History of Imerovigli
The name of Imerovigli came from the combination of a Greek and a Latin word. The first word is imera, it is Greek and it means day, the second word is vigilare, it is Latin and it means take a look outside. The village of Imerovigli is reported as a transitional housing development and there are clear instructions of what architecture the buildings must have.
The castle of Skaros was the capital of the island since the 18th century. The old castle was built at the end of the Byzantine period by the Venetians that came here in 13th century a.d. The whole village was built In the area around of the castle. The Castle of Skaros is one of the five castles in Santorini and people used stone as the main material for its construction. You can still see the ruins of a bridge at the central door of the castle.
After the explosion of the volcano in the year of 1650 the castle was greatly damaged and its condition became worst after an earthquake in 1817. This is why the reason that the only thing you can see now is ruins. In addition, the locals used the castle’s stones in order to build new houses when they left the area.
