Visit the amazing Santorini in the summer of 2024

Visit the amazing Santorini in the summer of 2024
Take a Santorini private tour in summer 2024!

Santorini is one of the most enchanting islands in Greece and you must have this experience once in your life, especially in summer 2024. It is a rocky island directly opposite the volcano, with black and red beaches and its towns perched on the caldera and cliffs of the volcano offering unique views and fantastic sunsets.

The island of Santorini has a dramatic beauty in contrast to the lush vegetation and greenery on other islands. Santorini has the only inhabited caldera of a volcano in the world, this is the main reason for the millions of tourists who visit the island every year.

The colored layers of volcanic rock are spectacular in their own right: chocolate brown, rusty red, yellow ocher, white, and cream. But the geological uniqueness is not the only thing that makes Santorini a magical holiday destination. Many holidaymakers prefer to stay on the beaches, Perissa and Kamari, and others in Fira, Imerovigli, and Oia, the towns on the caldera, which are very beautiful and full of cafes, shops and other interests.

The majestic sunsets of Santorini in summer 2024

Many have read about the spectacular sunsets that occur on this island and the skeptic may wonder if the sunset can really appear differently here than on the neighboring islands of Naxos or Ios and Anafi. However, the sunset in Santorini, from the Caldera, really is a magical painting with the volcano as a backdrop. The colors change from deep red to yellow to orange and purple as the sun sinks into the Aegean and turns golden red reflecting the light on the sea and surrounding islands.

Fira

Fira is the capital of the island of Santorini. The setting is simply spectacular, the city perched on the edge near vertical cliffs plunging into the caldera, the sea-flooded crater of the volcano that created the island.

Giant cruise ships moor to floating buoys in the harbor and passengers ride the cable car up the 250m cliff or climb a mule to take them up the steep zig-zag path. Fira is also every photographer’s dream with its whitewashed traditional houses and blue-domed churches, but always full of holidaymakers and day-trippers. The popularity of the island means that nothing comes cheap in Fira, especially in taverns and bars with the best views of the caldera, where prices can be astronomical.

The resort is busiest at sunset when cameras try to capture the spectacular fiery sunsets that Santorini is famous for. There is a small archaeological museum and exhibits include 8th century red and black urns and the Museum of Prehistoric Thira has artifacts from Akrotiri. Also, there are daily boat trips to the active volcanic islands located in the center of the caldera whose sulfurous mists are mainly responsible for these dramatic sunsets.

Oia

If Fira is modern, Oia is modern. Oia has great views of the caldera rim and a winding staircase that leads to a small dock. Many houses here survived the 1956 earthquake and most have been tastefully renovated. Some are in bright, rich colors, but most are bright white, clinging to the red and gray rocks so close that one family’s roof is another’s backyard

Oia’s shops tend to sell more authentic goods, the food is more traditional Greek, and disco music is usually absent. Oia is a place for designer jewelry, art galleries, and beauty boutiques. Oia’s main square overlooks the caldera and acts as a gathering point for sunset watchers who sometimes offer a wild round of applause as the sun sinks below the horizon.

It is worth visiting the Maritime Museum, with models of ships and other marine paraphernalia. Oia has several art galleries and a cultural center among the souvenir and gift shops. Unlike Fira, Oia has access to the sea at Ammoudi and Armeni, where there are small piers with seaside tavernas. Both are at the bottom of very steep stone steps of about 300 steps, or visitors can opt for a donkey ride.

What to do in Santorini in summer 2024?

There are tennis courts in Kamari and Karterados. In Perissa there is mini golf, a water park, go-karts, and roller skating. There are volleyball and basketball courts in Fira and Kamari. There are also many places to go cycling

Many enjoy the two-hour or so walk from Imerovigli to Fira, which is a very beautiful experience, but make sure you have water with you, although today the two towns with Firostefani in the middle are almost connected.

There are also possibilities to go horse riding. Nightlife is concentrated in Kamari, Perissa, and Fira. Do not forget the famous wineries of the island, where you can visit and taste the local wines of Santorini by taking a Santorini private wine tour.

In Fira, you can also visit the Archaeological Museum and the Prehistoric Museum where you can see objects from the excavations at Akrotiri, as well as many sculpture objects covering the rich historical past of Santorini, from prehistoric times to the Neolithic, Minoan, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine era.

Nightlife and entertainment in Santorini in summer 2024

Santorini has a varied nightlife, and most bars and clubs are located in Fira, Perissa, and Kamari. Fira is probably the most popular place, here you should not miss the opportunity to have a drink in one of the bars and cafes towards the side of the caldera. The amazing view, relaxed atmosphere, and soft music will give you an unforgettable experience.

