You can’t help falling in love with Santorini in 2023

You-cant-help-falling-in-love-with-Santorini-in-2023
Fall in love with Santorini in 2023

Special, romantic, unique. No matter how many adjectives you put next to the island of Santorini, they are not enough to describe it to the absolute extent. Full of contrasts, but also with an unparalleled style, it welcomes millions of visitors from all over the world every summer. See why you can’t help falling in love with Santorini in 2023.

What not to miss in Santorini in 2023

The sunset in Oia

Did we say that Santorini is not only about the sunset, but how can you go there and not enjoy it at least once? It can not be done! Even if you are not among the romantics of this world, it is impossible not to be seduced by this mysterious force that almost hypnotizes the crowd in the alleys of Oia, when the clock approaches sunset time. Then, a huge demonstration with hats, cameras and the smell of sunscreen moves to the edge of Oia at the Kastelli of Agios Georgios, where you just stare with your mouth open as the sun dips into the Caldera and the people applaud it. If you are looking for a similar spectacle with fewer spectators, other amazing spots on the island to watch the sun set are the peak of the prophet Ilias, the height of ancient Thira, the Lighthouse, the castle of Pyrgos and the beach of Vlyhada.

The evenings in Fira

The day belongs to the beaches, the sunset time belongs to Oia, and the evening rightfully belongs to Fira, the lively capital of the island that not only has beautiful cave houses on the side of the Caldera, but also a multitude of bars, restaurants, taverns, fast food and squares, which “buzz” pleasantly all night long.

Firostefani

You can reach Firostefani from Fira, following the eyebrow of the caldera and covering a distance of about 10 minutes on foot. Firostefani, which has always been the favorite stop of every visitor to the island, owes its name to the fact that it crowns Fira.

The view of the caldera is simply unbeatable, with the cliff so steep that many times your heart will beat faster. In Firostefani you will find several worthwhile suggestions for food, in restaurants and taverns whose main characteristic is the relaxing atmosphere. You can take a tour of Santorini!

Imerovigli

Undoubtedly, Imerovigli occupies the most privileged position and has the most breathtaking view of the caldera and Thirasia. It is famous for the most luxurious hotels that offer their guests a natural balcony on the caldera, calm atmosphere and super relaxing scenery.

The volcano

Parts of the active volcano of Santorini, the islets of Palaia and Nea Kameni that emerge on the other side of the Caldera, remind us that they were once part of the same island, which was then called Strongili because of its shape. Every day from the small port of Fira, boats depart for the volcano and the neighboring island of Thirasia, which are worth boarding if you are fascinated by the idea of being on top of a volcano.

Do not expect picturesque landscapes, but wild hills that you will have to climb under the hot sun. And yet, it is worth it, as you will find yourself as close as possible to the heart of the legend of Atlantis, signs of which are the smoke and hot air in the small openings of Kammeni from where the volcano breathes.

Note that the mini excursion is not suitable for those who cannot stand long exposure to the sun or climbing. Also note that on the way back you will also pass by the point of the hot springs, where the water turns red and hot, to the small cove of an island that has only one inhabitant: the mysterious man with a weakness for the color red, who does not you are unlikely to find him meditating on the shore!

Emporio

During the Venetian rule it was the commercial and financial center of Santorini. Today it is one of the most interesting villages of the island, especially from an architectural point of view. Emporio is located in the southern part of Thira, very close to Perivolo and Perissa beaches. Here you will be impressed by the characteristic, stone-hewn houses. You will be enchanted by the exploration of the Castle, while you will feel intense immersion in Panagia Kali, located inside the castle.

The summer cinema in Kamari

It has been voted one of the ten most beautiful summer cinemas on the planet and not without reason, as it is located on the beach promenade of the Kamari coast and is still an oasis of coolness and nostalgia with comfortable director’s chairs, a bar with stools to watch the film sipping your drink and green background that accompanies the movies.

Akrotiri

It is the greatest archaeological discovery of the Eastern Mediterranean. Akrotiri is a picturesque village in the southwestern part of the island, at a distance of about 10 km from Fira. The most important attraction in Akrotiri is the prehistoric settlement, which was first inhabited around 4500 BC. and came to light after the systematic excavations that began in 1967.

