Santorini cable car: the height. Fira sits around 220 metres above the sea, and the Santorini cable car climbs that whole cliff in a single stretch.

Santorini cable car: children. €5 for children aged 6 to 12; children under six travel free.
Santorini cable car: luggage. €5 per large suitcase, which matters if you are arriving by sea with bags.
Reduced fares. A €5 fare also applies to licensed tour guides, travel agents, cruise ship crew and persons with disabilities.
Santorini cable car: summer hours. From June to August the service runs roughly 06:30 to 23:00, with the last departure from the top station at 22:40.
Santorini cable car: shoulder season. In May, September and October it runs roughly 06:30 to 22:00. April closes around 21:00.
Winter. From November to March the Santorini cable car runs in split periods, typically morning and afternoon, so check the timetable before walking down to the port.
Late ships. Hours are often extended when a cruise ship leaves late, so passengers are not stranded at the bottom.
Santorini cable car e-tickets. Tickets can be bought in advance on the official e-ticketing platform. An e-ticket lets you skip the payment window and go straight to the boarding line. You may still queue to board, but that line moves faster than the one that also has to pay.
So, Can You Skip the Santorini Cable Car?
Yes, you can, and many visitors do. Whether you should depends on who you are, when you travel and which direction you are going. This is how we advise guests.
Skip it going down. Walking down the steps is far easier than walking up. If you have the time and good shoes, descending on foot and saving the Santorini cable car for the climb back is a sensible split.
Ride it going up in summer. The path faces the afternoon sun and offers little shade. In July and August the climb is hot and tiring, and the Santorini cable car is the safer choice for most people.
Skip it if you are fit and it is cool. Early morning, spring and late autumn make the walk up pleasant for reasonably fit walkers. Allow between one hour and an hour and a half, with stops.
Ride it with young children or limited mobility. The steps are uneven, shared with mules and slippery in places. The Santorini cable car is the practical answer for families with small children and anyone with knee, hip or heart concerns.
Ride it if your time is short. A cruise stop leaves only a few hours ashore. Spending an hour of them on the climb makes sense only if the walk itself is what you came for.
Skip the mule. We do not recommend riding the mules. The walk and the Santorini cable car are both better choices, for you and for the animals.
Skip the port altogether. If you are staying on the island rather than arriving by sea, you never need the Santorini cable car at all. The Old Port is worth a visit, but Fira and the caldera views are reached by road.
Our view. Walk down if you want the experience, and use the Santorini cable car to come back up. It is the best balance of effort, time and views.

Most of the pressure on the Santorini cable car comes from cruise ships. Large ships anchor in the caldera and tender their passengers to the Old Port, and on busy days thousands of people arrive within a couple of hours.
Santorini cable car: morning arrivals. The longest queues at the bottom station form as the first tenders land. If you arrive early, go straight to the line or buy an e-ticket in advance.
Santorini cable car: the afternoon return. The worst queue of the day is often at the top station in the afternoon, when passengers from several ships head back to the port at the same time. Leave Fira earlier than you think you need to.
Check the cruise calendar. Ship schedules are published in advance. On days with several large vessels, plan your time in Fira around the busiest windows.
Ship tours. Some cruise lines tender guests to Athinios, the island’s main commercial port, for organised coach excursions instead of the Old Port. In that case you do not use the Santorini cable car at all.
Walking down as a plan B. If the top queue looks too long and you are running close to your last tender, walking down the steps is usually faster than waiting. Allow at least 30 to 40 minutes and watch your footing.

Santorini cable car: suitcases. Large bags pay a separate €5 fare. If you are arriving by ferry at Athinios, you will not use the cable car with your luggage, because ferries do not dock at the Old Port.
Fear of heights. The cabins are enclosed and the ride is short. Most nervous passengers find it manageable, especially facing uphill towards the cliff rather than out to sea.
Heat. Queues at the bottom station can stand in full sun. Carry water and a hat on summer cruise days.
The steps instead. The path is not suitable for wheelchairs, strollers or wheeled luggage. For all three, the Santorini cable car is the only practical way between the port and Fira.