Explore the alternative Santorini in summer 2024

Explore the alternative Santorini in summer 2024

Santorini is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful Greek islands and one of the most important tourist attractions in Greece. The uniqueness of the Caldera, the white houses that seem to hang on the cliff, the donkeys that roam the cobblestones, and the magical Mediterranean sunsets make the island special and differentiate it from the rest of the Cyclades. Explore Santorini in summer 2024 and see the alternative side of the island.

Emporio

Emporio also known as Niborio, is the largest village of Santorini and has a population of 1,773. This island village is located on the south side of the island at a distance of 12 kilometers from Fira, at the foot of the hill of Prophet Ilias. This traditional settlement was one of the island’s castles, as in medieval times the houses were built next to each other so that the inhabitants could be protected from pirates.

Foinikia

Foinikia is a small but very well preserved traditional village of Santorini, just a few kilometers outside of Oia. At the time when the city of Oia experienced great prosperity with shipping, in Finikia lived the farmers who worked in the plains and the vineyards. This picturesque village is a beautiful alternative and a quiet place to spend the evening if you are staying in Oia.

Being there, you can walk from the beach of Baxedos to the settlement, and take the road that leads to the valley with the vineyards and the beautiful churches of Agia Kyriaki and Agios Konstantinos. From the small church of Kyra Panagia, you can enjoy the sunset in peace.

Monolithos

Monolithos is a coastal village of Santorini, on the eastern side of the island, 8 kilometers east of Fira and 405 people live in it. It belongs administratively to the Local District of Mesaria of the Municipality of Thira. The village took its name from the large rock, the Monolithos, on which the church of Agios Ioannis is built.

Monolithos is home to the National Airport of Santorini, and the only tomato factory operating today that belongs to the Union of Theraean Products Cooperatives.

On the beaches of Monolithos, you will find the famous black sand of Santorini, which is really fine sand and not pebbles, like on most beaches of the island. In fact, in winter, the sand fills the entire area and the road.

The beach of Monolithos was very popular at the time when there was the only beach bar in Santorini. Now there is an organized part with sunbeds and umbrellas and it is considered an ideal beach for families with children. In the left part of Monolithos Beach called “Agria”, the landscape will remind you of the beach of Vlychada. It is the part of the beach that gets the most weather and does not have any type of organization.

Karterados

Two kilometers outside of Fira, the cave village of Karterados is perfect for afternoon walks on its picturesque cobblestone streets, overlooking the endless vineyards that stretch out at its feet.

Akrotiri

The archaeological site which, according to legend, may be all that remains of the mythical Atlantis, is definitely worth a visit, if nothing else to wander the courtyards and streets of a state whose inhabitants built two-story houses in 4500 BC The archaeological site, covered by a modern bioclimatic canopy, is very organized and impressive.

Visit the wineries of Santorini

The dry, dusty soil of Santorini is rich in minerals and excellent for growing grapes. The main island grape is Assyrtiko and the dry white wines of Santorini are considered among the best in Greece. What also makes Santorini’s vines special is their age. Many of them are over 100 years old and disease-resistant. You can take a private wine tour to the most famous Santorini wineries with Santorini Tours. Santorini is also known for its fava beans and the very small and delicious tomatoes.

Ancient Thera

Ancient Thira is located on the top of the Southeast peak of Santorini’s highest mountain, Prophet Ilias, just above Kamari. There was the ancient settlement of Thira. There is also a small church from 1100, the area was also used by the Romans as an administrative center.

The road leading to the top starts from the southern end of the bay in Kamari at the foot of the mountain. Those with good energy reserves can walk to the top following the winding road. the climb takes about 45 minutes, but the easiest way is to go up by car or take a minibus that runs from Kamari.

In the parking lot, you will find a canteen, benches and a car park. From Ancient Thira, there is a stunning view over the east coast of Santorini and the coastal resorts of Kamari and Perissa. If you plan to walk or drive, it’s a good idea to get there before 11 am, before many tourists arrive.

Beaches

Although the island of Santorini does not have the classic Cycladic beaches with semolina sand and blue waters, its shores have a special “color” and options for every style. Perivolos maintains the title of the most secular beach, with beach bars, good fish restaurants, and nice black shiny pebbles. The once alternative Vlychada, with its trademark white rocks that create strange formations, is the fastest-growing beach.

On the long, touristy beach in Kamari, you will find hotels, restaurants, etc. Perissa is also a classic choice, with fine sand, beach sports, and a youthful atmosphere. A few kilometers further on, Monolithos, with its fine sand and shallow waters, remains a low-key family beach. The most northerly and windswept Kolumpos, near Oia, with fine pebbles and a large rock to offer natural shade, is the best proposal for more alternative situations. Neighboring tiny Pori, Baxedes, Vourvoulos, and Katharos are some more off-the-beaten-track options on the same side of the island. Towards Akrotiri, apart from the much-photographed Kokkini and Aspri (accessible on foot or by boat), which are mainly preferred by foreign visitors, there are also some off-road options for those looking for peace.