Now the visited archaeological site has been upgraded and has acquired a new bioclimatic shelter, attracting thousands of visitors. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit one of the most important “historical relics” of Greece (and not only Santorini), walking in a city of yesterday that remains alive.

The wine

The special soil and climate of Santorini was fertile ground for the Cycladic winegrowers, who endowed the island with a heavy tradition in winemaking. White Assyrtiko is the “ruler” of production, while Athiri and Aidani follow. The famous local wine Vinsanto is an experience for the taste buds in itself – you can try it in the small local canavas (traditional wineries) or in larger establishments. Of course, you will find local wine in every restaurant on the island.

Santorini is an all year round destination for 2023

Visit Santorini in 2023

Santorini is one of the most beautiful islands in the world and rightly characterized by many as the diamond of the Aegean. You may explore Santorini with Santorini tours.

The geological specificity of Santorini is unique and breathtaking. Its rich history and cultural heritage attract crowds from all over the world.

Santorini is one of the most important tourist destinations, not only in Greece but also in Europe.

Santorini is located in the South Aegean Sea, north of Crete, and is the southernmost island in the Cyclades.

The island

Santorini is the southernmost island of the Cyclades and is located between Ios and Anafi. Its area is 76 sq.km. and the length of its coasts 69 km. The perimeter is about 36 nautical miles. It is 128 nautical miles from the port of Piraeus and 63 nautical miles from Crete.

The volcano

It is a complex of the islands of Thira, Thirasia, Aspronisi and the volcano (Old Kameni and Nea Kameni, in which the crater of the volcano is located). It is included together with Methana, Nisyros and Milos among the active volcanoes of Greece.

The history of Santorini

The name Thira was taken from the mythical settler Thera of Sparta, who settled on the island around the 10th century BC. and founded the homonymous city in Mesa Vounos.

The name Santorini was given to the complex of islands by the Venetians and is mentioned by the Arab geographer Edrisis, in 1153. It is a portmanteau of the words Santa Irene, which he got either from the church of the same name on the plain of Thirasia, or from the church of the same name early Christian basilica in Perissa, which is not preserved.

Thira, Thirasia and Aspronisi are remains of the prehistoric round island. They surround a deep basin-shaped sea basin, in the center of which Palia and Nea Kameni emerged. This basin is called Caldera or Caldera, according to international geological terminology. It has dimensions of 8X5 km and a depth that reaches 370 m.

Santorini as a destination for 2023

Santorini is the only island complex in which the settlements are not built at sea level, but on the edges of the inner walls of the Caldera. It is also one of the few places in the world where architectural ensembles of cave houses in the volcanic terrain are preserved. The Caldera and the entire complex of the islands of Santorini have been designated as of special natural beauty.

The main island, Thira, has a crescent shape and is located in the easternmost position of the complex. Its western side is made up of the walls of the Caldera that keep alive the image of its geological history and capture the different phases of volcanic activity. There are 13 villages in Thira and 3 in Thirasia. The capital of the island is Fira, a name that came from a corruption of the word Thira and has prevailed.

From the 1980s until today, thousands of couples from all over the world choose Santorini to get married, or to spend their honeymoon. It is estimated that every year the ceremonies exceed 500. Orthodox weddings are usually held in churches overlooking the Caldera such as the Cathedral of Fira, Agios Minas, the Church of the Resurrection in Imerovigli, Agios Georgios and Panagia Platsani of Oia. Catholics choose the Cathedral of Fira.

Known for its romantic sunsets, picturesque scenery and Cycladic Architecture, Santorini is the perfect destination for travelers and tourists who want to live an unforgettable experience!  You can take a tour of Santorini!

Fira

The capital of Santorini, Fira, located in the center of the island, dominates the Caldera opposite the volcano. The view is breathtaking and the sunset here is famous all over the world.

In the picturesque cobbled streets of the city, visitors have the opportunity to wander and admire the huge variety of souvenirs, clothes, handmade carpets and textiles that hang elegantly in the shop windows.

A prominent place in the market of Thira is occupied by the “road of gold”. Elaborate jewelry made of gold, silver and other precious metals adorned with precious gems in unique designs inspired by Greek history emits enticing sparkles to would-be buyers. The gold market, perhaps the largest in Europe, is a living part of Thira. Visitors from all over the world invest here in “golden memories”.

