation” and the Venetian Palace of Gyzi with its magnificent copperplates. In the upper Fira you will tour Frangomachalas with its well-preserved mansions and in Kato Fira, the church of Ag. Mina and the church of Christ. From here the cable car will take you down comfortably to the port of Gialos.

2. Walk in the famous Imerovigli

Imerovigli occupies the most privileged position and has the most breathtaking view of the caldera and Thirasia. It is famous for the luxurious hotels that offer their guests a natural balcony in the caldera, a calm atmosphere and a super relaxing landscape. You can have a Santorini Private Personalized Tour with Santorini Tours and experience the beauty of Santorini.

3. See rare finds in the museums of the island

A visit to the museum of Prehistoric Thira and the archeological site is like a dive into the long history of the island. The first houses finds from excavations in Akrotiri, such as furniture molds, bronze utensils and the only golden chamois figurine.

The Archaeological Museum houses collections of sculptures and inscriptions from the Archaic to the Roman period. Excavations have revealed parts of an advanced settlement of the 3rd millennium BC that was buried in the ashes of the great eruption of the volcano (15th century BC). It is considered one of the most important prehistoric centers of the Aegean and the Mediterranean.

4. Go to Pyrgos, the old capital

South of Fira you will find the village of Pyrgos which used to be (until 1800) the capital of the island. The settlement is located at the foot of Prof. Elias which is the highest mountain of Santorini.

In the center of the village dominates the medieval castle that is kept in good condition. There are picturesque taverns and beautiful cafes. Visit the monastery of Profitis Ilias or follow the path to the top of the mountain.

5. Visit Emporio and the nearby beaches

The village of Emporio is located in the southern part of Santorini and in the past was the commercial center of the island, as until a few years ago were located most of the shops.

Its medieval castle (Goulas) is well preserved. You will tour the labyrinthine medieval cobbled streets where in some cases only one person can fit. You will see the church of Evangelistria or Panagia Messiani (16th century) and the restored medieval buildings. You can take a tour of Santorini!

6. Plan a tour to the Volcano and the surrounding settlements

Prefer packages that include a visit to the Volcano, the Hot Springs and spend some time in Thirasia to discover the settlements of Potamos and Manolas, which are not touristically developed, and to swim in Korfos (old port), where you can enjoy a meal. However, the experience of seeing Santorini at sea is something you should not miss for any reason.

7. Opt for extreme sports

Only a diving enthusiast can understand the uniqueness of the experience of becoming part of this wonderful aquatic world. In Santorini you will feel this many times over, since at the same time there is the peculiarity of the seabed: the volcanic rocks and the awe from the bottom of the caldera.

8. Visit Red Beach, the wonder of nature

Santorini has good beaches such as Kamari sandy beach on the east side of the island, the famous Perissa with fine black sand, the busy beach of Monolithos near the airport, Columbus, Vlychada and many more. However, Red beach is considered the beast beach in Santorini.

This unique beach takes its name from the vertical reddish rocks that stand around next to the deep pelagic waters composing a landscape, almost unreal. It is approached from the great archeological site of Akrotiri where in the parking lot you will leave your vehicle and continue on a downhill path for 5 minutes to the sea. Of course you can also come by excursion boat from Akrotiri.

Be prepared for lots of people, especially in August.  There are canteens, while part of the sea shore is occupied by umbrella loungers. It has a southern orientation and consequently the meltemi does not catch it. In any case, despite any inconvenience, if you choose Santorini this summer, know that swimming on the Red Beach is one of the best thinks you can do in the island.

9. Santorini is an excellent gastronomic destination

Santorini is probably the most gastronomic island of the Aegean with a series of excellent local products but also restaurants that highlight and give another dimension to the products and the Greek cuisine. So your experience on the island will be complete only by tasting the cuisine of some of the distinguished and award-winning chefs of the island, who passionately cook and give soul to local products. You can enjoy a Santorini Private Tour and Food Experience as well as a Santorini Wine Tour with us.