What not to miss in Santorini in 2024?

What-not-to-miss-in-Santorini-in-2024
Explore Santorini in 2024 with Santorini Private Tours!

The most beautiful island on the planet for many is Santorini in 2024. It is Europe’s most enchanting summer destination. Santorini’s fame is so absolute, that when you finally land in its port, you don’t know what to see first and which corners to explore to feel its intoxicating charm that makes all the tourist guides speechless. And here we come, to condense the entire experience of a trip to Thira, in ten essential steps around the Caldera.

The sunset in Oia

Even if you are not among the romantics of this world, it is impossible not to be seduced by this mysterious force that almost hypnotizes the crowd in the alleys of Oia when the clock approaches sunset time. Then, a huge demonstration with hats, cameras, and the smell of sunscreen instead of banners and hoods, moves towards the edge of Oia at the Kastelli of Agios Georgios, where you just stare open-mouthed at the sun dipping into the Caldera and the people watching it. he applauds. However, if you are looking for a similar spectacle with fewer spectators, other amazing spots on the island to see the sunset are the peak of the prophet Ilias, the hill of ancient Thira, the Lighthouse, the castle of Pyrgos, and the beach of Vlychada.

The unreal beaches

You have probably heard that Santorini is not famous for its beaches. Don’t pay attention to the rumors so you don’t arrive with your towel in a negative mood: You may not see turquoise waters and golden sands, but you will see other exotic things. In Vlychada, the sandy beach has as a background rare geological formations, which look like they were taken from a lunar landscape, on which you can climb.

At the rugged Red Beach, you’ll swim in waters that touch a salt sand beach, with purple, almost earth-like, otherworldly sand. In Kamari, Perissa, or the rest of the eastern coasts of the island, you will be able to stretch your legs against the background of the large pebbles and black sand of the island, a result of the volcanic activity. There you will also find the cheapest organized beaches, as the sunbed is not charged on this side of Thira. Delightful, alternative, and even more picturesque are the dives in Ammoudi, the small port below Oia.

Overnight in Fira

The day belongs to the beaches, the sunset time belongs to Oia, and the evening rightfully belongs to Fira, the lively capital of the island that not only has beautiful cave houses on the side of the Caldera but also a multitude of bars, restaurants, taverns, fast food and squares, which “buzz” pleasantly all night long.

The villages of Santorini in 2024

The villages of the Caldera naturally have the first say. The major walks follow the stone-built paths in Fira and Oia, with the characteristic all-white houses on the rock, the tufted bougainvillea and the unbeatable view. Oia in particular is a special experience, which is not at all bothered by the swarms of tourists – as long as you are there, in front of it, in the disarming beauty that you hardly realize is real and that it is inhabited by people. Between Fira and Oia, you will find two other “homes” of Cycladic luxury and picturesqueness, Imerovigli and Firostefani.

As for the rest of the island of Santorini, you will walk to the quiet settlement of Karterados, where it is possible to have a traditional feast with the windmill in the background, you will climb the Castle of Pyrgos and Emporio, you will admire the island churches of Vothona, the wineries of Foinikia and the view from Exo Gonia or Megalochori.

For those with reserves of energy and adrenaline, the walking route along the Caldera, which connects the villages of Fira, Imerovigli, and Oia, is recommended (you will need about three hours for the nine kilometers of a breathtaking route). Underwater, diving enthusiasts will love the sites of Trypiti and Palaia Kammeni, near the wreck of Taxiarchis, while near Akrotiri you will dive at the reef of Adiavati. Finally, Mesa Pigadia is suitable for exploring caves.

The archaeological treasures

The archaeological heart of Thira beats in Akrotiri, the ancient settlement from which frescoes, works of art and the ruins of a well-planned city with multi-level buildings, a water system, furnitures and all these have been well preserved after the Minoan earthquake that buried them have been saved. No human skeleton was found in Akrotiri, an element that advocates for the theory that there were warning earthquakes that prompted the residents to evacuate en masse. At an altitude of 396 meters stand the findings of ancient Thera in Mesa Vounos, with ruins from the Hellenistic period. Finally, in Fira, you will find the Museum of Prehistoric Thira and the Archaeological Museum, with sculptures, inscriptions, ceramics, kouros, and findings from Akrotiri and other parts of the island.