Around the central square of Thira and at a distance of a few meters, there are the Police Station, the Port Authority, the Hospital, Pharmacies, Post Office, Public Services, Banks, Tourist Offices, all willing to make your holidays unforgettable. Here is also the central Bus and Taxi Station that will take you to all the villages of the island, the beaches, the port and the airport.

Museum of Prehistoric Thera

It was inaugurated in 2000 and you will see the mobile finds from the excavations at the Archaeological Site of Akrotiri, such as the original wall paintings, but also finds from excavations in other places of the island. You will find it behind the Metropolis of Ypapanti. The Archaeological Museum of Thira remains closed as the New Museum is under construction.

Why should you come to Santorini in 2023?

Why-should-you-come-to-Santorini in-2023
Visit Santorini in 2023

Visit Santorini in 2023 and take a tour with Santorini Tours. The island is mainly known for its enchanting sunset and volcano, but it has more than that. The white houses with the blue roofs that are built on the edge of the cliff, create an extraordinary image that can amaze even the most demanding visitor.

The volcanic island of the Aegean

Santorini is an island in the Aegean Sea and belongs to the Cyclades. It is a highly touristic island due to its traditional architecture and Instagrammable scenery.

Whatever type of traveler you are, Santorini has a lot to offer. If you are a history buff then you must visit ancient Thira or the prehistoric archaeological site at Akrotiri. If you like good food, here you will definitely find many options of local and traditional flavors, as well as a huge variety of wines from local producers to accompany them. Finally, if what you are looking for is nightlife, then Santorini is the ideal island for you.

The volcano of thera

The caldera of the volcano is probably the most famous attraction of the island. It was created by many volcanic eruptions, the most famous being the Minoan one in the 17th century BC. In the center of the caldera you will find two small islands, Palia and Nea Kameni. Access to Nea Kameni is by boat that operates daily. There you can walk for 20 minutes on stabilized lava and reach the crater at the top of the island. Or take a dip in the exotic orange waters, created by the hot springs.

Where to stay in Santorini in 2023?

Santorini is divided into two parts, the Western and the Eastern.

Western section of the island

The busiest part of the island is the western part because that is where the caldera, Thira and Oia are located. Most of the hotels located at this point have amazing views of the caldera, the sea and the sunset. But there are also negatives. To begin with the prices are very high, the majority of hotels have a lot of stairs and many of them do not accept children under 13 years old. Finally, it is good to know that not all hotels on the west side have a view, as some of them are located inside the settlements.

Eastern part of the island

On the other hand, the Eastern side is more similar to the rest of the Cyclades. Here you will find seaside hotels that attract many young people and families. These hotels usually offer larger and cheaper rooms than those on the west side.

The best beaches of Santorini in 2023

In Santorini, due to the volcanic eruption, you will find unique beaches. I’ve collected my favorites below, but that doesn’t mean the others aren’t good.

Red beach

The Red Beach is one of the most famous beaches of the island and is located in its southern part. Access to it is easy and can be done either on foot or by boat from Akrotiri. Also, it is good to know that the beach is organized.

Perivolos

Another famous beach of the island with black sand is Perivolos. It is the largest beach in terms of area and satisfies every type of visitor. Here you can find many beach bars, cafes and taverns, but also quiet corners to rest.

Vlychada

Vlychada is also a beautiful beach of the island, in its southeastern part. Most of it is organized, however you can find enough space to enjoy your bath in peace. You should know, however, that there is no cell phone signal on this beach.

White beach

White Beach is the one that makes the difference. As its name suggests, it is made up of white rocks that create a strong contrast with the black sand and all together create an idyllic landscape. To get to Aspri beach you have to take the boat from Akrotiri and be prepared that you won’t find any taverns, canteens or bars here.

What should you eat in Santorini in 2023?

It is impossible to be on the island and not try its local and traditional flavors. You can take a tour of Santorini!

Local wine

Among other things, Santorini is known for its wines. Here you can find wineries to visit that will introduce you to the flavors and aromas of the wines produced in the volcanic vineyards. Do not miss to try the famous Vincento, the local variety of the island.

Fava

You can’t come this far and not try Santorini’s famous fava. This local legume dominates many dishes but also in its simple form.

Tomato balls

The locals are very proud of their tomato meatballs, and not without reason. Santorini tomato meatballs are made from local, pure products and give you a taste that you won’t need anything else.