Enjoy a wine tour in Santorini in 2021

Undoubtedly Santorini is recognized as one of the best and most famous travel destinations in the world. In addition to its wild beauty, it is especially known for the excellent wines it produces which you can enjoy in a Santorini wine tour with Santorini Tours. The volcanic soil it has gives its wines a rare, almost unique character.

In Santorini are cultivated only indigenous varieties such as Assyrtiko, Aidani, Athiri, Mandilaria and Mavrotragano. The latter was a forgotten, insignificant variety scattered on the island in very small quantities. At the beginning of 2000 it started to gain the interest of the producers again, as a result of which today some of the best Greek red wines are produced from Mavrotragano.

However, the most famous variety of Santorini is Assyrtiko, which shows its best face on the island. Santorini wines have strong personality, rich body and sharp acidity. This uniqueness has made Santorini wines famous, giving them a place in the best wine lists around the world. The small quantity, the unique character, the expensive land and the global recognition have also contributed to the vertical increase of prices. The price of most wines increased by about 30-40% within 1 year. Many considered this increase absurd, but let us not forget that we are talking about unique premium wines that should take the place and also the price they deserve.

The island of Santorini has a special tradition in the production of wine from its birth about 3,500 years ago. Wine goes hand in hand with the evolution of civilization from its depths yesterday until today. The main reason for the exceptional and unique wine production in the world is the volcano. The volcanic site created the conditions: rich volcanic soil in lava and ash, volcanic material in the subsoil, specific climatic conditions and dry land due to limited rainfall, sea and sun.

The vineyard, an integral part of Santorini culture, is everywhere. The vineyards of the island are one of the oldest in Europe and a special way of pruning in the shape of a bun is used, which protects the vine from the wind. You will find old traditional wineries all over the island but the houses also have their own place dedicated to wine. The wineries keep the traditional method of winemaking until today, aiming at quality, custodians of the secret, divine taste that the volcano gave to the Santorini. Get to know the wines of Santorini with a Santorini private wine tour.

Which wine should I try in a Santorini wine tour?

The most famous labels of Santorini are Nykteri, dry, white aged wine of the Assyrtiko variety and the delicious, intoxicating Vinsanto with the intense sweet taste. The unique taste and aroma of Santorini wines brought them to the forefront of the international wine tasting community, winning outstanding reviews around the world. Santorini may be known all over the world for its sunset and view of the Caldera.

But connoisseurs know that Santorini, with its valuable heritage and tradition of 3,500 years in viticulture, is also famous for the quality and unsurpassed taste of its wines. The strength of the volcanic land of Santorini, in combination with the excellent climate of the island, favored the creation of unique varieties with strong aromas and flavors. And when professional winemakers came into play with a love for the place and a passion for their work, the fame of Santorini wines skyrocketed both in Greece and abroad.

Although there are several varieties, the most famous is Assyrtiko, a wine with an explosive body, which matches the volcanic character of the island. It is the largest part of the wine production of the island and one of its most important and recognizable exportable products.

There are two wines that we especially love. One is Nychteri, a white dry wine of the Assyrtiko variety, with aromas of flowers and citrus. The people who produced this wine worked in the cellars until late at night to squeeze the grapes, thus giving the wine its name. The second is Vinsanto, the famous red sweet wine of Santorini that is served more as a liqueur. The growers traditionally spread the grapes in the sun for two weeks to raise the sugars, which gives the wine its sweet taste. Its name is said to have come from Vin Santo which means Holy Wine.

In a Santorini wine tour you should try Assyrtiko in all its versions, fresh and aged as each vineyard reflects its uniqueness but also each winemaking is unique. There are excellent varieties of wine you can taste in a Santorini  wine tour such us Athiri, Aidani, Mavrotragano but also the lesser known Mandilaria, Voudomato, Katsano.

What to accompany them with?

With the genuine local products, fava, capers, barley, cherry tomatoes, the recipes that are based on them, but also tomato meatballs, sponge, stuffed (either with zucchini flowers or cherry tomatoes).

With Santorini Tours you can visit all the wineries of Santorini. You can take a tour of Santorini!

