5 days in Santorini: Everything you must see

5-days-in-santorini-everything-you-must-see

Known around the world and one of the most famous tourist destinations in the Mediterranean, Santorini is a dream vacation for many. Five days may not be enough to get to know it from end to end, but they are capable of giving a complete picture of the island, which is dominated by the volcano and the impressive caldera.

The beautiful villages, some hanging on the edge of the cliff and others built in a unique way inland, the cave houses of traditional architecture, the churches, the unique wine that this very special land produces.

But also its very special beaches, make Santorini an ideal destination that combines both the rest and the comfort of the holidays, as well as the acquaintance with the new, the different. The prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri, an archaeological site of unique value for all of humanity, is also a tourist attraction.

Five days in Santorini are ideal to visit its most popular villages, to see up close its impressive sights and its very special beaches, but also to visit both the volcano and Akrotiri.

The villages

Thira or Fira

Fira is the established name for the capital of Santorini, the official name is Thira. Today it is the largest settlement, it is located in the middle, on the “eyebrow” of the caldera and gathers not only most of the services, but also the visitors. Below the village, at sea level, is Gialos, the old port of Santorini.

Throughout the year, Fira is bustling with life, as the vast majority of shops remain open. Supermarkets, grocery stores, shops, banks and public services are located around the central square of the city, Theotokopoulos Square, while travel agencies, hotels and rooms for rent, restaurants and bars can be found in almost every alley, especially in the caldera.

In the capital of Santorini are the seats of both the Orthodox and Catholic churches of the island. You can take a Santorini exclusive shore private tour with us.

Oia

Oia of Santorini is the most famous settlement of the island, known throughout the world for its unique sunset, when the sun sinks into the blue sea behind the volcano… It is built in the northernmost part of the caldera and preserves unchanged the traditional Cycladic, and especially theraiki, architecture, the traditional caves and captains’ houses, the houses of the island’s shipwrights.

Imerovigli

At the highest point of the caldera, Imerovigli has been standing since the Byzantine era, gazing at the impressive volcano from a height of about 300 meters from the sea. Today it is one of the most developed tourist spots in Santorini, with high-quality hotels, restaurants and other shops, which welcome tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world every year.

The view of the sunset from Imerovigli is unique and many recommend the village for romantic holidays. A special place for the village is the Castle of Skaros, the old Kasteli which for several centuries was the capital of the island. You can take a tour of Santorini!

Pyrgos

One of the largest villages of Santorini, Pyrgos is built in the southern part of the island, at the foot of Prophet Ilias and at a distance of 10 kilometers from Fira. The view from the village to the whole of Santorini is magnificent, while the old castle, which is preserved to this day in very good condition, is uniquely decorated on the night of Good Friday, during the procession of the Epitaph. Inside and outside the castle of Pyrgos there are a total of about 48 churches and chapels.

Emporio

Emporio of Santorini is the most populous settlement of the island and is located approximately 12 kilometers south of Fira, near Akrotiri, at the foot of Prophet Ilias. The traditional Kasteli of Emporio is preserved to this day in very good condition, just like the medieval Goulas.

The old Primary School, built in 1900 with a donation from Andreas Sygrou, is still considered a sight to see, while just outside the village is the famous beach of Perissa, one of the most popular in Santorini. Even from afar, facing the village, the visitor sees the ornate bell tower of Panagia Messiani, located inside the castle.

Akrotiri

Akrotiri of Santorini is known because of the great discovery of the prehistoric settlement. The modern settlement is built on the southern tip of the island, very close to one of the most famous beaches of Santorini, the Red Beach.

It is characterized by Kastelli, the medieval castle at its highest point and has excellent tourist infrastructure, from tourist accommodation, to cafes, restaurants and water sports. One of the areas that the visitor deserves to see is Balos or Palos, a small bay just outside the village.

Volcano

There is no other island in the world like Santorini and its uniqueness is mainly due to the volcano. It is one of the most important in the world, it was born from the sea and significantly influenced the geological form of the entire Eastern Mediterranean – of course also the human life and activity in the area.

When the locals say volcano today, they mean the small island of Nea Kameni, in the center of the almost circular perimeter formed by Santorini, Thirasia and Aspronisi. In Nea Kameni, after all, one can see vapors emitting steam from the bowels of the earth, while only about 60 years ago, its most recent soils were formed, during the 1950 eruption.

Right next to it, Palaia Kameni is the island that was formed about 2,000 years ago, during the 47 AD eruption. Both islets of the volcano can be visited and one can even walk on them and reach the steams of Nea Kameni or swim in the warm waters of Palaia, where sulfur is released, coloring them yellowish.

4. Archaeological site of Akrotiri

If you are interested in the history of Santorini in 2022, the ancient site of Akrotiri is one of the best places on the island to visit. The location is one of the most important in the Aegean Sea and is also characterized as the “Lost Atlantis”.

