We live and work on this island, so this page is not a defence of it. Santorini has real problems: two million visitors a year on an island of fifteen thousand people, prices on the caldera rim that are genuinely hard to justify, black volcanic beaches that disappoint people expecting the Caribbean, and steps everywhere. Paved streets, houses of two and three storeys, indoor drainage, storage jars still in place, wall paintings. No bodies and no valuables were found, which suggests the population left before the end. It sits under a modern roof, so it is comfortable at midday in August.
The Museum of Prehistoric Thera
In Fira, holding the frescoes and finds taken from Akrotiri. Small, air-conditioned, and it doubles the value of the site. Do the museum after the site rather than before.
Ancient Thira
A Greek, Hellenistic and Roman city strung along a ridge eight hundred feet above Kamari, with a theatre looking out to open sea. The road up is a series of hairpins that large coaches cannot use, and it closes in the early afternoon.
The eruption itself
One of the largest in human history. It emptied the magma chamber, collapsed the centre of the island into the sea, buried Akrotiri and sent a tsunami as far as Crete. Everything you look at here is a consequence of it.

Will you get up early once? Everyone who did says it was the best hour of the trip. Everyone who did not spent the week in a queue.
Four yeses and the island will be one of the best weeks you have had. Two noes and there are thirty other Greek islands that will suit you better, and we would rather say so now than sell you a week you did not enjoy.
Is Santorini Worth Visiting Without a Car?
Yes, and a good number of people should. Buses reach Oia, Kamari, Perissa, Akrotiri, the airport and the port from the station in Fira, and they are cheap and reliable in season.
The catch is that every route changes in Fira, which turns a fifteen-minute journey into an hour, and services finish early in the evening. There are around thirty licensed taxis for the whole island, so there is no fallback.
What works. Stay in Fira or Firostefani, walk the rim, use buses for the beaches and Oia, and book a driver for the two or three days that contain real sightseeing – the wineries, Ancient Thira, the lighthouse, the inland villages. Those are exactly the places the buses do not go.
What does not. Reaching Ancient Thira, Thirasia, the estates or the far south on public transport in a day. It cannot be done. Daily tours.
Is It Worth Visiting Twice in One Trip?
An odd question that comes up more than you would think, usually from people island-hopping who wonder whether to bookend a trip here.
The answer is yes if the two visits are different: arrive for two nights on the rim at the start, go elsewhere, and come back for three nights inland or on the coast at the end. The rim and the coast are genuinely two holidays and doing them separately works.
It is no if you simply repeat the same two villages. Anyone weighing is santorini worth visiting for a second stop in the same fortnight should spend those nights on Naxos or Milos instead and come back another year.
The Verdict
Santorini is worth visiting, and it is worth visiting properly.
The caldera is one of the great sights in Europe and it does not disappoint anybody. Akrotiri is a world-class archaeological site that most visitors skip. The wine is unlike anything else on the continent. The food, eaten inland, is excellent and ordinarily priced. The light, at the right hour, is the reason photographers keep coming back.
Against that: it is small, it is crowded in two places at one time of day, the rim is expensive, the beaches are volcanic and the steps are relentless. Every one of those is manageable, and none of them is a reason not to come.

Booked that way it is one of the best weeks in the Mediterranean. Booked the other way it is a queue with a view.