Santorini salad

With a Santorini salad you will taste almost all the famous products of the island. Its basis is the Santorini cherry and it has capers, nuts and chlorotyri.

Fall in love with Santorini this September

Fall-in-love-with-Santorini-this-September
Visit Santorini in September 2022

September in Santorini is the favorite time not only of locals, but also of eclectic vacationers. The hot summer is over, the sea is warmer than ever and the sky is blue all day, while the afternoons are cool. September sunsets paint Oia gold and the deep blue of the Caldera becomes more intense these days.

September is the right month to visit the island. Take a walk to the shops, enjoy your coffee in a cafe-bar with a view of the magical sunset or your food in a luxurious restaurant.

If you are in a romantic mood, all you have to do is visit the preserved settlement of Imerovigli. Here you will see the ruins of the Venetian castle of Skaros and you will walk on the path that leads to the small church of Theoskepasti, built on the edge of a rock, with a unique view of the volcanic islands of Palia and Nea Kameni.

You can enjoy your coffee combined with the fantastic view that the island offers. In the famous Oia, beloved by tourists, you can enjoy the sweetest and most romantic sunset of September with your loved one by your side, you can take advantage of the atmosphere for a marriage proposal. In this setting, we don’t think they will refuse you.

Fira in September

Built 260 meters above sea level, Fira (Santorini’s capital), dressed in typical Cycladic colors, looks like it has perched on the edge of a cliff. The blinding white of the houses in combination with the volcanic vertical rocks that emerge from the seabed evoke the admiration of those who see Santorini from the sea for the first time. As for the view from the settlement towards Nea and Palia Kameni, what can one say? The privileged position of Fira in the Caldera lends itself to endless hours of relaxation.

Oia in September

The most photographed preserved settlement of Santorini, famous around the world for the enchanting sunset at the Castle. Oia with its picturesque alleys, impressive captain’s houses and many churches with painted domes will steal your heart. It is about 40 minutes from Fira by car. It is considered more quiet than the bustling Fira with its intense nightlife and an ideal destination for romantic escapes from everyday life! Here you will find very good restaurants and an interesting market for art, antiques and ethnic items.

If you plan to visit Santorini in spring or autumn, dare to get to know it on foot. Wear comfortable shoes and follow the old path that joins its settlements on the rim of the Caldera. The images you will see will reward you for any fatigue you may feel in your body. From Fira to Firostefani and Imerovigli and from there continue to Oia just before sunset. You won’t regret it.

Sunset in Santorini in September

If you don’t experience it up close, you cannot understand why it has come to be considered an attraction of the island. And while the sunset in Oia is one of the most famous, the truth is that wherever you enjoy it, just being in Santorini and getting lost in the colors of the sunset is enough in itself.

In Fira you can enjoy this magical time of day on the roof of a bar on the eyebrow of the caldera while drinking a cocktail. In Oia, the golden hour lovers run to the ruins of the castle to capture the moments on their cameras. In Imerovigli, the terraces of the luxury hotels offer the ideal combination of relaxation and enjoyment away from the crowds.

In the summer months, Santorini is flooded with crowds. If you want to avoid the hordes of tourists rushing to get a seat for the natural spectacle that has made it famous in the world, we have the solution for you. Two more wonderful spots to enjoy the sunset on the Aegean horizon are from Skaros of Imerovigli or from the lighthouse of Akrotiri. You can take a tour of Santorini!

The beaches of Santorini in September

Black beach, red beach, organized beaches or secluded bays, with sand, pebbles or shores surrounded by steep, white cliffs. One thing is certain. The beaches of Santorini have a special, wild beauty.

At Red Beach with its imposing red and black rocks (the result of volcanic activity) you will swim in dark blue crystal waters with underwater hot springs and sunbathe on red sand, alternating with black pebbles. Continuing to Aspri Paralia you will enjoy your swim with a view of the impressive white rocks that surround it.

Choose the organized beach of Perissa and lie on very fine black pebbles. You will find a similar landscape, but without the same infrastructure with fine black sand and dark pebbles on the beach of Vlychada. In Perivolos and Kamari you will find the most popular beach bars of Santorini, while in Ammoudi (port of Oia) after your dives you will eat fresh fish in the fish taverns operating by the sea.