The Tower, in addition to its traditional beauty, is especially popular for the procession of the Epitaph on Good Friday night, when fires are lit in tin lamps throughout the village.

7. Ammoudi

Ammoudi is a small fishing village located below Oia. If you want to take a dip in the sea, follow the path after the restaurants where you will find a nice place to swim and dive in the clear waters.

8. Red Beach

Red Beach is unlike any other. For a start, it is framed by striking red rocks along the black volcanic sand. It is located in Akrotiri, a short distance from the archeological site. You can take a tour of Santorini!

9. Megalochori

Why is it better to go to Santorini in winter?

Why-is-it-better-to-go-to-Santorini-in-winter

Why is it better to go to Santorini in winter?

Santorini in winter is off-season and this is exactly what should be taken advantage of by those who want to really enjoy the beauty and the uniqueness of the island with Santorini Tours. You can find Santorinitours and you can call us on 694 457 7918. Arriving in Santorini, whether viewed from above or from the sea, one is enchanted by the uniqueness of the landscape, after all, it is not unjustly among the top three tourist destinations in the world.

Where to stay in Santorini in winter

Fira is the ideal place to stay in the winter, it is the capital of the island and the only place that has life throughout the day. Hotels, restaurants, cafes, have much lower prices than in the summer, so having the caldera on your feet will not cost a fortune. Everything that can be done in Santorini, will make it much more comfortable in winter, due to the fact that there is not a large number of tourists on the island compared to the summer when there is overcrowding.

What you will see and what you will do in Santorini in winter

The rhythms may be more relaxed and not so touristy but rather this is an advantage and not a disadvantage for you who are a traveler. For example, you can enjoy the famous sunset without having to wait in line to take a picture yourself without dozens of tourists next to you. In Santorini in winter you will enjoy the sunset without distractions and anywhere you want. You will be impressed with how unique the colors are in the gray of the winter sky.

You can walk on the red beach maybe even alone. The wild beauty of Kokkini Paralia “is unique. In the winter at most you can meet some Chinese tourists who just take some pictures and leave. If a sunny day occurs, relax and have a picnic with your loved ones, gazing at the red rocks.

You can climb to the volcano of Santorini with very favorable temperatures so the ascent will be much easier. Without the 35 degrees Celsius and also a lot of people. The same goes for the archeological site that takes you back to the 16th century BC. You will even see the houses and jars from then on. In Santorini in winter you have the opportunity to enjoy and learn the history of this place in a completely peaceful and quiet landscape.

Santorini beyond the caldera

The caldera of Santorini, the big cliff that was created when half the island sank due to a huge eruption of the volcano, is today the most sought after place on the island. The most expensive accommodation in Santorini overlooks the volcano, while the villages of the caldera are spreading more and more on the edge of the cliff. It is undoubtedly a very impressive landscape that takes the breath away of those who see it for the first time, especially from the sea, with the white houses and the churches with the blue domes, looking like a wreath on the rocks.

Those who know well, however, assure that the real beauty of Santorini lies in the hinterland and its fertile land and its villages, such as Pyrgos, a real labyrinth with narrow streets and old churches, built so that it is invincible from any threat. The vineyards and wineries of Santorini are located inland, as well as the old tomato factory, which for decades prepared the well-known canned tomato from Santorini and which today functions as a museum.

Akrotiri in winter

If the caldera and the volcano itself did not steal all the glory of Santorini, then the archeological site at Akrotiri would be the reason why the island would be known worldwide. There, the settlement that flourished on the island when the great volcanic eruption was recorded, around 1650 BC, is maintained in exceptional condition.

Today it is a visitable archeological site where all the grandeur of that settlement is captured: two-storey buildings, murals, public works, make Akrotiri one of the most important archeological sites in the world. It is characteristic that only one in 20 visitors to Santorini – out of the more than 2 million it receives annually – visits Akrotiri, located at the southern tip of the island, on the opposite side of Oia, which gathers crowds.

Santorini’s culture

The architecture, the old churches, the caves, the canvases – the wineries of Santorini, its museums and its culture in general, are “lost” in the light of summer, the noisy crowd looking for rest and service and the frenzy – many times on popular islands – summer rhythms. All these are, after all, critical factors for which some of the visitors of the island, even declare disappointed, after visiting it. You can take a tour of Santorini!

On the contrary, an off season visit gives everyone the opportunity to get to know the culture of the island. To admire the way the cave houses are built and why, how they protect their inhabitants from natural or other dangers. You can see the Tower and its houses, Emporio, the Castle of Oia and the Castle of Fira. Also, you may visit the museums of the island and learn its history, so that they really know it and understand it deeply.
