A guide for travelling to Santorini in summer 2023

A-guide-for-travelling-to-Santorini-in-summer-2023

Here is a guide for travelling to Santorini in summer 2023 by Santorini Tours. The white houses with the blue roofs that are built on the edge of the cliff, create an extraordinary image that can amaze even the most demanding visitor.

The island is mainly known for its enchanting sunset and volcano, but it has more than that. Below we have made a list of where to stay, what to eat and what to do for an unforgettable trip to Santorini in summer 2023.

What to expect from Santorini in summer 2023?

Santorini is an island in the Aegean Sea and belongs to the Cyclades. It is a highly touristic island due to its traditional architecture and Instagrammable scenery.

Whatever type of traveler you are, Santorini has a lot to offer. If you are a history buff then you must visit ancient Thira or the prehistoric archaeological site at Akrotiri. If you like good food, here you will definitely find many options of local and traditional flavors, as well as a huge variety of wines from local producers to accompany them. Finally, if what you are looking for is nightlife, then Santorini is the ideal island for you.

The volcano of Santorini

The caldera of the volcano is probably the most famous attraction of the island. It was created by many volcanic eruptions, the most famous being the Minoan one in the 17th century BC. In the center of the caldera you will find two small islands, Palia and Nea Kameni. Access to Nea Kameni is by boat that operates daily. There you can walk for 20 minutes on stabilized lava and reach the crater at the top of the island. Or take a dip in the exotic orange waters, created by the hot springs.

The best beaches of santorini

In Santorini in summer 2023, due to the volcanic eruption, you will find unique beaches.

Red beach

Red Beach is one of the most famous beaches of the island and is located in its southern part. Access to it is easy and can be done either on foot or by boat from Akrotiri. Also, it is good to know that the beach is organized.

Perivolos

Another famous beach of the island with black sand is Perivolos. It is the largest beach in terms of area and satisfies every type of visitor. Here you can find many beach bars, cafes and taverns, but also quiet corners to rest.

Vlychada

Vlychada is also a beautiful beach of the island, in its southeastern part. Most of it is organized, however you can find enough space to enjoy your bath in peace. You should know, however, that there is no cell phone signal on this beach.

White beach

White Beach is the one that makes the difference. As its name suggests, it is made up of white rocks that create a strong contrast with the black sand and all together create an idyllic landscape. To get to Aspri beach you have to take the boat from Akrotiri and be prepared that you won’t find any taverns, canteens or bars here.

What to eat in Santorini in summer 2023?

It is impossible to be in Santorini in summer 2023 and not try its local and traditional flavors. You can take a tour of Santorini!

Fava (split peas)

You can’t come this far and not try Santorini’s famous fava. This local legume dominates many dishes but also in its simple form. I suggest you try the married Fava, if you like capers.

Tomato balls

The locals are very proud of their tomato balls, and not without reason. Santorini tomato meatballs are made from local, pure products and give you a taste that you won’t need anything else.

Santorinian salad

With a Santorini salad you will taste almost all the famous products of the island. Its basis is the Santorini cherry and it has capers, nuts and chlorotyri.

Local wine

Among other things, Santorini is known for its wines. Here you can find wineries to visit that will introduce you to the flavors and aromas of the wines produced in the volcanic vineyards. Do not miss to try the famous Vincento, the local variety of the island.

How to move inside the island in summer 2023?

One solution is definitely to rent a car, a scooter or a pig. But the streets of Santorini are narrow and small and driving might not be the best and safest solution. On the other hand, the island provides public transportation with buses.

Where to stay in Santorini in summer 2023?

Santorini is divided into two parts, the Western and the Eastern.

Western section of the island

The busiest part of the island is the western part because that is where the caldera, Thira and Oia are located. Most of the hotels located at this point have amazing views of the caldera, the sea and the sunset. But there are also negatives. Initially the prices are very high, the majority of hotels have many stairs and many of these do not accept children under 13 years old. Finally, it is good to know that not all hotels on the west side have a view, as some of them are located inside the settlements.

Eastern part of the island

On the other hand, the Eastern side is more similar to the rest of the Cyclades. Here you will find seaside hotels that attract many young people and families. These hotels usually offer larger and cheaper rooms than those on the west side.