The wine

The special soil and climate of Santorini was… fertile ground for the Cycladic winegrowers, who endowed the island with a heavy tradition in winemaking. White Assyrtiko is the “ruler” of Santorini’s wine production, while Athiri and Aidani follow. The famous local wine Vinsanto is an experience for the taste buds in itself – you can try it in traditional wineries or in larger establishments. Take a private wine tour in Santorini in 2024.

9 beaches of Santorini worth swimming in summer 2024

9-beaches-of-Santorini-worth-swimming-in-summer-2024
9 beaches of Santorini worth swimming in summer 2024 with Santorini Private Tours

The volcanic beaches of Santorini are flooded with people many months of the year. They don’t look like those of the other Cycladic islands, but they certainly impress. See the 9 beaches of Santorini worth swimming in the summer of 2024.

1. Red Beach

The fiery red of the beach is balanced by the white umbrellas and the colorful figures of the people who fill the photogenic beach with fine reddish pebbles. You can rent canoes or sea bikes and there are sunbeds-umbrellas. It is accessible on foot and from the sea.

2. Vlychada

A large beach-sightseeing, with fine dark sand and majestic volcanic rocks reminiscent of giant sculptures. It is characterized by the chimney of the old Nomikos tomato factory, which functions as a tomato museum and a multi-purpose hall. The little port of Vlychada is preferred by those with a boat because it is sheltered from the wind and has a marina. There are taverns and hotels. A well-known beach bar club has been operating in the Eros location for years (there is a sign on the road leading to Vlychada).

You will park in the settlement and wander on foot to the beach to choose where to swim. Be careful because there are places where the bottom has big rocks.

3. White Beach

It is an impressive and famous volcanic beach, with towering white cliffs, dark sand, and black pebbles. It has crystal clear waters and an underground canteen.

4. Mesa Pigadia

It is a very nice beach, with fine white pebbles and wonderful pumice rocks. It looks like Vlychada, has umbrellas-loungers, a beach bar, and a restaurant. A colorful touch is the doors from the “wires” (the small buildings for the fishermen’s boats) that you will see around. You will go by a short path, but you can also come by boat. From Mesa Pigadia, passing through a cave, you can go to Aspri Beach.

5. Perivolos

Perivolos is the most secular and well-organized beach on the island of Santorini, with a settlement. Famous guests also frequent here – although now fewer and they decide to leave the hotel pools and their suite with the jacuzzi and the view of the caldera. The beach is very long, it has fine dark gray sand, pebbles, and wonderfully cool waters.

You will find everything such as luxury hotels, fish taverns, and restaurants. Beach bars of all styles, side by side, with beds, pillows, and mats on the sand, cocktails, food on your sunbed, and loud music. Happenings and parties take place, all water sports are offered, there are beach volleyball courts, etc.

In Perivolos and Perissa, there are many hotels of all categories. They are preferred by families with children, as the units in the caldera do not usually accept families with small children (for safety reasons, as there are steep steps everywhere, but also to not disturb their customers).

6. Perissa

The impressive beach is located below Mesa Vouno which separates it from Kamari and is the continuation of Perivolos. It is large, and organized, with beach bars, ethnic bars, restaurants, hotels, tourist shops, and all other tourist infrastructure – including a diving center and a water park. Trekking enthusiasts will climb the path to Mesa Vounos early in the morning, where the ancient Thera was built. Then you will go to the small church of Prophet Ilias from where you will enjoy a breathtaking view of the Aegean and the coastline!

7. Kamari

The gray-black sand burns the feet and the view of the mountain of ancient Thera captivates the eye when swimming. The beach is very long and touristic, fully organized along its entire length, and very popular with foreign tourists since the 70s. In the large settlement of Kamari, there are all the infrastructures – shops, hotels, restaurants, coffee bars, supermarkets, and much more. Many hotels have been built which are also preferred by families with small children, both near the sea and higher up. At night, the beach road becomes an endless maze. There are parking lots because access to the beach is prohibited for vehicles. See our private tours for summer 2024 and enjoy your stay in Santorini.

8. Columbus

It is an impressive bay, with fine black pebbles and impressive rocks that provide shade during the day. It is quiet, one of the few on the island that does not have umbrellas-loungers. Traditionally it was and is preferred by nudists. For information, a short distance to the east hides the underwater volcano of Columbus. It is 4 km from Oia. You will park on the main road and walk to the beach

9. Ammoudi – Armeni

The port with the fish taverns is just below Oia (boats leave for Thirasia from here). It has white houses, a pier, and a Lilliputian beach, with colorful fine pebbles, for those who want to take a dip before eating. To dive you can also go to the rocks behind the lighthouse, or rent a boat to reach the neighboring – also small – Armeni beach where there is also a diving center, or the islet of Agios Nikolaos which has very clear waters.