You can taste the famous Santorini wines with a tour by Santorini Tours. For many years, the main – and most expensive – “product” of Santorini was the caldera. But the verdict came from the market itself. The island was suffocatingly full and the vineyards gave it a different air and perspective. When investing in quality, gastronomy plays a leading role. In this context, Santorini began to tell us its story through aromas of wines with the power of volcanic soil and the character of a variety that thrives on an island hit by the winds.

At the same time, great winemakers arrived on the island and became seriously involved in viticulture and winemaking. Santorini wines are one of the most popular in Greece and with remarkable sales abroad, while everything shows that we are still at the beginning.

If you consider that Santorini is the first wine tourist destination in Greece with so many organized and visitable wineries, good restaurants and a whole network that moves around them with tastings, etc., the future is auspicious. Seize the opportunity to see the caldera and to taste Santorini wines and products by booking a Santorini Wine Tour.

The four famous Santorini wines

Assyrtiko

A variety with a special character – you either love it or you hate it. In the microclimate of Santorini gives a wine with minerals, high acidity and exuberant body, which matches the volcanic character of the island itself. It is the basic Thera variety (corresponds to about 80% of grape production) and is the basis of OPAP Santorini wine production. Assyrtiko is one of the most important white varieties and is one of the strongest papers of the Greek vineyard for a possible career abroad. Try Thalassitis Vareli and Santorini of Sigalas (with or without aging in barrel, respectively) to find out how Assyrtiko is ideally expressed.

Nykteri

The white, dry, high grade (can not be below 13.5%), traditional aged wine of Santorini from Assyrtiko. It was named so because the vine growers harvested the grapes in the morning and processed them on the same day, so that they were pressed until late at night and the whole processing was done at night, when the temperatures are lower. Another version is that due to the heat, they started picking grapes almost at night. It is served cool and accompanies grilled fish and traditional dishes of the island (tomato meatballs, fava beans, etc.). The exuberant Night of the Cooperative (SANTO) is ideal to discover the charm of this particular wine. You can book a private wine tour or a private tour and food experience with us!

Vinsanto

It is the pride of the island, the traditional sun-dried wine OPAP Santorini with its honey color, golden highlights and special aroma, with a concentrated taste of ripe figs, raisins, plums, etc. In 1853 Lois Lacroix wrote of it: “No sweet wine can compare with the white Santorini Vinsanto.” It is made from sun-dried grapes that are spread out in the sun for one to two weeks. The older it gets, the more balanced its sweet elements are and the better it becomes – proof of the extremely aged Vinsanto of Silver and also the Vinsanto of Sigalas.

Mavrotragano

We would say that it is the current trend of Santorini. Although the island was never famous for its red wines, Mavrotragano seems to be starting a new era. This is a grape with small and very tasty rogues, many tannins and a special taste. We could say that it has the aromas of Pinot Noir and the taste of Cabernet. Because it has strong tannins, it needs aging to soften. Paris Sigalas insists on this variety because it exists only in Santorini. Thus, his own Mavrotragano is the best version we can try.

Book a wine tour in Santorini

The wineries of Santorini can be visited and include tours of the vineyards, facilities and underground cellars. Santorini stands out as one of the most important areas with products of Designation of Origin in Greece, thanks to the variety and quality of the wines it produces. In Santorini is the oldest vineyard in the world, which dates back to prehistoric times and has an area of 12,000 acres. The method of pruning is called ‘bun’ because of the shape of the basket given to the vines in order to protect the fruit from strong winds.

The most famous Santorini wines are Nykteri, white dry wine based on the Assyrtiko variety, Vinsato, white or red sweet wine, which was also the wine of the Holy Communion in the Russian Orthodox Church and Brusco, which dates back to the time. of Latin rule and has high acidity, which is due to its rough taste.

Santorini wines are characterized by strong aromas and flavors and high alcohol levels. Santorini has a long tradition in viticulture, at least 3500 years. Santorini’s unique climate in combination with the composition of the soil have made the varieties that are vinified to give wines with a special personality. You can take a tour of Santorini!