9 beaches you should swim in Santorini 2023

9-beaches-you-should-swim-in-Santorini-2023
9 beaches you should swim in Santorini 2023

Perhaps the most special island of the Cyclades is Santorini, or Thira for those who prefer it. There are 9 beaches you should swim in Santorini 2023 and you can visit them with Santorini Tours. Its beauties are infinite and famous enough: the volcano, the sunset, the white houses, the view from the caldera make up a scene that attracts visitors from all over the world like a magnet!

The beaches of Santorini are truly unique due to the peculiar geological landscape that in contact with the sea becomes even more impressive. The special waters of the volcano and the recently formed complex seabed create, in combination with the colorful rocks of the land, an almost out of this world scenery.

1. Red Beach

Let’s start from the most famous beach of the island located at the southern end of the island, the legendary Red Beach. Its immense fame no doubt also reflects its insurmountable beauty, an explosive combination of red and black rocks, dark blue crystal waters, red sand alternating with black pebbles and underwater hot springs. It is relatively small so it is usually full of people.

Don’t forget to take the appropriate sun and heat protection with you, as the temperature here is usually higher than the rest of the island. Among its disadvantages is the access ban issued by the authorities due to landslides, which is why those who visit it do so at their own risk.

2. White Beach

Very close to Red Beach is White Beach. It is a welcoming cove surrounded by tall, white cliffs, with black sand mixed with white pebbles and crystal clear waters. Its special feature is its white color which contrasts with the dark or reddish colors found on the rest of the beaches of the island.

Here you will find a canteen to get the necessary supplies. Do not miss under any circumstances to visit the nearby archaeological site of Akrotiri, one of the most important prehistoric settlements of the Aegean that was buried under the ash of the Thera volcano.

3. Vlychada beach

At the southernmost tip of the island is Vlychada, a long beach with characteristic yellowish rocks and caves that have been carved by time and waves. The coast has fine black sand and dark pebbles. Here you will find umbrellas and a picturesque beach bar built into the rocks, while above the harbor where small boats are moored there are taverns for food.

4. Kamari beach

A little further north, under the Mesa Vounos where the ancient Thera was built, is Kamari, the rival awe of Perissa. It brings together some of the most typical characteristics of Santorini beaches: black sand with pebbles, wonderfully clear and deep waters, cafes, taverns, clubs, mini markets, tourist offices, etc. Despite the crowds, Kamari remains one of the largest and most charming beaches in island.

5. Monolithos beach

We remain on the eastern coastline, where a little north of Kamari we will meet Monolithos. It is a beautiful beach with black sand – no pebbles this time – and relatively shallow waters, a true paradise for family outings. It also has all the amenities, taverns, cafes, hotels, mini markets and everything a bather could need.

6. Exo Gialos beach

Very close to Monolithos, after passing the village of Karterados, you will come across Exo Gialos, a coast with black fine pebbles, dark blue waters and tamarisk trees, a not so common feature of Santorini. It is organized and sometimes very secular and noisy, with often large parties that vibrate the area.

7. Columbus Beach

Approaching the northern part of the island, near Oia, you will find a beach different from the classic, tourist beaches of the island. It is Columbus, a secluded and wild beach in a lunar landscape of incomparable beauty. To the right of the coast, in the Seal Cave as it is called, there is also an underwater active volcano. The beach is a favorite choice for nudists and adventurous types.

8. Ammoudi beach

Passing by the beaches of the western coastline facing the caldera, we come across Amoudi, right at the port of Oia. It is a small cove with a wonderful view towards Thirasia, with rocks and steep, deep water, suitable for skilled swimmers. You will reach it if you go down the 214 steps from the famous Oia with the even more famous sunset. You can take a tour of Santorini!

9. Beaches in Thirasia

Opposite Santorini is the small island of Thirasia, a remnant of the prehistoric island of Strongyli that sank after the eruption of the volcano around 1600 BC. and created the caldera. Thirasia generally has small and steep beaches, the crystal clear waters and their magnificent view make swimming in them an unforgettable experience. For those who visit there is the Black Beach near the port of Riva, as well as the beach in the small port of Corfu with pebbles and pumice stones.

7 beaches you can visit in Santorini in August 2022

7-beaches-you-can-visit-in-Santorini-in-August-2022

Santorini has the reputation of being the most romantic island with the most amazing sunset almost all over the world. The beauties of the island are many, but the excellent beaches of Santorini are another feature that makes it stand out.

These are the 7 beaches you can visit in Santorini in August 2022 that are worth visiting during your holiday on the island, without saying that the rest cannot also pleasantly surprise you.

