Travel in luxury and stand amidst the remarkably preserved prehistoric ruins of Akrotiri, admire the ancient-old exhibits at the Prehistoric Museum of Fira and uncover winemaking secrets while sipping on a glass of fine local wine at Venetsanos Winery.
What to Expect from Santorini Wine and History Private Tour
After meeting your guide at the designated point, we head for the Akrotiri Archeological Site, a prominent historical location, not only of Santorini but of the whole Aegean. Excavations in this area have revealed one of the most important prehistoric settlements of the Aegean. Before becoming covered in volcanic material, Akrotiri was an important center of the Aegean, full of activity as indicated by the various items found on site, with ties to the Greek Mainland, Crete, the Dodecanese and even Egypt, Cyprus and Syria! The findings have been preserved by the very same ash that destroyed the city allowing the visitor of today to marvel at this wonder of antiquity.
The Prehistoric Museum of Fira is next on our itinerary. The museum houses a very large number of ancient artefacts from various excavations on the island including Akrotiri. Exhibits are categorized in sections pertaining to the history of research in Fira, its geology, the Late Neolithic to Cycladic I Period and the Late Cycladic I Period. Witnessing these ancient artefacts is a true experience with some dating back to around 3000 BC.
After finishing our historical exploration, we make our way to the Venetsanos Winery and become familiar with the art of wine-making and also try the famous local wine and other Greek products. From there, we shall proceed to Profitis Ilias Monastery, perched on the summit of the highest mountain of the island and dating back to 1711. From the yard of the Monastery, you get the most breathtaking views of the whole island of Santorini.
Our final stop on our itinerary is Koutsogiannopoulos Wine Museum. The museum is truly one of a kind: a 300-meter labyrinth shaped cave, 8 meters under the ground, it is an exhibition of the history of local wine and the life of vine-growers since 1660! A wealth of artefacts, images and representations will take the visitor on an amazing journey through the history of winemaking in Santorini.
