How-to-spend-2 days-in-Santorini-in-September-2023

Santorini is undoubtedly one of the top travel destinations in the world. Its romantic atmosphere, the legendary sunset and the imposing view from the caldera are enough to make you a permanent resident. If you are looking for short alternative trips, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, then Santorini may be on your list, despite its popularity. See how to to spend 2 days in Santorini in September 2023.

The first day on the island of Santorini in September 2023

Santorini is an attraction in itself, you realize this from the first moment you set foot in the port and face the imposing red rocks. When you manage to escape the army of rooms to let, then your journey will officially begin.

Firostefani

First stop is Firostefani! Enjoy your breakfast in one of the cafes in the area, which give you a great view and of course the necessary strength to continue your tour. If you feel rested, it is worth walking the path Firostefani – Fira and fill your camera’s memory with white domes and different shots of the volcano.

Continuing your route,  stop at Finikia, a beautiful picturesque settlement just below Oia. In Finikia you will find everything you are looking for in the post-covid era, calmness, no crowds and of course absolute Santorinian hospitality. After regrouping and the necessary luggage arrangements, it is time for yourfirst dive.

Perivolos beach

Next stop Perivolos. The huge black beach of Santorini awaits you for unforgettable moments by the sea. Black fine gravel and dark blue waters marry with the volcanic landscape and challenge you to dive. As in any volcanic landscape, the ground literally “boils”, so your journey from the deck chair to the beach will be a chore, so make sure you have the right equipment nearby.

See the villages of Santorini in September 2023

Santorini has wonderful villages and it is worth taking a road trip to the mountainous and unknown villages of Santorini to most tourists. There is Emporio which is the largest village and has an impressive medieval Kasteli, the cave settlement of Vothona 3.3 km from Fira and the nearby lively village of Mesaria which was the center of industrial development in Santorini during the 19th century.

You can also go to the village of Karterados south of Fira, which during the 19th century was one of the largest captain’s villages on the island, to the small village of Vourvoulos in the northeast, to Exo Gonia in the south which is built on a slope and to the adjacent Episkopi Gonia with the famous church of Panagia Episkopi.

Finally, you can visit the traditional Megalochori near Fira with its wonderful architecture and of course the medieval village of Pyrgos which dominates the slope of Prophet Ilias and has a view of the whole of Santorini. The first capital of the island until 1800 is a castle that retains the characteristics of the Venetian empire with churches, while mansions and country houses coexist harmoniously.

Prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri

Among the attractions of Santorini, the prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri holds the sceptre. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Aegean. It is located at the southwestern end of the island and is 15 km from Fira. The site can be visited again from April 2012, after the completion of the construction of the new bioclimatic roof.

The second day in Santorini in September 2023

Start back for the old port of Fira and set sail for the volcano of Santorini. A unique experience awaits you there, as you will arrive by sailboat in Nea Kameni and climb the craters. The view is impressive, as is the atmosphere that the place exudes. The continuation finds us in Palea Kameni for warmer dips in its thermal waters. You can take a Santorini Private Personalized Tour with us!

Take a trip to the volcano Santorini in September 2023

Take a trip to the volcano with the boats that start from Gialos i.e. the old port of Fira, the port of Athens and Ammoudi below Oia. The visit to the volcanoes Nea Kameni and Palaia Kameni with the thermal springs will bring you closer to the myth of the Lost Atlantis and the beginning of the creation of today’s Santorini. You will first go to Nea Kameni where you can walk up to the crater of the volcano. You can take a tour of Santorini!

You should know that in summer the route is not easy, especially if you are not in good physical condition. The path is uphill in several places and the ground is loose. However, the magnificent view of the caldera and its settlements from all parts of the island will compensate you for your effort. Then you will go to Palaia Kameni with the hot springs. If you want, you can swim. The waters have a yellowish color, temperature 5 degrees higher than the rest of the sea and the smell of sulfur is strong.

If you have visited the volcano, invest in a guided tour of one of the island’s wineries and close your day with a tasting. It is worth visiting the village of Pyrgos and Exo Gonia. You can combine it after your bath in Perivolos. For souvenirs, choose beyond the classic magnets, local products, such as Santorini cherry jam, fava beans and of course a vinsanto wine.