1. Red beach

The name of this beach is due to the red rocks that surround it.

It is located just half a kilometer from the archaeological site of Akrotiri and 8 kilometers from Fira.

Red Beach is not accessible by car, so you will need to leave somewhere and continue on foot.

There is also access by tourist boat from Akrotiri and Perissa.

It would be good to have a pair of beach shoes and a bottle of water with you.

Upon arrival, you will be impressed by the unique natural landscape and the beach, which consists of red and black pebbles.

2. White beach

It got its specific name because of the white rocks that surround it.

It is located next to the Red Beach and is only accessible by sea.

You can get there by tourist boat from Akrotiri, Perissa and from the neighboring Red Beach. If you are a large group, we would suggest renting a sailboat and doing the tour of Santorini at the same time.

It is considered one of the most famous beaches.

For the adventurous, there is access by swimming through the cave, which connects Aspri beach with the neighboring Mesa Pigadia beach.

In addition to a few umbrellas and sunbeds, visitors can get water and other supplies from the underground canteen located on the beach.

3. Perivolos

If you are looking for beach parties in Santorini in August 2022, Perivolos is the right beach for you.

Santorini may be famous for its romance, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have options for the free and beautiful.

The beach bars in Perivolos host well-known guest DJs from all over the world, offering the ultimate entertainment to the guests.

For music and dance lovers, it seems like the ideal place.

It is mainly recommended for the youth, as it is the noisiest beach in Santorini.

Together with Perissa, which is right next to it, they form the largest beach of the island. You can take a tour of Santorini!

4. Perissa

Perissa is one of the most organized beaches in Santorini and the cheapest place to stay on the volcanic island!

It forms the base of Mesa Vounos which separates Perissa from Kamari.

Perissa is one of the busiest beaches in Santorini and has been awarded a blue flag.

It is a fully organized beach that has a mini market, water park, bars, cafes, taverns and shops selling beach accessories.

Also, if you are a fan of beach sports, there is a beach volleyball court available, while for water sports fans, there are facilities with watersports equipment.

Perissa is located 13 kilometers from Fira.

5. Kamari

It is one of the most secular beaches of the island, due to its proximity to Santorini airport.

It is located on the other side of Mesa Vounos, under the hill of Ancient Thera. It is one of the most organized beaches, with a blue flag and has all the necessary shops for a visitor.

It is famous for its volcanic black sandy beach which, in combination with the white accommodation located around, offers an idyllic landscape.

On the paved pedestrian street of the beach you will find restaurants, cafe-bars and ATMs as night clubs operate in the area in the evening.

6. Monolithos

Looking to find the most popular family beach in Santorini in August 2022?

Monolithos beach seems like the ideal place for you.

The fact that it has shallow waters and fine sand, without pebbles, attracts many families looking for safe beaches for children.

It is considered the favorite beach of the locals.

Near the beach there is a playground, as well as courts for various sports.

At the end of the beach, there is a picturesque harbor and along the beach the rock that looks like a sculpture of nature.

On the beach you will find some restaurants and fish taverns up where the wave breaks.

7. Vlychada

For those looking for isolation in Santorini in August 2022, Vlychada is the ideal place.

Although a few umbrellas and sunbeds have recently been added at the beginning of the beach, there is plenty of room for natural swimmers.

The volcanic profile of the beach combined with the lunar rocks make you feel like you are on another planet.

In the port of Vlychada you will find taverns overlooking the sea and the luxury boats that dock there.

You will definitely need the right equipment and accessories for this beautiful, unorganized beach.

Arriving at the port of Santorini in August 2022, facing the looming rock in front of you, you realize from the first moment that what is happening on this island is something charmingly otherworldly. If you plan to take a  in August 2022, you will understand that nothing that is written or said about it is exaggerated.

Santorini: Europe’s Best Island at US Global Traveler Awards

As stated by the General Secretary of EOT Dimitris Fraggakis: “The new distinctions of our country, this time from the United States of America, are another confirmation of the high position of preference that Greece holds as a destination abroad. But it is also an encouraging sign for 2021 – a year in which the recovery of Greek tourism will gradually begin. In an extremely competitive environment, our country will show its comparative advantages in international markets.

Especially the USA is a very important market for our country over time, but also especially in view of the new season, EOT is already elaborating a projection plan with the spearhead of the Organization’s office in the USA which is strengthened and takes a more active role.