Why visit Santorini in Autumn 2023?

Why-visit-Santorini-in-Autumn-2023
Why visit Santorini in Autumn 2023?

In our minds we have combined the Greek islands with summer, the intense sun and the dips in the blue waters. The reality, however, is that every season of the year Santorini is very beautiful. Not only are there less people in the alleys and beaches and the prices are more favorable, but also the people are more relaxed. See why you should visit Santorini in Autumn 2023.

The tourist season now lasts until the middle or end of October, while in some islands, such as Santorini, it has been extended until the end of November.

The legend says that Santorini emerged from the depths of the sea. Signs of life date back to the Early Bronze Age, in the middle of the third millennium BC. The best-known prehistoric settlement is the one in the Akrotiri area, which was buried under ash in the great eruption of the volcano around 1600 BC.

Along with Thirassia and Apsronisi, Santorini is the remnant of the volcanic island of Strongili. Parts of its volcano include Nea and Palaia Kameni. There are many boats that go around the Caldera, giving the visitor the opportunity to see up close the steep rocks and the contrast of the black earth with the white of the Cyclades.

Idyllic sunset in absolute silence

A work of art reminds of the time of sunset in Santorini. From whichever side of the island you choose to see it, the colors will captivate your gaze. These days, in fact, when the tourist traffic is relatively reduced, the quietness combined with the incredible view that almost the entire island offers will captivate you. We suggest you to walk in Oia and just before sunset choose one of its white terraces and indulge in the magnificent view.

Luxury accommodations at a better price

This is one more reason to want to travel to Santorini in autumn. All those rooms with the white terraces and swimming pools that we admire in the summer, but are never available, are now available at much better prices. In Santorini there are plenty of accommodation options, from rooms for rent to luxurious suites with a unique view of the Caldera. You can take a tour of Santorini!

Walks in the beautiful villages and visits to the archaeological sites

In our mind, Santorini has been combined with the sunset, the white houses and the Volcano. And yet, it offers much more. Autumn is ideal to get to know Santorini in all its glory. You can easily tour its villages, observe how the locals live (who will be more relaxed compared to summer), walk more comfortably in its alleys and easily climb Skaros, the black rock that in the summer months becomes inaccessible. In addition, you can visit the island’s museums, but also its archaeological sites, such as Akrotiri and Ancient Thira, which emerged as one of the most important urban centers of the Aegean in the past centuries and many liken it to the lost Atlantis.

Delicious local dishes

Santorini, in addition to its natural beauty, is also famous for its delicious cuisine. Who does not know Santorini fava beans, capers, local vegetables (usually dehydrated) or the famous tomato meatballs and kopania? All this and more you can enjoy in Santorini. Except that in autumn there will be no waiting in the restaurants, while you will be able to book the table you want.

The unique experience of a wine tour

And since we mentioned wine, let us remind you that Santorini is known worldwide for its wine production. The main grape varieties grown in Santorini and which give all its wide variety of wines are Assyrtiko (which accounts for 80% of the island’s production), Athiri and Aidani from the whites and Mantilaria, Mavrotragano and Voudomato from the red ones. Of course, don’t forget to try Santorini’s signature wine, Vinsanto.  You can book a wine tour with Santorini Tours and learn from the professionals why the vineyards in Santorini are not like those in the rest of Greece, taste the unique varieties of wine, learn with which to accompany your favorite your food, but also to be informed about all the innovations prepared by the producers, with the aim of the highest quality product and the protection of the environment.

From the best sunsets to museum tours and delightful vineyard walks, Santorini is well worth a visit during these months. And it may in the minds of most be one of the ultimate summer destinations, however, Santorini is irresistibly charming and wonderful in autumn as well.

When the first cool breeze means Autumn, Santorini enchants with its pure white simplicity and the calm that emerges in the volcanic landscape, the previously bustling alleys and the unique sunsets.

This is the season to feel its charm, the charm of Autumn spread over the black and red volcanic rocks, with the white houses and the blue and white churches

Now that the weather is sweeter, without the summer heat, visit Palaia and Nea Kammeni. Refresh yourself with a morning walk on the path that connects Fira with Imerovigli and Oia, enjoying the magnificent view along the Caldera. Get to know the ancient history of the island at Akrotiri.
